Shaun White finishes fourth in halfpipe

More Sports

Shaun White finished fourth in the men’s snowboarding halfpipe competition, failing to become the first American to three-peat in an event at the Winter Olympics.

Swiss snowboarder Iouri Podladtchikov won the gold medal, scoring a 94.75 on his second run to claim top prize. White failed to medal in Tuesday’s competition after winning gold at Turin 2006 and Vancouver 2010.

After falling twice on his first run, White rebounded on his second run, scoring a 90.25. But he remained behind Podladtchikov, who was followed by Japanese riders Ayumu Hirano and Taku Hiraoka.

White notched the top score in the qualifying round, posting a 95.75 in his first run to advance directly to the final.

The snowboarder pulled out of the slopestyle competition last week so that he could focus on the halfpipe. Though several other competitors criticized the move, White remained confident in his decision entering the halfpipe final.

“Showing up with three full days of practice on the course being in the condition that it is, I’m really happy with the choice I made,” he said prior to the halfpipe final.

Usually not a fan of these sports but I'm loving these Winter Olympics.

In a event that was CREATED and RULED by American snow boarders, the guy who complains the most usually ends up eating it. Which he did. I just wish U.S. athletes would take a chill pill in Sochi......oh wait, that can't happen. It's like 45 degrees there, and the snow is MELTING!

This was going to happen eventually. The guy's too focused on building his brand and image - that's the most important objective in his life, not actually doing the sport he's famous for. He has skirted by on reputation the past couple of years (benefits of a "judged" sport) but when he went corporate, he lost his abilities. Happens to a lot of niche athletes.

What a shame. I think age was starting to catch up to him. He had an awesome run, and should be considered one of the all-time greats.

Always skeptical of "sports" where judges determine the outcome.

Ha ha ha ha ha

The egomaniac screws over another by saying he wants to compete in slope style, pulls out after it's to late to let someone else take his slot, and now he doesn't even medal. Serves him right.

I wonder if he will now cry and say the half pipe wasn't as good as it should have been, considering he went directly to the finals, so the course didn't change much. And he got beat by 3 better, people who all had to perform on the same pipe.

Oh well, hopefully now, he will realize it's not good to screw over others the way he did

Good, his 15 minutes of fame are finally up and we won't have to hear about him anymore.

@x72  So you're skeptical of Football too?  They have a line judge, back judge, side judge, and field judge.

@6marK6 Yeah, I would like to see you try 1/16th of what they do and see if you'll be able to not wind up in a wheelchair or sucking your food through a tube.

@6marK6  No it's that "man's man sport" where one guy in tights bends over in front of another guy with tights and then shoves his hands in his crotch to receive a ball. Wait, what.

@r3dawn  was a long 15min wasn't it then? Good on him for being one of the most dominant riders over the last decade

@TheGodThatFailed @x72  Yes, judges bring in the fix. I truly believe it was the downfall of boxing. Why not post scores on a scoreboard after every round? No one knows who's really winning until the end.  Yeah right.

@MorphySmith @r3dawn  Am always amused when strangers personalize criticisms of some athlete they don't even know. Dude, White does not need you sticking up for him.
