The Rays have announced a contract extension for third baseman Evan Longoria worth $100 million over six seasons with a club option in 2023.

In effect, the Rays picked up their three options and added another six guaranteed years. The additional years are tacked on to the end of Longoria’s current contract — considered one of MLB’s most team friendly deals — that had his salary increasing from $6 million in 2013 to $11.5 million in 2016.

Longoria will be 37 years old if he plays out the extension through the 2022 season.

Longoria batted 289/.369/.527/.896 with 17 home runs and 55 RBI in a 2012 season in which injuries limited him to 273 at-bats in 74 games.

The Arizona Diamondbacks traded infielder Ryan Roberts to the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday, sending the fan favorite from one playoff chase to another, according to reports.

Arizona had designated Roberts for assignment earlier Tuesday in order to make space on its roster for shortstop John McDonald.

Roberts, known as “Tat Man,” became popular among fans for his many tattoos and his all-out play. The 31-year-old Roberts bounced back-and-forth between the minors and majors for many years. Last season, he started at third base for the Diamondbacks as the team won the NL West.

This year, Roberts is hitting .250 with six home runs. He gives Tampa Bay more flexibility as star third baseman Evan Longoria tries to return from a partially torn left hamstring.

Longoria hasn’t played since April 30. The addition of Roberts is insurance if Longoria struggles with the injury throughout the rest of the season. It also could help Longoria come back quicker by allowing him to serve as designated hitter.

Tampa Bay Rays third baseman Evan Longoria has re-aggravated the left-hamstring injury that sent him to the disabled list, the Tampa Bay Times‘ Marc Topkin reported Monday night. Topkin reported that Longoria’s rehab and road back to joining the Rays has been suspended “indefinitely.”

Earlier Monday, the Tampa Tribune’s Roger Mooney tweeted that Longoria had taken himself out of a rehab game Monday night with Triple-A Durham because of “discomfort” in his left hamstring.

Topkin reported that Longoria will head to Washington, D.C., to join the Rays on Tuesday. He will rehabilitate with the team there, but there is no timetable for his return.

Longoria has been out of the Rays lineup since May 3rd with a partially torn left hamstring. The Rays were hoping he would be able to rejoin the major-league team on the field later this week. Monday’s game was his second rehab appearance. He said he felt good after suiting up as Durham’s designated hitter on Saturday.

Longoria is batting .329 with a .433 on-base percentage in 23 games this season. He has four homers and 19 RBI. The Rays could sorely use his bat in the lineup as they chase the red-hot New York Yankees in the AL East. The Rays have the third-worst OPS in the American League.

Evan Longoria is having an MRI today in Tampa Bay to investigate some soreness he has been having in his left knee, according to Hardballtalk.

The 26-year-old star third baseman was forced to leave the Ray’s game Monday after a slide into second base on a failed stolen base attempt. He was able to walk to the dugout under his own power but did not return to the field after Tampa finished hitting.

Longoria is hitting .329/.433/.561 this season with four home runs and 19 RBI in 23 games played. He is currently leading the first-place Rays in batting and RBIs.

Last year in 133 games he hit .244/.355/.495 with 31 home runs and 99 RBI.
