Brandon Marshall calls out Packers’ DBs, says upcoming matchup is ‘personal’

The Bears and Packers’ rivalry heated up during Week 2 this season, when Bears quarterback Jay Cutler and Packers defensive back Charles Woodson challenged each other in comments before and after Green Bay’s 23-10 win.

With their pivotal second meeting days away — Green Bay leads Chicago by one game in the NFC North standings — Bears wide receiver Brandon Marshall reignited the war of words during his press conference on Wednesday.

Marshall said Sunday’s matchup was “personal” and called it “the biggest game” of his career, according to the Chicago Sun-Times‘ Sean Jensen. In Week 2, Marshall caught just two passes for 24 yards after Cutler invited Green Bay to use press coverage against Chicago’s receivers.

Marshall again urged the Packers to play man-to-man against him, suggesting that defensive coordinator Dom Capers, not the cornerbacks, was responsible for shutting him down in their last meeting. The seven-year veteran, who has already established a new career high with 1,342 receiving yards, said that he took the Packers’ trash talk as “a slap in the face,” according to ESPNChicago.com:

“For their players to be over there talking about how awesome of a job they (do) shutting down certain players, I don’t respect that,” said Marshall, who said defensive coordinator Dom Capers is the Packers’ MVP. “With two and three guys on you, on other guys, so coach Capers did an amazing job of game planning us and game planning me. I didn’t beat double and triple coverage or whatever they were throwing at us.

“I take it as a slap in my face when guys talk about my lack of ability to do something against them when they have help all over the place.”

Chicago Bears wide receiver Brandon Marshall said that in addition to NFL players taking Adderall to gain a competitive edge, he has seen some players resort to Viagra in order to excel on the field, according to Brad Biggs of The Chicago Tribune. The story has also been acknowledged by NFL.com.

“I’m fortunate enough to be blessed with size and some smarts to give me my edge. But some guys, they’ll do whatever they can to get an edge. I’ve heard of some crazy stories. I’ve heard (of) guys using, like, Viagra, seriously. Because the blood is supposedly thin, some crazy stuff. So, you know, it’s kind of scary with some of these chemicals that are in some of these things so you have to be careful.”

Carolina Panthers wide receiver Louis Murphy was arrested in April 2011 when he was a member of the Oakland Raiders for possessing a “non-labeled prescription bottle containing 11 individual pills later identified as Viagra,” according to a report from The Gainseville Sun.

As an article on Thursday from Fox Sports points out, Viagra could soon become the next performance enhancing drug to be banned by the NFL as the league continues to seek an influx of suspensions resulting from PED’s, namely from Adderall:

One benefit of Viagra and similar drugs would be the enhanced delivery of oxygen to the muscles, which also aids in hastening the body’s recovery from workouts. The drug also counteracts impotence, a frequent side-effect of steroid usage.

  • Ndamukong Suh called out by Bears’ Brandon Marshall over ‘wrestling’ hit on Jay Cutler

Detroit Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh got called out by Chicago Bears wide receiver Brandon Marshall for his hit on Jay Cutler on Monday night, according to tweets Marshall sent to Suh following the game.

The comments came after the Bears’ win over the Lions on Monday night.  At one point in the game,  Suh sacked Cutler in a way that Marshall referred to as “wrestling.” Bears head coach Lovie Smith said he didn’t have a problem with the play, calling the match-up a “tough, hard-nosed game.” Cutler didn’t take issue with Suh’s hit either, but Marshall went so far as to say that Suh can’t be in the conversation for best defensive tackle ever if he doesn’t play the game the right way, according to ESPNChicago.

“Last night the leg whip that Ndamukong Suh placed on our quarterback Jay Cutler, that was dirty. That was dirty,” Marshall said. “He can be one of the best D-tackles that ever done it, but he cannot do that that way. If you look at it, c’mon man, this is not wrestling. You don’t do that. That’s not clean.”

Suh said in response to Marshall’s comments that he cannot control his momentum sometimes:

“Simply a football play,” Suh said. “I can’t control my momentum, especially at that high speed. I’m chasing him. He’s running away from me. My whole goal is just to get the quarterback down and make a play and get us off the field or move on to the next play.”

No penalty was called on the play and Suh, despite his seemingly notorious reputation, does not face a fine or suspension from the NFL.

Cutler underwent X-rays after the game and will be evaluated more today.

  • Brandon Marshall slams Warren Sapp after Sapp’s controversial comments

Chicago Bears wide receiver Brandon Marshall hit back at former NFL player and current NFL Network analyst Warren Sapp on Monday, three days after Sapp controversially referred to Marshall as a “retard.”

Friday on The Dan Patrick Show, Sapp leveled the loaded charge at Marshall when criticizing current players’ knowledge of the NFL’s past.

“These kids that play the game today have no relevance for the past, have no conscious of what it is,” Sapp said, according to The Chicago Tribune. “I mean, Brandon Marshall talking about Shannon Sharpe, who is he to talk? He’s the first 100-catch receiver, back-to-back, retard. What you just did in Denver for three years. You don’t know this? No, of course he doesn’t, because it’s not about Brandon Marshall … it ain’t about the past, it’s about me. It’s about personal success, pay me, and now I’ll think about being a team guy.”

Marshall responded by posting two videos on Twitter. In the first, which garnered more than 10,000 views in 14 hours, Marshall hammered Sapp on everything from his divorce to filing for bankruptcy. Via the Tribune, here’s part of what Marshall said in the first video:

“Listen, I got a very disturbing heads up on something Warren Sapp said. He called me ‘retarded.’ That’s really disappointing to hear that from an NFL legend, but I’m going to take this as a lesson. And I think we all can learn from this. Be very careful who you take advice from. You want to surround yourself with good people, Godly people. When I look at Warren Sapp, I can’t go to him and talk about finances because he filed for bankruptcy. I can’t go to him and talk about my marriage because he filed for divorce. I can’t go to him and talk about being a great father, because one day I’m going to have children, because he’s not active in his children’s life. The lesson that we all should learn here is surround yourself with good people and be careful who you take counsel from. … And guys like Warren Sapp, I feel sorry for. So hopefully, one day he’ll change his life. We’ll pray for him. Instead of using words to destroy, he may use words to uplift.”

Fourteen minutes later, Marshall posted another video, tweeting at Sapp that he was “holding you accountable.”

“All we can do is try to encourage him to be better but at the same time, we’re going to hold you accountable, Warren,” Marshall said. “Just like I’m held accountable. I’ve made my share of mistakes, and I’m going to continue to make my mistakes, but I’m never going to put myself on a platform or a podium where I think I’m invisible or untouchable. So, warren, take this as words of encouragement and not words to criticize you or destroy you. This is out of truth and love. All right, Warren.”

Later, Marshall tweeted that Sapp emailed him in response to Marshall’s videos:

  • Brandon Marshall predicts Super Bowl for Bears

Chicago Bears wide receiver Brandon Marshall delivered a bold prediction to Bears fans Friday night at Soldier Field, Comcast SportsNet Chicago’s John Mullin reported.

“This is just between us, so keep it here,” Marshall said to the 27,352 fans before uttering two words:

    “Super Bowl.”

Marshall’s remarks came during the eighth annual Comcast Family Fest at Soldier Field on Friday night, as he was completing an on-field interview.

The Bears traded for Marshall back in March from the Miami Dolphins, giving quarterback Jay Cutler a clear No. 1 target. Marshall’s acquisition soared expectations for the Bears and their offense. He has caught at least 80 passes and gained at least 1,000 yards receiving in each of the last five seasons.

Marshall’s comments put him on a collision course with the Carolina Panthers’ Ryan Kalil, who predicted his team would win the Super Bowl in a recent ad in The Charlotte Observer.

Neither team is favored by oddsmakers to advance to the Super Bowl, however. That would be the San Francisco 49ers, who in mid-July sat at 4/1 odds. The Bears have 8/1 odds, and the Panthers are relative longshots at 40/1.

  • Report: Bears’ Brandon Marshall Likely To Be Cleared In Nightclub Incident

    Enlarge fontEnlarge font

Chicago Bears receiver Brandon Marshall is alleged to have punched a woman in the face during a March incident at a New York nightclub, but police have found little evidence against him and are likely to end their investigation, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Christin Myles, 24, accused Marshall of hitting her and wanted the 28-year-old receiver held criminally responsible. Marshall and his attorney, however, denied the allegations.

“The situation in New York, it’s unfortunate,” Marshall said, according to ESPN. “You never want to see anyone get hurt, but just the allegation of me balling my fist up and hitting a woman is just a lie. When the judicial system takes its course, I’m very confident I will be cleared of any wrongdoing.

“My wife was the victim in this situation.”

Marshall has yet to play a down for the Bears, his third NFL team — the Miami Dolphins traded the controversial wideout to Chicago in March for two third-round draft pick. Marshall is coming off of five straight seasons of 1,000-plus receiving yards and will now be reunited with former Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler.

  • Chicago Bears Have Been Contacted About Brandon Marshall Incident

Chicago Bears general manager Phil Emery has been contacted by the NFL regarding an incident last week involving his newest wide receiver Brandon Marshall, according to ESPNChicago.com.

“It is a process,” Emery said, according to ESPN.com. “The league has contacted us. We’re in contact with the league. We’re working through this process with them, along with ourselves and doing our own work. We will monitor the process and follow it through to its conclusion.”

A woman accused Marshall of striking her at a nightclub on Saturday, according to ESPN.com. Chicago sent two third-round picks to Miami for Marshall on Tuesday, and the team said that they had already known of the incident prior to the deal.

“What I can acknowledge is that we had a good trade partner in the Miami Dolphins and that (Dolphins GM) Jeff Ireland and I had a good conversation about all the facts he knew of the situation before the trade,” Emery said. “I will acknowledge we were well aware of the situation.

“I’ll also acknowledge we evaluated Brandon thoroughly before that. We had done our research. This came up toward the end of this process obviously. Jeff was very professional in his efforts to make sure that we knew everything that he knew of the situation. The rest of it we’ll just have to follow through to its conclusion.”

Marshall, 27, had 81 catches for 1,214 yards and six touchdowns last season for Miami and was named to his third Pro Bowl.

  • Report: Dolphins Trade Brandon Marshall To Bears

    Decrease fontDecrease font
    Enlarge fontEnlarge font

The Miami Dolphins have agreed to trade wide receiver Brandon Marshall to the Chicago Bears for third-round picks in 2012 and 2013, reports Jay Glazer of FOX Sports.

The three-time Pro Bowler will now be reunited with Jay Cutler, his quarterback on the Denver Broncos for three seasons between 2006 and ’08.

Marshall is coming off of his best season with the Dolphins — the 27-year-old wideout caught 81 passes for 1,214 yards and six touchdowns last year. But off-field issues led the Dolphins to trade Marshall despite 1,000-yard seasons in each of the last five years.

Marshall has $6 million of his $9.3 million base salary for 2012 guaranteed. He will be under contract in Chicago in 2013 and 2014 as well, for $9.1 million a season.

  • Dolphins’ Brandon Marshall Recruits Packers Backup QB Matt Flynn

    Enlarge fontEnlarge font

After six seasons in the NFL and zero playoff appearances, Brandon Marshall is getting antsy — and now, he’s got a plan. Jeff Darlington at NFL.com reports that Marshall has reached out to Packers backup quarterback Matt Flynn about joining forces in Miami next season.

“You’ve got some guys in the draft, but there’s not too many guys out there just walking the streets,” Marshall said. “Matt is available. … We’ve talked. I reached out to him.”

Marshall and the Dolphins went 6-10 last year with Matt Moore, Chad Henne and J.P. Losman splitting the snaps. Moore came on strong at the end of the year and finished with a respectable 87.1 passer rating, but Marshall isn’t sure about the young QB’s future in Miami.

“Obviously, Matt had a great year,” Marshall said. “You don’t want to take anything away from Matt, but I think we really bring in somebody who can compete and make the team better. We need someone who is going to grab a hold of our offense, hold everyone accountable and be that leader.”

Flynn, a former LSU standout, saw very limited playing time last season as Aaron Rodgers’ backup. He did, however, have a huge afternoon in Green Bay’s season finale, passing for 480 yards and six touchdowns in a shootout win over the Lions.

  • NFL Players Want To Keep Pro Bowl In Hawaii

    Enlarge fontEnlarge font

Star players have expressed their desire for the NFL to keep the Pro Bowl in Hawaii, according to the Salt Lake Tribune.

“It takes away from the game when it’s somewhere else,” said Miami Dolphins receiver Brandon Marshall. “It’s always a privilege. It’s always an honor to be selected to a Pro Bowl. But this is what the Pro Bowl is about — paradise. So it would (stink) definitely if we no longer come out here.”

It was reported that some players would refuse to participate if the Pro Bowl is moved from Hawaii. “That’s a lot of the players’ attitude, I think. If it’s in an NFL city, you’re in those cities quite often,” Minnesota Vikings defensive end Jared Allen said.

In 2010, the game was played in Miami, ending a 30-year streak of playing in the islands.  After this Sunday’s game, NFL officials will have to negotiate a deal with Hawaiian officials in order to keep the game there.

The 2012 Pro Bowl is scheduled to air on Jan.29 on NBC at 7pm ET.
