Michael Sam’s father says he was ‘terribly misquoted’ regarding homophobic comments

Michael Sam’s father told The Galveston Daily News he was “terribly misquoted” by The New York Times in an article that details his struggle with the news that his son is gay.

In The Times story, Sam Sr. said he was uncomfortable with a gay NFL player, that he was a “man-and-a-women type of guy” and that he didn’t want his grandkids “raised in that kind of environment.”

“I did not say anything about my grandkids,” Sam Sr. said to the Galveston paper, adding that he doesn’t want people to think he has an issue with his son being gay.

THAMEL/EVANS: How will Michael Sam coming out affect his draft status?

He acknowledged that while The Times accurately reported most things, he thought some of his words were taken out of context, such as a quote saying Deacon Jones was “turning over in his grave,” upon hearing about a gay NFL player.

“I told them Deacon Jones is going to roll over in his grave because here comes my son and that he’s going to be a star in the NFL,” Sam Sr. told The Galveston Daily News.

The Times defended its reporting and said Sam Sr. was quoted “accurately and fairly” in an email to the Galveston newspaper.

The Russians, Gambians and others are right to protect their children from gays.  It does not take a genius to figure out that to perpetuate their lifestyle  gays must corrupt others. The argument that all were born that way is contrary to every statistical analysis ever conducted. Homosexual instinct is a freak of nature and rarely occurs. Most homosexuals are sexual deviates not "born that way".  They propagate their ranks by molesting the young and vulnerable.  Deviates are a much larger segment than those who may have actually been born that way as a twist of nature. According to studies, 4 out of 5 are sexual deviates who molest to sustain their perversion.  Compare the statistics of  naturally occurring homosexual behavior versus the percentage of active homosexuals. There is a very wide margin and most are NOT born that way.  Russia is right to protect their children and shame on the United States for failing to protect ours. Over 95 percent of molestations go unreported. The sexual deviates (PERVERTS) infest this country like Vermin as recently pointed out by another African Country who is ravaged by the moral decay and disease it brings. It is a national disgrace!  Gay men are the number one molesters of young boys and who knows what the numbers are for little girls by gay women.   Most cases are unreported.  It is a National Disgrace and any Christian who can abide and allow this abomination to prosper needs to go back to the bible. It is time to stop turning your head and pretending it is not happening. It is obvious that we cannot stand idle any longer. It is time to say NO MORE!  And  if you don't like the TRUTH?       TOO BAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Steelers coach is still in the closet. Mike Tomlin sucked me off a week ago.

We are who we are.  Let's leave it at that.  I'm attracted to women because that is the way I was born. If a man is attracted to other men, I just can't believe it's because they decided to like guys just to be different.  If you have a problem with homosexuals, then just count yourself lucky that you are straight.  But that doesn't give you the right to spew hatred against those that are different.  All that said, I bet the Steelers draft Michael Sam.

folks need to leave the dad alone....

people who were not family members blew their minds on both sides of the issue when they this came to everyone's attention.

is it that unforgivable if sam's father needed time to process this since by all accounts he learned of this when everybody else did.....

I have no idea what the relationship is between sam and his father but even in the originally reported statement (which seemed in part to be misquoted to me) it did not seem like sam's father was "cutting him off" in any way so folks need to get a grip.

I would hope that sam and his father's relationship would not be worsened by the revelation but that is for them to figure out...... preferrably without us.

First he says it, then denies it. Hey Sam don't give him nothing, he's not supporting you.

Even if he was Homophobic I think the Deacon Jones thing was probably a misquote because the original statement didn't make much sense.

Sam Sr., don't bother or worry about the PC crowd forever trying to twist and distort your sincere sentiments. They are the most intolerant and ignorant crowd on the planet. What your feeling is understandable. You are a good man. Don't fall for their bs.

Sam and his pop should get their own TV show on the Oprah Network (OWN), She could use a hit.

He's not going to be drafted. Should have waited until you had a contract.

Not buying the Deacon Jones backpedal, but I think it's just a dad trying to come to terms with a shock while under a microscope. As a dad, I'd not have given an interview until a few weeks had passed and I'd had time to wrap my head around everything.

I think this guy needs a better idea of 'misquoted' versus 'misspoken'.

Gee,  I can't imagine a new agency ever, ever, misrepresenting the truth. Or quoting out of context. Can you??

Sounds like he said some things he wishes he could take back after having some time to think about it.  It happens to all of us.  Just most of us don't have it reported through the National news.

Or who would think the press would extract segments and quote out of context?

He's just trying to backtrack because he realized how stupid his comments were. Deacon Jones "rolling over in his grave" because he's scared of how good his son will be? Please.

On the other hand, who sends his dad a text message to announce big news like "I'm gay"? Really?!? My 16 y.o. son, who texts all the time and only calls as a second option, said that was totally wrong. If that's how you communicate with your dad, then you don't have much of a relationship with him anyway.

Besides, I think Sam Sr. should keep his mouth shut about anyone else's quality of family life, considering three of his sons are dead and two others in prison. I think a box of rocks could raise a kid better than Sam Sr.

Sounds like a dad now thinking about the money his son might end up making.  I hope the Times recorded the conversation.

@godbowsdowntome  ...

the deacon jones thing and the grandchildren thing does make me think a little mis-quoting went on in this....  or maybe the papers intentionally "spiced things up".... it would not be the first time.

neither you nor I know anything about the relationship this father and son have....  maybe just like sam's private life you should leave it up to them.

you sound like you know the guy personally.   doesn't seem like he hates his son to me. but maybe you know them and can enlighten us further.    well?

@The_truth_hurts  He'll be drafted if teams think he can sack the QB and help their team. Plenty of coaches could handle the situation very easily:  Belichick, Reid, Coughlin, both Harbaugh, Fischer, Carroll, Fox, Kelly, Peyton, etc.

All a coach needs to do is tell his players not to address it. Then the coach tells the media it's not a problem for anyone on their team, and he's not going to address anything about him unless it's related to football performance. End of story.

@Listening  Or maybe the father realized the damage his words could do to his relationship with his son. If the Galveston Daily News has proof of what Sam, Sr. said, I hope they don't release it, for the sake of both Sams.

Yeah...  I'm not sure any good could come releasing that interview.  Some damage has already been done.

@kdbarbershop  Maybe, I thought it was crazy when I heard he would only be a 3rd-4th round pick despite the fact he was DPOY in the SEC. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't see anyone drafting him. Too big of a circus.

kdbarbershop
kdbarbershop

Collins was at the end of his career. He's not playing because he's not good enough. I think Sam will be drafted. Its hard to imagine the SEC's def. player of the year not being good enough for the NFL.

Whatever
Whatever

@The_truth_hurts @nfinitwordsfoto  Jason Collins came out when his NBA career was basically over. At the time his contract had expired, and even then he was just a practice player who almost never played in games. He was in his mid-30s and was only going to decline, never improve. He wasn't signed because he couldn't help anyone.

The_truth_hurts
The_truth_hurts

@nfinitwordsfoto @The_truth_hurts  I'm not disagreeing with you. It shouldn't affect his draft stock just because he's gay....but it will. Stop trying to make it sound like I don't want him to be drafted. I constantly speak the truth, if I had a nickel for every time I was wrong, I'd be broke.

nfinitwordsfoto
nfinitwordsfoto

@The_truth_hurts @nfinitwordsfoto   Once again, his draft position does not have anything to do with it.  You're name is the truth hurts yet somehow you preach that a person should lie about who they are.  Do you even understand just how stupid that is?

Honest people tell the truth and if there are consequences, they deal with them.  That's a strong person.  Weak people lie or omit truths because they're afraid.

You sound like a weak person.  Have a nice day.

nfinitwordsfoto
nfinitwordsfoto

@The_truth_hurts @nfinitwordsfoto   Why would I apologize to you?  Your advice is based on lying about who he is to improve his social or economic position with a team.  That's low character.  High character is being honest and letting the chips fall where they may.

Whether he gets drafted or not doesn't change the fact that you advocate dishonesty and falsehood.

The truth hurts dude.  I've just never seen you post any of it.
