Brendon Ayanbadejo: Players smoked pot before Super Bowl

Former NFL linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo, who went to the Super Bowl with the Chicago Bears in 2007 and won it last season with the Baltimore Ravens, said in a Fox Sports interview this week that he believes players smoked pot before the big game, though he wouldn’t say whether the Bears or Ravens were the culprits.

The three-time Pro Bowler told the story of when he arrived at the team hotel early during Super Bowl week:

“I’m not going to say which Super Bowl it was but I just remember getting off the elevator one night — it was early on in the week, just to start the week off — and all of the sudden I just got hit over the head with fumes of marijuana on the entire floor of the hotel that the team was staying on . . . I could just imagine there were a few young guys just toking it up in more than one room.

“I was like, ‘Man this is the week of the Super Bowl and you’re just going in?’ So then I was looking around, and I’m like ‘OK, where is the security?’ I looked and for some reason we didn’t have regular police — coach was smart enough to have rent-a-cops on our floor instead of regular police like we usually do.

“I scratched my head but I was like, ‘OK, uh, that’s a good thing ’cause . . .’ that’s it. That’s all I’ve got to say about that.”

The topic of marijuana in the NFL surfaced again this year leading up to the Super Bowl. Commissioner Roger Goodell said during a panel last week for the league’s “Head Health Challenge” that he would consider allowing players to use marijuana for medicinal purposes if it helps them deal with concussions. The sentiment was shared by Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll, according to an ESPN report:

“I would say that we have to explore and find ways to make our game a better game and take care of our players in whatever way possible. Regardless of what other stigmas might be involved, we have to do this because the world of medicine is doing this.”

Is Ayanbadejo a pot smoker or a bone smoker?

Why? You got to play in 2 Super Bowls. What does he have to gain by outing teammates? The same teammates that played a bigger role than him in getting to the Super Bowl.

Notice it's always the lesser knowns that pull this crap. Trying to get their 5 seconds. He was a good ST player, but man just shut up and be thankful. It's the NFL not TMZ.

Benchwarmer flaps off at the mouth for attention.. He told us just enough to get some attention and left out all the details of which team.. He was better off keeping his big mouth shut..

"World Champs"?

Ummm....sure. There's not even enough nations that play organized American Hand-Egg to qualify as an Olympic Event. There's no "world" in the NFL & Super Bowl.

Who gives a flying flip, I wouldn't care if they shot heroine in there brain on the field. These are football players they are there to play a game, if these players are your role models then you seriously need to do some serious sole searching.

Hollywood Henderson approves.

Seeing as how the Patriots scored every time they had the ball against Chicago in their Super Bowl, I suspect the pot smoking was done by the Bears. The Bears vaulted D couldn't stop a Pee Wee team during that game.

It calms their nerves and lets them play better.

Why should this be shocking news? If I were a betting man I would say a good portion of players toke up before a game. I'm not saying it's right, but why should it be surprising? Non-story, if you ask me.

No.  No.  That simply can't be.  We all know that the NFL has a rigorous, airtight drug testing protocol.

So, you have nothing of value except you think they smoked pot. And in other news players had women in their rooms too but we won't way who or what team.  Thank you Mr. irrelevant for just trying to get some press.

I used to race motocross. I was afraid to smoke before a race but I had my own practice track and consistently ran much faster times when stoned. Other guys said the same thing (they raced high). For some reason, I could concentrate of the task because it came so quickly (I played tennis better high also). But, golf? Couldn't pay stoned. I think there's too much time to get distracted. My conclusion: If I had to slam into guys who wanted to hurt me I'd rather be high.

I'd have a hard time believing Devin Hester ever goes on the field without smoking pot first.

Does anyone actually believe  there aren't players on the field loaded? We aren't talking high school kids giggling through study hall here.Or setting around getting  massively  Cheech and Chonged.......

Getting a head on and getting extremely focused is more like it. There isn't a sport going, and hasn't been for a long time, where someone is not out there having gotten toasted prior to...

LeBron.  He cares too much about his image, and considering 90% of his fans are teenagers, their parents might stop buying his ugly shoes for their kids...

Nah.  If someone passed him the blunt he'd just fumble it like he fumbled the snap in the SB...

It had to be Cedric Effing Benson!

I agree.  He was super blazed on that opening kickoff!  Weed doesn't affect everybody negatively...only idiots like Cedric Benson can cost you a championship with an untimely fumble...

Plus the pot smoke in your body gives you extra padding.

@Frank14 Actually,post concussion symptoms are well treated by THC.  Nausea and anxiety are two of the major symptoms and marijuana's effectiveness against both is well documented.

@Jamm90 @Frank14 Whether it does or doesn't, it's absolutely proven that it is addictive and that those who smoke much of it are less productive in their lives. Have employed someone who smoked too much weed, the kid had zero accountability, no initiative, and was lucky if he ever showed up at all, much less on time. Found out later he had a marijuana problem, in retrospect it was no surprise whatsoever.

@thatmanstu @Frank14 It's effectiveness at increasing people's inability to hold a job also is well treated by THC. But that's the America millennials want, bunch of unproductive stoners whining about how the government doesn't give them enough stuff. Good for you all, unfortunate for some of our children.

@Iowa @Jamm90@Frank14Fortunately, the reign of ignorance perpetuated by people like you is finally coming to an end. Take accountability for your own poor judgment in a bad hire. It's not addictive at all, although like anything, some people take it to excess. "Absolutely proven" -- I challenge you to cite any legitimate study. It's already legal in two states, and will be in all 50 within the next two decades.
