The Dallas Cowboys have hired former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator and former St. Louis Rams head coach Scott Linehan to call their offensive plays, NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reported Monday.

According to the report, Linehan was brought in for an interview and hired Monday. The Cowboys were so certain that they were going to hire Linehan, according to Rapoport, that he was a part of team meetings on Monday.

Citing a source close to Cowboys offensive coordinator Bill Callahan, Rapoport reported that he would be “annoyed” if Linehan were hired. His hire means the Cowboys will have had three offensive play-callers in as many seasons.

Linehan has extensive ties with Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett. As the Miami Dolphins coordinator in 2005, Linehan hired Garrett to be the team’s quarterbacks coach. Linehan also unsuccessfully attempted to hire Garrett as the Rams’ offensive coordinator when he became the team’s head coach.

It has been said many times, the only problem with the Cowboys is their GM/owner/wannabecoach.  Jerry's "genius" began with hiring Jimmy Johnson and ended with firing Jimmy Johnson.  The team created by Johnson and his staff were lightning in a bottle, Jerry thought HE was the lightening and proceeded to prove to the world he was in charge of everything Cowboy.  Well, he has exactly what he wanted, a Jerry controlled team. Unfortunately the Cowboys are always one excuse away from greatness.  That excuse is named Jerry Jones. Hire a real GM Jerry, surrender your control to that GM and stop the excuses.

OK, now I get it.  Nothing wrong there in Dallas, but the play calling.

Lineham should held shore up that porous defense defense.

Oh, wait...

Better than Garret  . . . YES I know Callahan (sp) was supposed to call the plays. It was clear, after a few games, Garret resumed the duties.

I didn't think I would ever witness an owner like Al Davis, in his later years, who could destroy a team with his power.  Well, I was wrong.  Jerry is becoming an Al Davis clone!  the Cowboys have no hope until he relinquishes the GM duties, which he never will, so the circus goes on.

I have  been saying all year that more blame needed to  be placed on  Callahan, he somehow seemed to fly under the radar and all the blame went to Garrett even though Jerry stripped him of all play calling.

Sad when you wish Matt Millen was your GM.

I suppose they're trying to prove the best defense is a good offense. Good luck with that, knuckleheads.

This team is retarded...and I'm a Cowboys fan.

I don't know about all of this. Too many cooks in the kitchen. All this does is seemingly muddy up the chain of command. This team needs more focus in ALL respects and this doesn't support that thought process.

Great news!  The Cowboys got a new offensive coordinator.  Hmmm.  I'm betting they go 8-8 in 2014!

True. Just look at his time as Raiders HC especially the 03 season and you have all you need to know about Callahan.. Oh wait there was that embarassing run he had as Nebraska coach... How is he still getting jobs again?

@Cool  I think I'd be more concerned about not being able to stop a high school offense. It doesn't matter who calls plays, fact is this team is void of talent...it is not  'a couple players away from contending'. They haven't drafted well and are paying the price.

@bartle.dale  Dale - I feel your pain.  I've been a fan since 1972 when I moved to Texas.  I simply cannot understand how the post Jimmy Johnson era can be this colossally ridiculous.  Maybe Jerruh should admit what he is (and is not) and hire Jimmy Johnson to be the General Manager.

@John4 I am hoping they can go 8-8 next season. I am getting the feeling we are about to start seeing 5-11 seasons and will wish for the good old days of 8-8.

@John4 @bartle.dale Jimmy was the king of the draft, starters from every round, speed all over the roster, and he took no crap from any player. With Jerry, we're lucky to have guys on the roster 2 years after drafting them.
