The Rangers placed starting pitcher Alexi Ogando on the disabled list, the team announced Thursday.

Ogando was diagnosed with right biceps tendinitis the morning after he allowed two runs on four hits with one walk and three strikeouts over six innings in a 6-2 win against Oakland. The righthander has started the 2013 season with a 4-2 record and 3.08 ERA in nine starts.

Ogando had one trip to the the DL last season with a right groin strain he sustained running the bases in an interleague game.

The Rangers have recalled right-handed reliever Cory Burns from Triple A Round Rock for the short-term. The team plans to bring Josh Lindblom up from Round Rock to make Ogando’s start in the rotation. Lindblom is 4-0 with a 2.08 ERA in eight Triple-A games, including seven starts.

The Rangers are “determined” to move set-up man Alexi Ogando back to the starting rotation and making a run at free-agent pitcher Zack Greinke, according to MLB.com’s T.R. Sullivan.

If those two moves come to fruition, the Rangers’ rotation would be: right-handers Yu Darvish, Ogando and Greinke, plus left-handers Matt Harrison and Derek Holland.

The team is approaching the possible loss of free-agent slugger Josh Hamilton by acquiring another good hitter who is less trouble on and off the field, and improving the starting rotation.

In preparation for the departure of Hamilton, the Rangers are studying the idea of reinforcing the rotation with Ogando and Greinke, then addressing the critical needs of bullpen and catcher. They will likely be dealing with a payroll of around $120 million, which is approximately what they spent in 2012.

Ogando was 13-8 with a 3.51 ERA in 169 innings and made the All-Star team as a starter in 2011. A glut of starters allowed Texas to move him back to the bullpen in 2012. Injuries to starters Neftali Feliz and Colby Lewis — who will start 2013 on the disabled list — have forced the team to rethink putting Ogando in the rotation.

The Texas Rangers are lucky to be in first place in the American League West because half of their starting pitching staff is injured, with right-hander Alexi Ogando the latest to be sidelined.

Ogando was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right groin muscle and will receive a blood platelet injection to help speed the recovery.

It is likely that Ogando won’t be back until after the All-Star break.  He joins starters Neftali Feliz and Derek Holland on the DL. Ogando pitched three innings in the Rangers’ 5-0 victory against the San Francisco Giants on Sunday before being injured.

“It was a little more significant than we expected,” Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said about the injury. “We’re looking at 4-6 weeks before he’ll be back on a Major League mound.”

The Rangers called up Michael Kirkman from Triple-A Round Rock and newly signed Roy Oswalt is still in Double-A Frisco.

Ogando is 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA in 34.2 innings pitched this season.

Texas Rangers pitcher Alexi Ogando could be headed to the disabled list because of unusual circumstances for an American League pitcher, MLB.com’s T.R. Sullivan reported Sunday.

Ogando suffered a groin injury running to first during a bunt single in Sunday’s game against the San Francisco Giants. Team doctors diagnosed Ogando with a right groin strain. ESPN Dallas reported that he will be re-evaluated on Monday. Ogando was batting because the Rangers were playing in the Giants’ National League park.

If Ogando misses significant time, it’s another blow for a Rangers pitching staff already reeling with injuries. Ogando was making his first start of the year after 27 other stellar relief appearances. Overall in 2012, he’s 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA and 35 strikeouts in 34 2/3 innings.

Ogando had pitched three perfect innings before having to leave with the injury.

He was starting Sunday’s contest for Derek Holland, who the Rangers put on the disabled list Thursday because of shoulder fatigue. Rangers starter Neftali Feliz is also on the disabled list with a sprained ligament in his throwing elbow, and could be out past the All-Star break.

Ogando bunted along the third-base line in the fourth inning with runners at first and second and one out. No Giants player made a play on the ball.

“Tomorrow I will get an MRI but right now it doesn’t feel good,” Ogando said, according to Sullivan’s report.

Texas Rangers pitcher Derek Holland was placed on the disabled list because of shoulder fatigue Thursday, placing Alexi Ogando back in the starting rotation.

Ogando will pitch on Sunday against the San Francisco Giants. Holland, who was sent back to Texas, has dealt with a stomach virus for two weeks which has decreased the strength in his shoulder. He will be examined on Friday.

“We want him at full strength,” Rangers manager Ron Washington said. “We want to make sure we find out what this is and give him a chance to fully recover.”

Holland is 5-4 with a 5.10 ERA in 11 starts this season. Ogando is 1-0 with one save in 31 2/3 innings pitched.

Ogando has been in the bullpen all season because of the signing of Yu Darvish.

“We’ll see how long he can take it,” Washington said of Ogando’s impending start.  ”If he can pound the strike zone, make them swing the bat and get quick outs, he can get us through five innings. We’ll be happy with that.”
