Davidson is nearing a move to the Atlantic 10 conference, CBS Sports’ Jeff Goodman reported Sunday. The move would come in the 2014-15 season, Goodman reported.

The A-10 is in the midst of a revamp after losing both Xavier and Butler to the Big East, while Dayton and Saint Louis could join the exodus soon.

Davidson has been the gold standard of the Southern Conference in recent years, making the NCAA men’s basketball tournament in five of the past eight seasons. The Wildcats lost a heartbreaker to No. 3 seed Marquette in the first round of this year’s tournament.

The school gained notoriety in the 2008-09 season, when Stephen Curry led the team on a run to the Elite Eight. Its men’s basketball program is led by head coach Bob McKillop, who has coached the team since 1989.

Meanwhile, Goodman reported that the Atlantic 10 is also targeting Siena as a potential addition to the conference.

George Mason University is set to announce Monday it will join the Atlantic-10 Conference, CBS Sports’ Jeff Goodman reported. George Mason’s move will help ease the conference’s blow of losing both Xavier and Butler to the new Big East next season.

The Patriots are current members of the Colonial Athletic Association, of which the school was a founding member in 1985.

The program’s shining moment came in 2006, when its basketball team reached the Final Four of the NCAA tournament. The Patriots also made a trip to the NCAA tournament’s third round last season, but they finished just fifth in the CAA standings this season. They are currently playing in the College Basketball Invitational.

Saint Louis coach Rick Majerus will not coach this season due to heart issues, reports CBSSports.com.

School spokesman Brian Kunderman said Majerus is hospitalized in California and undergoing evaluation and treatment for an ongoing heart condition.

Majerus, 64, will sit out the 2012-13 season and be replaced by interim coach Jim Crews.

The Billikens return just about everyone except leading scorer Brian Conklin and are expected to compete for the A-10 title. Majerus has a 517-215 career mark in his head coaching career, which has included stops at Marquette, Ball State and Utah, where he took the Utes to the national title game in 1998.

Saint Louis lost to Michigan State in the third round of the NCAA tournament last season. Majerus has been at the school since 2007 and has missed time for various ailments.

Majerus did not coach on his team’s trip to Canada a year ago when he had a stent inserted.

Butler plans to join the Atlantic 10 this fall instead of the original plan to join in 2013, reports CBSSports.com.

Last month, Butler said it was leaving the Horizon League.

Butler and VCU will replace Temple which is joining the Big East as a football member this season and a all-sports member in 2013, and Charlotte who is leaving to join Conference USA. VCU wanted to join this year because their basketball team would not be eligible for the conference tournament.

The Atlantic 10 will have 16 league members in 2012 and 14 members next year when Temple and Charlotte depart.
