The Denver Nuggets mourned the victims of the horrific tragedy of the Aurora, Colo., theater shooting by wearing black headbands in a summer league game against the Portland Trail Blazers on Friday. The tragedy hit home for the Nuggets, since Aurora is only about 15 miles away from Denver.

Shortly after midnight on Friday morning during a showing of the new Batman movie, “The Dark Knight Rises,” a gunman opened fire at a movie theater in Aurora. Police have a suspect, 24-year-old James Holmes, in custody. Holmes is expected to be formally charged next week with killing at least 12 people and injuring 58 others.

When he heard the news of the shooting, Nuggets forward Kenneth Faried wondered if it was “really happening.”

“We talked about it,” Faried told NBA.com’s Scott Howard-Cooper. “It was tragic. It was just terrible for anybody. Even though we don’t live in Colorado, we represent the Denver Nuggets. We’re not from there, but guys still support it.”

Assistant coach Chad Iske added that the tragedy was a “scary feeling.”

Before the game, there was a moment of silence for the victims.
