Red Sox closer Joel Hanrahan leaves game with injury

Boston Red Sox closer Joel Hanrahan left Monday’s outing against the Minnesota Twins with right forearm tightness.

Hanrahan left the game one pitch after giving up a game-tying, ninth-inning home run to Twins second baseman Brian Dozier. After Hanrahan’s first pitch to the next batter, first baseman Justin Morneau, Red Sox manager John Farrell came out to the mound with the training staff and took Hanrahan out of the game.

The Red Sox said later that Hanrahan has right forearm tightness and would be re-evaluated on Tuesday.

Hanrahan’s injury came just hours after the Red Sox placed reliever Andrew Bailey on the disabled list with biceps soreness. Bailey had been the team’s closer in Hanrahan’s absence.

The 31-year-old Hanrahan was recently activated off the DL. Hanrahan, who was acquired from the Pittsburgh Pirates last offseason, has struggled immensely in 7 1/3 innings pitched this season. He has a 9.82 ERA, 2.18 WHIP and just five strikeouts to six walks.

  • Report: Joel Hanrahan will be Red Sox closer, not Andrew Bailey

    Decrease fontDecrease font

Any potential closer controversy caused by the addition of Joel Hanrahan to the Red Sox was quickly quelled, according to the Boston Globe’s Pete Abraham. Hanrahan was part of a six-player trade between the Red Sox and Pirates that was finalized on Wednesday. The deal sent Hanrahan and shortstop Brock Holt to Boston, and first baseman/outfielder Jerry Sands, reliever Mark Melancon and minor leaguers Stolmy Pimentel and Ivan De Jesus to Pittsburgh.

The Red Sox acquired reliever Andrew Bailey from Oakland at the end of the 2011 season to replace closer Jonathan Papelbon. Bailey missed most of the 2012 season with a thumb injury, and according to Abraham, Hanrahan will be the team’s closer in 2013:

Bailey, 28, appeared in 19 games for Boston last season and had six saves and a 7.04 ERA. Hanrahan, 31, had 36 saves and a 2.72  ERA with the Pirates in 2012.

  • Report: Red Sox Closer Andrew Bailey Told He Needs Thumb Surgery

Boston Red Sox closer Andrew Bailey is still seeking out a second opinion on his injured right thumb — but citing multiple major league sources, the Boston Globe’s Peter Abraham reports that Bailey has already been told he needs surgery.

Bailey was examined today by team doctors in Boston. Tomorrow he’s scheduled to visit with Dr. Robert Graham, a hand specialist at the Cleveland Clinic. If Graham also recommends surgery, the Sox’ hurler could go under the knife as soon as later that day.

Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine has been surprisingly cryptic about Bailey’s injury and his status going forward.

“When a player is injured, I always am very concerned and always try to make alternative plans,” the skipper said. “If he jumps right back in, then I’m pleasantly surprised. When guys are hurt, they’re hurt and he couldn’t pitch for a couple of days, you know?”

Bailey posted 24 saves and a 3.24 ERA for the Oakland Athletics last season; he’s a two-time American League All-Star at 27. The Red Sox acquired Bailey in a five-player trade on Dec. 28.

The Boston Red Sox have agreed to terms with Andrew Bailey on a one-year contract worth $3.9 million, avoiding arbitration with the young closer, according to the Associated Press.

Bailey, who turns 28 in May, made just $465,000 last season. He entered his negotiation with the Red Sox asking for $4.7 million; the Sox countered with an offer of $3.35 million. The two parties were able to meet in the middle today.

Bailey was traded from the Oakland Athletics on Dec. 28, along with Ryan Sweeney, for Josh Reddick and two minor leaguers. The Sox plan to make Bailey their closer in 2012, replacing Jonathan Papelbon, who signed with the Phillies this winter.

Designated hitter David Ortiz and right-handed hurler Alfredo Aceves are the only two remaining Red Sox eligible for arbitration.

The Boston Red Sox have acquired Oakland Athletics closer Andrew Bailey, according to a tweet from Buster Olney of ESPN.com. The club also acquired outfielder Ryan Sweeney from Oakland in the deal.

According to Olney, the Red Sox will send Josh Reddick to Oakland as part of the deal. The 24-year-old outfielder hit .280/.327/.457 with seven home runs and 28 RBI in 87 games for Boston last year. Other pieces include 20-year-old infielder Miles Head, and 19-year-old pitcher Raul  Alcantera.

Bailey, 27, has served as the Athletics closer over the past three seasons. In 2011 he posted a 3.24 ERA with 24 saves in 42 appearances. He boasts a career ERA of 2.07.

The Red Sox have been looking to fill a gap in their bullpen after losing longtime closer Jonathan Papelbon to the Philadelphia Phillies in free agency this winter. Earlier this offseason they also acquired Houston Astros closer Mark Melancon for infielder Jed Lowrie. Melancon recorded 20 saves in 2011 while posting a 2.78 ERA.

Last week the Athletics also traded their top starting pitcher, Gio Gonzalez, to the Washington Nationals.

  • Texas Rangers Interested In RP Andrew Bailey

The Texas Rangers are looking to add Oakland Athletics closer Andrew Bailey, according to Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com. The team signed former Minnesota Twins closer Joe Nathan last week.

Texas is trying to shore up their struggling bullpen, which failed them in their seven-game World Series loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. They also pursued Jonathan Broxton, but the former Los Angeles Dodger signed a one-year deal with the Kansas City Royals.

The Rangers were interested in Bailey last season, but they were unable to land him prior to the trade deadline.
