Vladimir Putin was in attendance for the United States’ thrilling shootout win over the Russian hockey team on Saturday.

However, the Russian president still believes the home team was superior, according to Jim Heintz of the Associated Press.

After the game, Putin said he was proud of the effort put forth by Russia, and he felt they had a stronger team than the victorious U.S.

“I think our team played very worthily. It seemed to me they were a class higher — a little bit higher.”

Putin has been talking quite a bit about hockey, mentioning that many Russians were fans of players on Team USA during a visit with American athletes last week, and wishing members of the Canadian delegation luck in the games before adding, “maybe not at all of the hockey matches,” according to the New York Times.

Doesn't matter, Vlad, if the Russians were "a higher class", they lost and that's the only thing that counts.

And what is he supposed to say? My team is awful and was embarrassed? They got to a shootout that is really a roll of the dice to pick a winner and both teams played what will probably be the most exciting hockey game of the Olympics.  And, Putin was there for the game although it is in his country but still he is showing up and I can not remember any other Olympics where the leader of the country has been so visible and available. That does not mean that I think he is Mr. Cool guy or anything but he is showing up. And, I agree with a prior poster, the rest of the world does think we are all nuts and I think that is just fine because the rest of the world is also waiting in line to become residents of the U.S.A. so I think they would like to be nuts right along with us.

Careful what you wish for.... In all probability there will be a rematch and history shows in the Olympics history favors the loser of the first game. Plus if Kane doesn't get his head out of the clouds and start playing a team game the US can kiss any medal good bye!!!

It is never good to win games on technicalities, the hockey gods are vengeful

Hey Comrade Putin, looks like your guys came up just a little bit short.

Just admit it, You built a new hockey arena, spent tons of rubles, invited the world, And got beat by the Americans!!

The weak Americans!  beat you!  you lost!

And by the way, your slogan sucks HOT. COOL, YOURS, SUCKS.

Facts speak for themselfs. Putin is the avid fan of his team and his team played better. If they played in NHL, the goal would have counted and we would lose. International rules saved us. What bothers me here is that some seems unable to stop attacking Putin based on biased propaganda spread by "lap-dog" media and for no other good reason. He worked for KGB 30 years ago, so did George Bush (for CIA) so what? Can you unproductive attacks?

A "clown" below for example attacked Putin on "lack of class".  The truth is, whether we like or not Putin has more class, in ALL respects of life, then the entire White House together. From fluency of his multiple languages speaking, his instrument playing, his dedication to sport - martial arts and others, his animal loving, to countless adventure taking - he is thee man to envy. Putin is brave, patriotic and adventurist in poorest sense of meaning and as such Putin may be seen as conservative “American in heart” more often than many liberals, no-liberalist or internationalists in our own Country.

Please, can we just stay on topic and refrain from spreading hater – our "lap-dog" media has done enough and  people around the world see that and see America as unfair bullies and blahbomats.

Nice to see that even in Russia, supporters of losing teams say the same obtuse things we say here in the U.S.

I think it is important to note that this is not like the teams of the 1980 Olympics.  Team USA is made up of professional players... team USSR is also all pro players, but also has a smaller pool of players to pick from since the break up of the USSR... then becoming a smaller Russia.  Americans trying to make too much of this game by making comparisons.

I'll be honest, I read Putin's quote as commentary on the style of play, not an assertion of outright supremacy.  There's no question that the Russians play a prettier, perhaps more offensively skilled brand of hockey.  That kind of beautiful, technical hockey has been the calling card of Soviet and Russian hockey for decades, and it's absolutely lovely to watch.  The US is still taking the gold in this tournament, though.

these comments are hilarious people. can you believe the translation ? the yanks have the best goal tending in the games and i dont think it matters who they play if it gets into the shoot out. this coming from a canadian as well ! guess we will just have to beat them before it gets to the shoot out. good luck moving forward.

It doesn't matter if it happened in the nhl it would have counted, who's to say that the US wouldn't have rallied to tie it? It's neither here nor there. Plain and simple after regulation Russia got outclassed, They had overtime and a shoot out to win and they couldn't do it. And for Putin being the most powerful man in the world you must be Russian

@TomLigety I don't understand how you can claim that an autocrat, and that is undeniable, is "The American more than many Americans today are."  You can deplore our current president but replacing him with a former KGB tyrant would not likely sit well with most informed Americans.

@Dylar  I agree with all you have stated in the past tense but your future tense declaration is still questionable of another day.

Putin has more class in ALL respects of life, then the entire White House together. From fluency of his multiple language speaking, his musical instrument playing, his practice of competitive sports, animal loving and supporting, to adventure taking that would blow your mind and the mind of any adventurist - Putin is the man to envy.

Eevery true conservative, and I do not mean "republican", but conservative in pure sense of meaning would love to have man like him in the White House instead of a liberal who just increased our debt ceiling and put Americans in deeper debt.

@MorphySmith At least he is attending the olympics to show his support of his country's athletes. Even wished other countries luck. Meanwhile, Our president hasn't shown up to the Olympics once to do the same. I'd say he's got more class than the idiot we've got.

just to clarify  I don't lose a lot of sleep over what the Euros call me.

I think the important thing to remember is that the Americans beat the Russians in Russia at ice hockey. Ah the sweet nectar.

We I watch Putin I see a man who is trying to overcome an inferiority complex that he can never admit.  Even when he loses he Tells you he was better.  Talk is cheap comrade.

@MichaelSandmire @TomLigety

The problem here is that “well-informed” Americans are not indoctrinated zombies and the sheep. Well informed Americans took trillions and moved out to live in other places. Don’t you know that friedns of the friends are now in possession of trillions siphoned out form US taxpayers through wars started on false pretexts? How many people did get killed and tortured in Iraq in my and your name?

If you are well informed, answer the following questions: Where did Carl Marx come from? (London). Where did Trotsky come from? (New York). Who financed Trocky and the Russian Revolution and the communism in genral? Wall Street! Do some research on Jacob Henry Schiff . Do also understand that MOST of Russians hated communism and for that reason they appreciate conservatives and Putinwho is real patriot. Is our president patriot in your opinion?

Communism is the highest state of monopolist economy whereas the masses are kept on minimum to survive while the elites live as kings. The Soviets had party Officials who were financed by Wall Street and the taxpayers picked up the bills. We have Fortune 500 CEO’s financed by the same Wall Street banksters, for the same reason ... but, as this is out of topic I will stop here, short. But if you want to claim to be educated, do some more research, read books like “Tragedy and Hope” and stay away from, Washington Post, CCN and Huff Post liberal garbage.

@TomLigety @MorphySmithAnd just HOW has the debt affected your life? I bet you still watch Duck Dynasty, drink your beer, and watch Fox News..So you'd love to have a man in the WH who will kill his detractors and strangle the press? From what I understand having a law degree and chairing the Harvard Law Review is no easy task, and besides our president shoots hoops, has a dog, plays golf, and kills terrorists..I suppose you'll be living in Russia any day now, since you hate it here so much right?

TomLigety
TomLigety

@Mel @MorphySmith Absolutely correct Mel. Putin mingles with people all the time and demonstrates respects to everyone. He cuddle with gay athlete and drinks beer with them in the bar, while "our" clown just increased debt ceiling to put us deeper in debt. When you watch all this propaganda you have to understand that Putin paid international banksters and sent them away. Russia doesn't have debt and is guarding national resources and this is exactly why "corporate lap-dog media" barks at him like bad. Contrary to whatever corporate media reported prior to opening, our athletes reporting superb conditions in Sochi!

@Mel @MorphySmithEverything comes back to Obama! Security in Sochi at an all time high, Putin's approval numbers are ridiculously low, corruption involving the IOC and Sochi, even Romney says Sochi is below par...So why would Obama want to attend? So you're saying that if Obama went to the games, you would support him fully and not call him an idiot? Or would you manufacture some other reason to not like him?

AdamSWalburger
AdamSWalburger

@Mel @MorphySmith  Let's see, little to no civil rights in Russia with huge atrocities leading up to the Olympics. They are harboring a fugitive from the United States and to top all that there have been multiple security threats including bomb threats. Now why would our POTUS agree to go over there?

@TomLigety @JakeLucero  This is really an issue of losing with grace.

When you say you are of a higher class, doesn't this imply that your opponent is of a lower class? inferior?  And when you call your opponent that just beat you inferior, isn't that both delusional and low class? And in case you haven't read up on your European history, many a mini dictator has been driven by a sense of inferiority.

I love the Olympic Spirit.  And a big part of that is losing with grace.

TomLigety
TomLigety

@JakeLucero If you do not go there you don't care but some Americans do go to Europe and/or live there and therefore do care.  I am sorry comrade Jake but your comments sounds delusional. The most powerful man in the world and candidate for Nobel Peace price is inferior or has complex of inferiority?  How did you figure this out? I really do not mean to be disrespectful but if I was you I would bring this thoughts to therapist's attentions this can only be sign of "projection".

TomLigety
TomLigety

@martyp All we have here is not the result of who is in the WH. If I want to ski good terrain and powder I would go to Russia and would go South America and Europe. Why not? What we have here is NOT the result of who is in the WH. Who we have in the WH since 2000 is responsible for decline in living standard and elimination of civil liberties granted by Constitution.

if you think that ivy league schooled lawyers are not scumbags, in lesser or higher degree, think again or go online and apply for ObamaCare - the corporate insurance will love you.

Fox news is as corrupt and foreign owned corporate controlled media and is in no way different from other liberal media. You've been played on both side of the spectrum.

Just for the record - Your "Rearward" graduate who shoots hoops and I assumecan walk on the snow in snow shoes, issued more decrees then Stalin - this is the concern:

EXECUTIVE ORDERS ISSUED:

Teddy Roosevelt: 3
Others Prior To FDR: NONE
FDR: 11 in 16 years
Truman: 5 in 7 years
Ike: 2 in 8 years
JFK: 4 in 3 years
LBJ: 4 in 5 years
Nixon: 1 in 6 years
Ford: 3 in 2 years
Carter: 3 in 4 years
Reagan: 5 in 8 years
Bush 1: 3 in 4 years
Clinton: 15 in 8 years

@martyp @Mel@MorphySmith"President Barack Obama is closing out 2013 with his approval rating at an all-time low, according to a new poll"... While whites in America fight for gay rights, Mexians are breeding fast and are taking over California and other states. No, this is not racial statement or a judgment, this is a FACT. So is the fact that "truth in media act" is phony-ballony.... show me one gay athlete in NFL and name his corporate sponsor... non. Zilch. Why is the media not attacking forutne 500? because is own by the same corporations.

@AdamSWalburger @Mel@MorphySmith You are an idiot "swalowburger". Stop spreading false, biased and gay-driven propaganda. Becoming "protected class" and being a proud gay is not by any means a license to spread hater and false information against others. Civil rights in Russia are just fine  for many Russians. They love their children, their marriages and wants to protect them from perverts and their pornography. I don't see nothing wrong with that.

Rich11

@AdamSWalburger @Mel@MorphySmith It seems like Russia is only one fighting for the civil rights of the Iranian and Syrian people to not be raped, murdered, bombed, incinerated, clubbed, shot, stabbed, harassed, be made homeless, by the mouth breathing proxy-jihadists funded by the United States of America and its owners [Israel and Saudi Arabia].

It seems like Russia is the only one fighting for the civil rights of the average American citizen to not be spied on by an illegal, incorporated government without a warrant or any kind of independent oversight.

Truthfully, you're right.  Why would a internationally-wanted war criminal, financial defrauder like Barack Hussein Soetoro agree to enter an upright nationalist state where the lives of the common person and the nation's cultural dignity are held in higher esteem than profit, vice, and the erratic, insatiable blood lust of the Tribe?
