The Orioles have announced contract extensions through the 2018 season for manager Buck Showalter and general manager/executive vice president of baseball operations Dan Duquette.

Showalter reportedly met with Orioles owner Peter Angelos on Jan. 4 to finalize a new contract that will keep him with the club through the 2016 season.

Showalter managed the Orioles to a 93-69 record — the club’s first winning season since 1997 — and a postseason berth in 2012.

He finished second to the A’s Bob Melvin for AL Manager of the Year after guiding the Orioles to a 29-9 record in one-run games and victories in 16 consecutive extra-inning games.

His previous stints as a manager were with the Yankees (1992-1995), Diamondbacks (1998-2000) and Rangers (2003-2006).

Manager Buck Showalter is expected to receive a three-year contract extension from the Orioles, possibly next week, according to people familiar with the talks in a report by Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com.

Showalter reportedly met with Orioles owner Peter Angelos on Friday to finalize a new contract that will keep him with the club through the 2016 season.

Baltimore Orioles manager Buck Showalter has announced that young right-hander Jake Arrieta will be his Opening Day starting pitcher, reports Eduardo A. Encina of the Baltimore Sun.

“Jake will pitch on that day, and we will go from there,” Showalter said today. “[I’m] real proud of him.”

Arrieta went 10-8 for the Orioles last season with a 5.05 ERA. He only made 22 starts — the O’s shut him down in August, as he needed surgery to remove a bone chip from his right elbow.

Starting the season opener, this Friday against the Minnesota Twins, may be exactly what the young hurler needs to regain his confidence.

“We’re hoping he pitches well enough that he does it again next year and the year after that and the year after that,” Showalter said. “We’re looking at him pitching some time later in the season in that same role. He was one of our better pitchers last year before he had the surgery.”
