Pau Gasol thinks the Los Angeles Lakers are lacking in discipline this season due to a roster filled with expiring contracts (10 of their 15 players) that has put together the worst record in the Western Conference.

After the Lakers were blown out by the Indiana Pacers 118-98 on Tuesday, Gasol said he isn’t a big fan of the how the team has been playing lately.

“Probably. That’s part of it,” Gasol said to the Los Angeles Times. “But that’s why you have to be disciplined and implement discipline. That’s how you kind of make that better or make that not a factor. I don’t think there’s a lot of discipline right now.”

Lakers head coach Mike D’Antoni said Gasol’s comments were “disturbing” and a “product of being frustrated and losing” and also said whatever issues the team has should be kept in-house.

do you guys pay attention to anything at all?

first, have you seen the lakers roster?  its completely devoid of talent.  no one could do any better with this talent level.

second, the article clearly stated that 10 of the 15 players on on expiring contracts on a team with no talent.  its hard to win when one player on your team doesnt care.  i couldnt even imagine coaching a team that had 10 of its 15 players not care about winning.

third, its obvious the laker management doesnt want the team to win.  they are in tank mode.  winning is counter-productive right now.  the laker management is all about losing this year, getting a high draft pick and dropping 10 contracts in the off-season to clear cap space.

every team has to clean house and retool at some point.  howard didnt work out, kobe and nash are done and gasol is just about done.  im not even a laker fan but from a basketball standpoint its obvious that this is the perfect time to bottom out and clean house.

any one of these factors would make it near impossible to win at any level, let alone all three factors at the same time.  pay attention guys, pay attention.

I'm no Laker fan but was it not obvious after failing with the personnel he had in Phoenix that D'whatever was in way over his head? I won't even bring up that embarrassing stint with the Knicks... I think it's good for the NBA when the Lakers are at least competitive. Too bad. The trust fund baby running the team is a joke, too.

D(umb)A(ss)ntoni - worst coach ever

you couldn't win with a stacked Phoenix team, we shouldn't have expected you to do jack with this team either.  Go coach in the d league or Division III college or something where your 'system' might work. You are a garbage excuse for a head coach

what is really disturbing is your approach to coaching and your stubborness.  No way should these guys get blown out each and every night.  But because you refuse to play your best players night in and night out, you don't get wins.

D'Antoni MUST go before this team can hope to improve.  (Take Jerry Buss Jr. with you while you're at it.)

Mikey has always been Big O, Little D type coach and that just don't fly.  The Suns were good way back when he ran them, but did he/they ever WIN anything?

Keep Pau, and dump Mike.  The sooner the better.

Pau needs to request a trade. The Lakers are aimless right now.

Lousy coach + lousy players = lousy team.

i just cannot watch this current lakers team. bunch of D league players and a head coach who is probably fired by summer.  i guess Mike D'A is doing a great job of getting a lottery pick.  small ball offense and no defense is working.

What's disturbing is D'Antony coaching the Lakers

D'umbtoni is a lousy coach. The only reason he hasn't been fired is that he aids the Lakers push for a lottery pick. I'd love to see Gasol on a team like the Heat, Thunder or Spurs. He is not a superstar, but he is the kind of player who makes others better.

The problem with D'Antoni is that he has a 'system' for his players.  If the players are not ideal for his system, he fails to utilize them properly in his on-court play calling.  His system is also one-dimensional offensively versus defensively.  A player like Gasol plays both sides of the ball and this guy has no idea how to make the most use of and he can lose games even with a talented player on the court .  Howard had the same problem with this coach and a healty Gasol and Kobe, as another example.  The roster in LAL and NYK had superstars to work with.  LAL was a winner (playoff team)  in all recent years with these same players.  I am not a fan of D' Antoni's system of coaching.  It has proven to not work at the NBA level at least with any roster he has managed.

How is a player saying how he feels (and being right) disturbing? What's DISTURBING is a coach who is naive thinking everything is fine.

I was watching the Indiana game and at one point the look on Pau's face said it all, he just kind of looked at the bench with a "what the hell do you expect" kind of look on his face. The only thing I find disturbing is that D'Antoni is still the head coach of this team. He has no clue about defense, benches players who have been playing well and promotes having players like Jodie Meeks just hoist up brick after brick after brick. And we will be stuck with him next year using this years injuries as an excuse for the bad record. The season is over and if he stays as head coach there is nothing to look forward to next year either

I realize that having a bad coach this season is not necessarily a bad thing for the Lakers, but seriously...he is a bad coach.  Had great teams in PHX but never came close to getting them over the hump.  And he's done exactly nothing since.

He should be out of the league next year, IMO.

What a 2-face...Kobe is over there bad mouthing every day, every move the org makes and not a word from D'Antonio. Yet Pau says one thing and it's "disturbing". This stupid coach and the stupid guy who hired him should pack up and leave. Otherwise, the Lakers are wasting time until then.

Please, let's get this coach on the next train out of town. He only looks like a decent coach when he's running a good team. Any adversity and he looks like a return of Quinn Buckner. Jim Buss, let Jeannie run the club for a few years, and maybe we'll be back in the playoffs again. Funny, the head honcho on both storied coast teams (Knicks, Lakers) are both named James. LeBron, change your name.

D'Antonio should talk about keeping things "in house".  He has no problem airing anything out if it makes him look better.   This team will never go anywhere with this coach.

The other night, for the first time all season, I heard D'Antoni mention "defense" as a problem during a ga me.  He'd already exhausted all the other reasons.  Yes, the Lakers have been devastated by injuries, but Kupchak has worked near miracles in finding castoffs who have talent and athletic ability.  And yes, when his subs were playing well, D'Antoni left them on the court.  But they are the worst defensive team in the NBA, and defense is first and foremost EFFORT.   Kobe loves him because they both think they can just outshoot the other team.

LA has been playing clown ball under D'Antoni and it sounds like Pau is getting fed up. D'Antoni was great when Nash coached him in Phoenix.

Lakers, isn't it high time to fire this buffoon who's destroying your team and get a real coach!

Pretty funny!   Pretty common response from D’Antoni when ever anyone questions his poor coaching skills.

I was being very supportive of this clown, but not anymore.  He has done nothing to coach the Lakers properly, he doesn't have any consistency and a game plan.  Gasol on the high post??? Kaman not playing??? Small ball??? No defense??? I can continue with the list but is not worth it.  I just hope the Lakers fire him quick, and he doesn't get another coaching job in the NBA

@bornindetroit

how did he fail in phoenix?  the suns ruled the west all but they had no one to match-up with duncan in his prime.  they beat everybody else except for the spurs.  and judging from duncans 4 championship rings and a 5th trip to the finals, most teams couldnt match up with him.

and his time in ny?  he had a team that hadnt been to the playoffs in years, with a bloated salary, old ineffective players, and a three stooges front office and he still had them on the verge of the playoffs.  and they easily would have made the playoffs had melo not sold out his coach.

now d'antoni is gone from ny, the roster has more talented players, a higher payroll and one of the worst records in the league.  id say thats a testament to how well dantoni did in ny.

the difference between the situation in la and ny?  the lakers are in a one to two year reset mode while the knicks are in the land of perpetual idiocy.

@David22  .  It is a double-standard as you pointed out, and I did not look at it that way.  Not only Kobe, but Dwight Howard got away with the same type of comments.  Discipline is only necessary when the media & players are involved, not when preparing for games.

NO TEAM will never go anywhere with this coach.

Tomeboy28

@Chris10  Exactly.  D'Antoni criticized Gasol for talking to the media by making a comment about Gasol to the media.  If he believed what he was saying, he would have made no comment then pulled Pau aside about this comment.  Instead, he showed a lack of leadership on this issue.  Don't do as I do, but do as I say.

@mjw149  That's funny. As a Lakers fan that's exactly how I feel about the Knicks. At least we have an excuse -- only one starter starting. The Knicks have good players and are as bad as the Lakers bench players.

@Tito1  I have no idea why he was starting Sacre all year and had Kaman rotting away on the bench.  Ryan Kelly goes form DNP every night to the starting lineup playing 30+ minutes a night.  D(umb)'A(ss)ntoni's rotations make no logical sense whatsoever.

@Tito1 As far as certain players not playing and certain players that do play, it's obvious the Lakers aren't interested in winning games at this point.

@RickMathews @mjw149  .    I am not a LAL fan or NYK fan, but feel more optimistic about LAL turning it around faster than NYK.  Simple reason is cap flexibility in the offseason (expiring contracts), number of draft picks, number of distraction/problem players, and stars expected to return with commitment.   LAL are in better shape overall on those issues.  NYK could lose their top star, keep their distractions, add no notable players, and have no picks for next season.  LAL could even lure the NYK star as a possible situation, if not other teams, and NYK get nothing unless there is a S&T involved.  They paid high for him and it is possible they sell for nothing.
