Ted Wells report: Jonathan Martin faced pattern of harassment from Dolphins teammates

In an NFL-sanctioned report released Friday, investigator Ted Wells concluded that Dolphins offensive linemen Richie Incognito, John Jerry and Mike Pouncey engaged in a pattern of harassment against Jonathan Martin, another teammate and an assistant trainer.

(Read the full report here.)

Wells rejects accusations that Martin made up his claims of harassment after he left the team and also rejects Incognito’s claims that his treatment of Martin was a case of buddies joking around. The investigation found that Martin’s actions were “consistent with the behavior of a victim of abusive treatment.”

Wells’ report also states that the trio of linemen did not intend to drive Martin from the team or cause him lasting emotional injury.

“The Report concludes that three starters on the Dolphins offensive line, Richie Incognito, John Jerry and Mike Pouncey, engaged in a pattern of harassment directed at not only Jonathan Martin, but also another young Dolphins offensive lineman and an assistant trainer. The Report finds that the assistant trainer repeatedly was the object of racial slurs and other racially derogatory language; that the other offensive lineman was subjected to homophobic name-calling and improper physical touching; and that Martin was taunted on a persistent basis with sexually explicit remarks about his sister and his mother and at times ridiculed with racial insults and other offensive comments.”

“The Report rejects any suggestion that Martin manufactured claims of abuse after the fact to cover up an impetuous decision to leave the team. Contemporaneous text messages that Martin sent to his parents and others months before he left the Dolphins — which have never before been made public—corroborate his account that the persistent harassment by his teammates caused him significant emotional distress. The Report concludes that the harassment by Martin’s teammates was a contributing factor in his decision to leave the team, but also finds that Martin’s teammates did not intend to drive Martin from the team or cause him lasting emotional injury,” said Mr. Wells.

“Consistent with my prior practices involving similar investigative reports, it is not my present intention to hold a press conference or comment further about the Report. The Report is thorough and comprehensive, and speaks for itself,” said Mr. Wells.

The report is 144 pages and takes an in-depth look at the entire situation. Pro Football Talk notes that Wells discovered text messages sent between Incognito and Pouncey discussing Martin and possible retaliation against their teammate, who they called a “snitch.” PFT also reported on the investigation’s conclusion that the linemen racially abused a Japanese-American team assistant trainer, further indication that the bullying extended beyond Martin.

Incognito had repeatedly denied bullying Martin. On Wednesday, he went on a Twitter rant against Martin in which he said that the “truth” would bury his teammate.

Martin and Incognito were both starters for the Dolphins until midway through this past season, when Martin left the team and accused Incognito of bullying him during his time in Miami. Incognito was subsequently suspended, in early November, and missed the rest of the season.

Wells’s table of contents reveals the following chapters and bullet points:

1. Martin Was Subjected to Persistent Harassing Language
2. The Harassment Humiliated Martin and Contributed to His Mental
Health Issues
3. The Mistreatment of Martin Is Consistent with a Case of
Workplace Bullying
4. Incognito, Jerry and Pouncey Harassed Other Dolphins Personnel
5. Repeated Acts of Harassment Contributed to Martin’s Departure
6. Martin Did Not Fabricate His Allegations of Harassment
7. The Extent to Which the Abuse Resulted from Racial Animus Is
Unclear
8. The Culture of the Dolphins Offensive Line Does Not Excuse the
Mistreatment of Martin
9. Martin’s Friendship with Incognito Does Not Excuse the Abuse
10. Martin Never Reported the Abuse to the Dolphins Organization
11. The Fine Book Shows that Incognito Knew that the Harassment
Affected Martin
12. No Malicious Physical Attack of Martin Occurred at a 2012
Christmas Party
13. Coach Philbin and the Front Office Did Not Know About the Harassment
14. The Verbal Abuse Was Contrary to Team Policies
15. The Dolphins’ Plans To Improve the Team’s Workplace Conduct
Policies Are Commendable

Say what you want about Jonathan Martin & his supposed lack of toughness. All I know, is that society has never gotten better because we attacked people who struggle. Incognito deserves whatever is coming to him, and the world will be a better place the moment we stop glorifying his kind of behavior at the expense of the people taken advantage of

It's as simple as mutual respect. Give people their space & stop forcing people to act the way you want them to act

I like the way Martin is pegged as a coward here for not standing up to Incognito while it is Incognito who had to get two other O linemen to help him (and protect him)  Cowards, like Incognito, always have to get a gang to back them up.

I bet Pouncey is proud to be named in this report.  This afternoon him and Incognito are probably getting some steroid injections while fist bumping each other for being called out as bullies.

I think the key point is Incognito and Pouncey, planning, via text, to get Martin and  force him out as they considered him a "snitch"

So much for friendly banter

So, just to sum up:

 - Richie Incognito = Tactless idiot with substance abuse issues and behavioral problems

   - Jonathan Martin = Timid victim of bullying

   - Miami O-Line = Lemmings following Incognito over a cliff

   - Miami coaching staff = Lying their collective A$$es off

   - Miami Exec's and ownership = clueless

   - knuckle-draggers justifying bullying as "manly" = sad proof that evolution isn't perfect.

So can we drop the pretense that it was all in the name of good, manly fun and just say Incognito is a bully and a jerk. His next stop should be professional wrestling.

In the days when a community organizer is elected President. A world of regressives and Liberals who buy into global warming while the World celebrates men preferring another man's feces dripping anus over a vagina, Martin is the toast of the town just for being a big coward.

I guess that makes sense.

Yeah pretty much spun to protect the Dolphins while not totally exonerating them.

Spun to place blame on Incognito(def not blameless) and other players on the team, and away from NFL and Dolphins.

Spun to not hold Martin accountable for anything and to be the Victim, when the puss should have stood up and defused it before it got to this level.  No accountability on Martin??? WTF?

Martin is a hero to every coward, sissy and rape victim on the planet.

I guess SI didn't read the report. Looks like you are on the kill Incognito, and save Martin bandwagon...When you get some reporters that can read, then comback and post a story. In the  meantime most of the other outlets got it pretty fair.....

If Martin was any kind of man he would've stood up for himself. And no, the hole team would not have beat him to the ground.

The worst that would've happened is a few blows thrown, some black eyes, bruises and busted lips.

Even in the fake world of wrestling, roided up guys get into real fights backstage.

A few years back Dave Batista liked pushing people around backstage until Booker T took him down and humbled him. No major injuries but Batista backed off. Very similar situation. Athletes in the locker room and someone wants to throw their weight around. But in this case Booker T was a real man and responded like a real man when a muscular bulk messed with him.

In Martin's case his tail went between his legs and he acted like a coward and ran to his wife and the public to stand up for him because he was too weak and cowardly to do it himself.

That's what Martin had to do. Stand up to one guy. That's it. But they all knew he was a pu**y and smelled his fear and so he got picked on.

And he runs to his wife and leaks his sob stories and fellow pu**ies feel empathy for the coward. All of Martin's brother and sister cowards hate Incognito because he reminds them on the bullies who exposed them as Martin's type of coward.

Misery loves company.

@BillyTheMan  Did you write this comment before changing your Depends or do you get a thrill sitting in your own feces while making childish comments?  Either way you are a mentally unstable troll who needs to stop molesting little children because no adult will have anything to do with you.

@BillyTheMan  Listen Rush stop hiding behind BillyTheWoman.

Actually it is a Harvard Law Graduate and former president of the Harvard Law Review, prominent social activist, civil rights lawyer AND Senator who become President.

That's right empirical evidence that our temperature overall is rising and environmental 'anomalies' are increasing is somehow made up.

Why not castigate all the men who prefer women but prefer to back door it? What's the difference? Why not take Kobe to task because apparently according to investigator reports its his 'thing'.

So bully, harassment, name calling, belittlement, this is somehow 'Manly'?

Billy you are no man. In fact Billy you make no sense so yes if YOU make no sense then the opposite may make sense.

@BillyTheMan  It was progressive, anti-federalist, early-Democrats like Tom Jefferson & Jim Madison who had blokes just like you in mind, Bill (?), when they fashioned, with some trepidation, the right to free speech (BoR).  Gulp.  'It takes all kinds to make a world, TJ.  You got it, Jimbo.'

As for your "global warming" fear, I think you can still book some cruises to catch a last glimpse of a small piece of the ice cap that remains.  At last report I believe two polar bears were hunkering down on it, not looking all too happy with their predicament or the human race.

Keep digging, Bill, we'll fill it in when you're finished, whether you climb out or not.  And if this was a test, SI's community gets a passing grade (B+?).  Too easy.

@rh2000  Moral of the story: There are more cowards in the World than people with guts. And those cowards will flock to one of their kind (Martin) from the safety of the net.

It's a safe way for cowards to stick together.

Wow, you equate cowardice with being the victim of rape?

@beast  you apparently have not lived in a civilized world.  While some of us would have fought back, why would it be required.  That is called hazing and 300 pound guys punching each other is serious business.  You have no clue.

@yingyangpalms   And even then Incognito evidently needed to get two other Lineman to help him.  Who is the coward?

@yingyangpalms @rh2000 Actually a person who picks on someone, demeans and belittles them knowing there will be no repercussions – that's my ideas of a bully. That's Incognito.

@ArizonaYankee  No, he's done.  Thrown out of two colleges for bullying, suspended from two NFL teams for bullying.  Named as the main culprit in this case.  continues his antics as recently as Tuesday.

He is finished.  The next time we hear abut him is when he is shot or sentenced to jail.

@decredico @beast  STFU yourself and go find Martin and give him a big hug. Both of you can check under your beds for Incognito. Who knows, maybe you both can sleep together to feel safer as well.
