Dallas Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray will likely not play in Sunday’s NFC East showdown against the New York Giants because of a foot injury, reports the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

“Hopefully he’s just progressing,” Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett said. “He’s moving around better. He’s in the meetings and we’ll just see where he is. I don’t anticipate him practicing today. We’ll just see where he is moving forward.”

But in answering a question about Murray walking on crutches to avoid putting weight on the foot, Garrett all but confirmed his absence for Sunday’s game against the Giants. “Oh, I think we’re just being very careful about any weight that we’re putting on him,” Garrett said. “The more time we give him the better.”

Murray suffered a sprained foot in the Cowboys’ loss to the Baltimore Ravens two weeks ago. Backup Felix Jones did not practice on Wednesday because of a bone bruise.

The Dallas Cowboys fear running back DeMarco Murray suffered ligament damage in his left foot in Sunday’s 31-29 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, but the team believes it is not a season-ending Lisfranc injury, reports ESPN.com.

DallasCowboys.com confirms that a MRI showed no broken bones, but there is some ligament damage in the foot. Murray’s status for Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers is unknown.

Murray rushed 14 times for 93 yards before leaving the game in the third quarter with was diagnosed as a sprained left foot.  Backups Felix Jones and Phillip Tanner split the carries after Murray was injured and the Cowboys finished with 227 yards rushing.

Murray was not wearing a walking boot after he was injured and says he could have continued to play, but the coaches did not want to risk any long-term damage to the foot.
