Report: Stars to fire GM Joe Nieuwendyk

The Dallas Stars are set to fire general manager Joe Nieuwendyk and hire Detroit Red Wings assistant general manager Jim Nill on Monday, reports TSN.

Dallas has missed the playoffs each of the last five seasons and finished this season with 22-24-5 record. Detroit beat Dallas 3-0 in the season finale, clinching a playoff berth for the Red Wings for the 22nd straight season.

Nieuwendyk was hired as the team’s GM in 2009. The Stars have not made a decision about coach Glen Gulutzan, as his contract expires after this season.

Nill has been with with the Red Wings front office for 19 years and spent 15 of those years as the team’s assistant GM. He was offered the Montreal Canadians general manager job last year, but turned it down.

  • Report: Canadiens trade Erik Cole to Stars for Michael Ryder

    The Montreal Canadiens have traded right wing Erik Cole to the Dallas Stars for right wing Michael Ryder, according to TSN’s Bob McKenzie.

    Ryder’s value was high after scoring 35 goals and 62 points in his first season (2011-12) with the Stars. The 32-year-old has scored six goals and 14 points so far this season.

    The Canadiens reportedly were looking to deal Cole and his $4.5 million cap hit through next year.

  • Jamie Benn ends holdout, signs 5-year Stars extension

    The Dallas Stars will have their best player, Jamie Benn, as part of their rebuilding plan after the star center ended his holdout and signed a five-year contract extension averaging $5.25 million per season.

    Immigration issues will prevent him from playing Saturday against St. Louis, but the Stars expect Benn in the lineup Monday at Columbus.

    Benn, 23, set personal bests in goals (26), assists (37) and points (63) last season. He led the club in game-winning goals (7), multi-goal games (5) and was second in shots (203). Benn was also selected for his first NHL All-Star Game, and won the accuracy shooting title during the Superskills Competition.

    The signing of Benn through 2016-17 at $5.25 million, adds to a Stars talent base that includes Kari Lehtonen through 2017-18 at $5.9 million, Alex Goligoski through 2015-16 at $4.6 million, Loui Eriksson through 2015-16 at $4.25 million and Trevor Daley through 2016-17 at $3.3 million.

    “It’s really big. We know how important he is to our hockey club. It’s good for our hockey club,” Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk said. “It’s great for Jamie. He needs to be back in that locker room with his teammates and tomorrow he will be.”

  • Jaromir Jagr spurns Flyers, signs with Stars for one-year, $4.55 million deal

    Dallas Stars general manager Joe Nieuwendyk continued the massive overhaul of his team by convincing Jaromir Jagr to leave the Philadelphia Flyers and take his talents to Big D on a one-year, $4.55 million deal.

    Jagr had been expected to re-up with the Flyers, but the Stars gave him a significant raise on the $3.3 million he made last season. Although he turned 40 in February, Jagr still managed 19 goals and 54 points in 73 games with Philadelphia last season, his first in the NHL since 2007-08.

    Dallas has also added winger Ray Whitney, center Derek Roy, defenseman Aaron Rome and center Cody Eakins this offseason.

  • Flyers acquire Nicklas Grossman from Stars

    The Philadelphia Flyers acquired defenseman Nicklas Grossman from the Dallas Stars in exhange for future draft picks, according to the teams.

    Grossman has played in 52 games this season for the Stars, notching five assists. The defenseman has 41 points in his five plus years of NHL service.

    The Stars, in return, will receive a second-round pick in 2012 and a third-round pick in 2013.

  • Stars’ Jamie Benn Will Play In Sunday’s NHL All-Star Game

    While Alexander Ovechkin made headlines this week by opting out of this weekend’s All-Star Game in Ottawa, another big name is opting in: Jamie Benn has recovered from his emergency appendectomy and should be good to go Sunday, according to the Canadian Press.

    The Dallas Stars activated the 22-year-old winger today. Benn had been missing since Jan. 14 and was expected to miss about two weeks, but he’s now ready to make his return a bit ahead of schedule.

    Benn has 13 goals and 29 assists for Dallas so far this season. He missed five games after the appendectomy, with the Stars going 1-4.

    The All-Star Game gets underway at 4 p.m. Sunday.

  • Dallas Stars Sign Alex Goligoski To Four-Year, $18.4 Million Extension

    The Dallas Stars announced today that the team has agreed to terms with Alex Goligoski on a four-year, $18.4 million contract extension.

    The 26-year-old is in his second season with the Stars and his fifth in the league. Through 36 games this year the defenseman has tallied five goals and 10 assists for the Stars. Last season in 83 games between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Dallas, Goligoski tallied 14 goals, 32 assists, and had a +20 plus/minus rating.

    Goligoski was originally drafted in the second round by the Penguins in the 2004 NFL draft, and made his debut in the 2007-08 8season.

    The Stars currently stand at 24-21-2 and are in 11th place in the Western Conference.

  • Adam Burish Out 4-6 Weeks With Broken Hand

    Adam Burish is expected to miss four-to-six weeks for the Dallas Stars with a broken hand, according to ESPN Dallas/Fort Worth.

    Burish, a six-year-veteran, was injured Tuesday night in a 6-0 loss to the Florida Panthers.

    “He got hit with a puck,” Stars head coach Glen Gulutzan said, according to ESPN. “Brenden (Morrow) shot the puck and it hit him in the hand.”

    Through 15 games this season Burish has three goals and five assists for eight points. Last year in 63 games he scored eight goals and tallied six assists for 14 points. The 28-year-old was originally drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks in 2002.
