Former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez, who is currently in jail awaiting trial on first-degree murder and weapons charges, attacked an inmate at the Bristol County Jail in Massachusetts, reports TMZ.

The website reports that Hernandez had recognized the inmate and began attacking him after the two argued during the day.

On Wednesday, TMZ reported Hernandez’s victim was handcuffed during the attack.

Bristol County Sheriff Thomas Hodgson confirmed that report to NBC10, but did not go into details about the altercation. Hodgson did say Hernandez remains in a segregated housing unit away from the general population.

Hernandez, 24, has been in jail since June 26th for his alleged role in the murder of semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd. Hernandez pleaded not guilty to the charges.

More from TMZ:

Hernandez, who is usually segregated from the general population, was allowed to take a walk in an isolated hallway … but somehow came into contact with another inmate.

We’re told Hernandez recognized the other inmate and launched into an attack — beating the other man up pretty badly.

Officials had placed Hernandez in solitary confinement out of concern he would be a target behind bars due to his celebrity status.

Hernandez is also reportedly being investigated in connection with a 2012 double homicide.

I had doubts about this situation. Hernandez I don't know about you. By the way there should be an external investigation on the guards

Maybe that was his gang initiation to get in with a certain prison group. I mean if he's gonna be there for a while might as well get some ally's.

The article said TMZ reported that Hernandez's victim was handcuffed during the attack. If this is true, it was not much of a fight. The other guy was badly compromised & was ambushed deviously by the highly dubious character of A. Hernandez.

the best is art schlichter:  goes to prison for gambling, then, while in prison, gets arrested for calling in bets from the prison pay phone.  thats hardcore.

Aaron Hernandez goes to jail as a Tight End, he will leave as a Wad Receiver.

Two things never happened again after that. The Sisters never laid a finger on Aaron again...

Why is this news? Is the Sheriff trying to get his 15 minutes or does every fight in jail get reported to the media.  Who cares who started it, its about surviving. Talk about a slow news day.

I guess he didn't like that the other inmate likes tight ends, esp. in the shower.

@adthomas1982  There are reporters assigned to monitor every filing, including public records like this, regarding Hernandez. Every little detail will be reported because he was a sports star.

@adthomas1982  it's news because you clicked on it and left a comment. Protip: if you're not interested in something, stop giving it attention, professor.

@adthomas1982 This information has to be made into a report which then goes on to become public record.  It doesn't have anything to do either way with if the warden wants his name out there or not.

@ChadCollins9  technically.... since we've never been there, and have never been accused of murder....... that's the definition of "holier than thou"

soooooo..... ya we're gonna sit here

@Thomaas Lame. There, said it.

Are you aware of grammar and punctuation rules? If you were you would see that I did say "with the steel." Unfortunately for you, you don't understand the concept behind the usage of "(in)" which would indicate I did something called a play on words. It's like talking to a two-year old. Although you did call me a "dum dum" and didn't capitalize the first word after the one correct period you did use so that might explain it.

I went to prison because someone punched my 12 year old daughter, a grown man. Im a proud convict and I would go back if someone did it again.  No, I wont be quiet, sorry.

@John64 @ChadCollins9  Allegedly murdered. He hasn't been convicted of a crime, until then, he is innocent awaiting trial.

@ChadCollins9 Well, I never murdered anyone in my life.  Hernandez did. I'd say that makes me a better person than him.
