Cowboys owner Jerry Jones: Free-agency busts hindered Super Bowl chances

Dallas Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones said he should have not offered contracts to some of the free-agents he brought in because it limited the team’s ability to win Super Bowls in the salary-cap era.

In the past 18 seasons, the Cowboys have made the playoffs seven times, but none in the past four seasons. The team had a chance to qualify for the playoffs by winning the last game of the seasons each of the past three years and lost those games.

“We should have been knocking on the door and we haven’t and I have no excuses, it starts here,” Jones said on radio station 105.3 The Fan, via CBSSports.com. “But we have not. I know that to the extent that we have a healthy (Tony) Romo, our best chance to get back to the Super Bowl is a healthy Romo.”

The Cowboys, who are the NFL’s most valuable team, finished 8-8 last season and ranked dead last in the league in total defense.

“Now for us not to having got it done during those years is a mess up,” he said. “You got to get it when you’re high like that. When you’re high up on it. You can’t miss your bus when you got your quarterback and you got good talent around him and if you miss that bus in the NFL. When I look back on it, we probably paid some people that we probably would have been better off not paying.”

Ahhh the New CRYPT KEEPER Speak's and Super Bowl Chances huh? Your the one who WON'T add a GM or give away some of your Power so it's your Fault, I mean Cut Miles Austin or Deal Him since he's making way to much & not playing. Can't forgot the DRAFT BUSTS like Morris Claiborne that was a Big One a few Year' ago, if Dallas does not Draft a DT or FS with their 1st Rd Pick then you CowBoy Fan's should expect another 8-8 Season. My Dallas Fan's HATED the Fact that he Would Not Declare his Screw Up's & Clean Sweep the Coaching Staff.

Maybe you shouldn't have picked a TE in the 2nd round last year when you needed serious help on the D-Line?

I was wondering which free agents Jerry Jones was referring to that failed to live up to the big bucks the Cowboys forked over to help the football team.

Jerry Jones is the sole reason why the Cowboys have slipped into mediocrity these past 18 years. He's made the team a humorless joke.

See, this is why I don't understand Cowboy fans. They spend big bucks to see them play in that awesome stadium and see these highly paid athletes... who are mediocre at best. As long as they continue to fork over their hard earned money to watch them get their butts handed to them every Sunday, he will continue to field a mediocre team. Yeah, this is coming from a Raider fan where they pay low bucks to see a low team in the worse stadium in the NFL. Think about it... oh, irony oh irony....

Although he was acquired via a trade (4 draft picks including their 1st round pick in '09) the Roy Williams deal has to go down as the absolute worst deal in Cowboys history. JJ is probably still paying that guy.

Everybody and their brother pleaded with  Mr. Jerry   NOT  to sign TO  years ago .. Jerry won't listen to anybody ..   What makes anyone think he's going to change now ... Owners  don't make good GM's ..Garrett  is a glorified yes  man  ..And Demarcus Ware doesn't have much left in his tank ..

someone please remind the cowgirl fans that ELI MANNING won a Superbowl with one of the worst ranked defenses and the worst running game in the league in the 2011-12 season......

you HAVE to make romo shoulder some blame along with jurrah jones and the current "yes man" coach garrett....  romo coming off back surgery and eating up tons of cap space.... good times.

I love how people hate on JJ. Does anyone tell you what to do with YOUR money?? A man buys a football team so he can live the game his way and make his own decisions about the team, fully aware that he'll have to live with the consequences. What does he care if anyone thinks him a fool? It's HIS money and HIS team. Now, you can choose to either like or dislike his team, but stop hatin' on the man for spending his money as he pleases. It just makes you look insignificant and bitter.

Jerry + Dallas = No threats to achieve the accomplishments of George Halas.

Will go down as one of the worst GM jobs in history.  Free agent signings just one of numerous issues.

What he should have said:

"My hubris and overweening pride in refusal to hire a General Manager with a clue has caused this franchise to suck for over a decade."

Well who signed these 'busts'?  Who hires the 'coaches'?   Case closed your points are invalid AL Davis Jr.

jerry jones is a certified idiot.

FACTS

1. jerry jones ruined the cowboys.

2. tony romo is a born loser.

3. the team will go nowhere until both of the above are forever removed from the team.

@armagecko I have no hate for the man personally. But you can't deny he is the main reason his team is continually bad and at best average. Of course it is his money, and if he wants to play GM with his football team that is his right. But as long as he continues to do so they will never be a good team.

@armagecko    All the NFL Scouts say  Jerry Jones is trying to emulate the late Al Davis ..It was Al Davis's  money also  (he was owner )  that drove his team to the basement year after  year after year .... He was owner, GM , and coach  for years .. Most all his coaches were glorified figureheads...Oakland became the laughing stock of the NFL  because of Al Davis  .Just look at Oakland's  draft choices the past ten years -- had Al Davis's fingerprints on all of them .. Most were busts .............

@armagecko Retard, nobody hates him for what he does with HIS money.  We hate him for what he's doing with OURS.

@armagecko  I don't hate him or how he spends money. It's the excuses he has for doing the same thing over and over again. Dictators are fine but the need to remember a coup is always one corner away. Sooner or later the fans will leave.

@armagecko   Jones is bad at what he does.  136 and 136 over the last 17 years is terrible for the Cowboys.  Jones is the only constant during that 17 years.  He needs a GM badly, but his ego is more important to him than winning.

If I were a Cowboys fan I would think that 17 years of mediocrity is unacceptable.  I would be bitter.   Since I am not a Cowboys fan, I think it's hilarious.

@HopJim  I don't know.  I think Matt Millen has that one pretty well locked up.  Jerry is a fine case of someone who doesn't know his limitations and doesn't give credit where its due.  The cowboys won big because of Jimmy Johnsons drafts and coaching.  Jerry just coughed up the cash.  He should consider going back to that role.

this along with your screen name prove to me you are another idiot who probably doesn't even watch football yet spews ignorant statements about the game from your mouth
