Golden Tate prefers Seahawks for less money but needs deal to ‘take care of myself’

Fresh off a blowout win against the Denver Broncos in the Super Bowl last Sunday, Seahawks wide receiver Golden Tate said Tuesday that as he looks ahead to next season, he would much prefer to stay in Seattle for less money than “break the bank somewhere” and potentially play for another team in a “crappy city where the fans don’t give a crap about the team.”

Speaking during an interview with Sports Radio 950 KJR in Seattle, the 25-year-old admitted that he shouldn’t be commenting right now on free agency, but he gave some insight into his logic as he thinks about his playing career. Via ESPN.com:

“I probably shouldn’t even say this right now, but I’m going to say it anyway just because I love Seattle. Honestly, I would rather take a little less to be happy and win ballgames than to take way more and go to a crappy city where the fans don’t give a crap about the team, you win a game once a month — something like that.

“I would much rather stay in the situation that I have now for a little less than to go and try to break the bank somewhere else.”

He did back off those comments a bit, however, admitting in the interview that he doesn’t want to be “disrespected” and is looking to secure a deal that will allow him to “take care of myself and my family for the rest of my life at the same time.”

The Super Bowl champion, taken in the second round by the Seahawks in the 2010 draft, signed a four-year deal, $3.26 million deal as a rookie. He caught 64 passes for 898 yards this past season — team highs — and also finished with five touchdowns on the year. He also averaged 11.5 yards per return as Seattle’s punt returner.

Nobody will pay Golden Taint more than the Seahawks will.  He's an average receiver with a big mouth.  I think the Seahawks are perfect for him...

Just remember Tate, there is no income tax in Washington state.  You may end up breaking even over a higher paying gig in a high tax state.

Tate is a big piece of 13 regular season wins,,,no doubt about it. With Rice most likely gone and a little cap space I expect a lot of it will go to Thomas who is the first priority for Seattle, then I think Tate is second on the list. I hope he gets what he needs to stay because he is a talented big part of this team.

FACTS

5'10 WR who has averaged 2.8 catches per game in his career and 37.8 yards per game over his career.

Hometown discount? Again...hilarious.

Cynicism is a bitter meal/brew. It's for losers who rarely accomplish anything worthwhile. Seattle has an unusual coach and organization. Going to a lesser organization for a few more bucks is crazy. Football is a very hard game, and ultimately if you don't truly love to play it with the team you're on, you're cheating yourself. Tate can make more than enough money by staying with the Seahawks to take care of himself and his family for the rest of his like - assuming he doesn't make the mistakes that so many players make that result in them going bankrupt within a few years after their careers are over.

The only ones that win by chasing the bigger bucks are the agents and leaches who feed on the efforts (and broken bodies) of the players they pretend to serve.

The cynical comments are from people who have accomplished little in their lives.

Tate has come up HUGE for the Hawks during this special season.

Every time Tate touches the ball, something good happens.

Did you see the punishment he received in the Rams game ?

He is amazingly durable, unlike our highest paid receivers.

If Golden is not back next year, true Hawk fans will be hugely disappointed;

Sign him quick, and give him Rice money

Hometown discount? hahahaha....First off he has don NOTHING to warrant a hometown discount. His numbers are average at BEST. These types of receivers are a dime a dozen in the NFL. He won't go anywhere because no one will want him. It's hilarious that he thinks he might "cash in" somewhere. WOW!

This is not a knock on the Hawks. Great season. Great team effort. Kudos to them but I might not even know who Golden Tate was if not for that ridiculous call against the Packers in 2012.

I love Tate...  he provides yards after the catch, he's clutch and he wants to win for the organization.  Hope to see him back!

@MarkUlloa Give him Rice money? Are you smoking weed? I don't mind re signing Tate, he's a decent player, but the Seahawks need a big WR more than they need Tate.

@evangelio  If you think he won't bolt to make more money you're kidding yourself.  He'll want to win "anywhere" for the right price just like the rest of them.

@Erickson7RE  If you were from Seattle you would know how clutch Tate was to the Hawks this year. He'll be back. Bank on it!

@riley8 @sporra01 @Erickson7RE  Dude we are not your "average" franchise...why would he want to go elsewhere, when he can win here? Like he actually said...he would rather sign here than play for a crappy team(detroit). #GoHawks.
