The Washington Redskins are expected to sign tight end Chris Cooley on Monday, pending the results of a physical, according to multiple reports on Twitter Sunday night.

The signing of Cooley, a former Redskin who was released in August, was a necessary and logical step for the team after it lost tight end Fred Davis for the season Sunday to a torn Achilles tendon.

Cooley had been working out for other teams, but wasn’t in a hurry to get back to playing if it wasn’t a good situation.

The 28-year-old Cooley is the Redskins’ franchise leader in receptions by a tight end. As recently as two seasons ago, he caught 77 passes for 849 yards and three touchdowns. He had 428 catches for 4703 yards and 33 touchdowns during his first eight years with the team.

The Washington Redskins released veteran tight end Chris Cooley on Tuesday, reports the Washington Post.

“It’s been awesome,” Cooley said. “I’ll take some time and make sure what I do in the future is exactly what I want to do.”

Cooley wants to be a starter, Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said, and the coach told him that Fred Davis is the Redskins’ starter. The team is giving Cooley an opportunity to seek a starting job elsewhere, Shanahan said.

Cooley, 30, was a third-r0und pick in the 2004 NFL Draft by the Redskins out of Utah State.

Cooley only played five games last season and was placed on injured reserve after his injuring his knee.

During his eight-year career, Cooley caught 428 catches for 4,403 yards and 33 TD’s.
