Former Cowboys defensive tackle Josh Brent was sentenced to 180 days in prison and ordered to pay a $10,000 fine on Friday after he was convicted of intoxication manslaughter on Wednesday for a car crash in Dec. 2012 that killed former college and pro teammate Jerry Brown.

Brent was given a 10-year sentence, but it was suspended, so he’ll be placed on probation for that period of time, according to Calvin Watkins of ESPNDallas.com.

Brent could have been given up to 20 years in prison. The 180 days Brent was given are mandatory for a person getting probation in Texas, Watkins reports.

Brown’s family forgave Brent for his role in the incident but sued the nightclub the men were at for over-serving Brent, whose blood-alcohol level was more than two times the legal limit in Texas, according to police.

Would the "common man" get treated so lightly?  I think not!

He'll be out just in time to roam the Dallas sidelines.

Brent should have hired Donte Stallworth's lawyer, Stallworth served only 24 days for killing a man while driving drunk.

Should have gave this loser 20 years.

Six months for killing someone? How much in Texas for possession of a pound of weed? A lot more than six months. Yeah, makes sense to me, just like everything else in this f***ed up country.

   This goes to show ya  that money talks  and you know  what  walks... If  Brent   was appointed  one of those  dive bomber, court appointed  so called  Lawyers  he would have gotten  5  years in prison ...Know a person was killed  and it never should have happened  and all that  but  180  days ,  six months   was enough ..What he did was wrong  but you don't have to takes a  pound of flesh  ...And Brent  isn't the 1st person to get  more than  one  DWI ...It not right but it happens .. Know some people are atop  their soapbox  and want to hang  Brent  at  the town  square ...

Kinda, sorta wondering why nothing was said about the reaction of the Brown family after they found out that Mr, Brent basically walked.  It's one thing to forgive him, but another altogether when he gets a slap on the wrist for his part in taking the life of their son.  I also find it interesting that they would choose to sue the bar and not the driver.  Ask yourself who was more negligent.  Another blow to the concept of accountability.

All the more reason to legalize weed

I have ZERO issues with this sentense.... why? he didnt killed another motorist or a pedestrian... Two people were drunk that night decide to get in a car ..., it was a flip of the coin that Josh lived and his friend died... why should one person take all the blame for something they equally entered into regardless of whom the driver was... both were responsible that night and one of them end up dying... i dont understand why this even bothers people... we have many levels of justice in this country all the way up tp the no arrest list....if anyone thought Clemens was going to see one day in jail especially when his golfing buddy is Bush needs to open thier eyes....

Dany Heatley killed his friend speeding,  i find that situation more egregious becaue they werent intoxicated... we dont know if Dan Snyder asked Healtey to slow down or stop the car... the only reason Dany was not jailed because he had the blessing of the deceased family....

Two friends out drinking and something terrible happened. Bad decisions by both men but 1 is gone now. If Josh really drank 17 drinks then the Bar has to be held accountable. Thankfully nobody else was hurt , like children and Josh will still rebuild his life

Affluenza.  It is great when you can afford a good lawyer.

WOW Apparently a life isn't worth what it used to be.  A whole 6 months in prison and 10K?   What a joke.

Well, if you want to kill someone in our country just get drunk. That seems to absolve someone of their actions and responsibilities.

Well, we had a rich kid down here in Texas a couple of months ago that killed a mother and her daughter and paralyzed a couple of others. He was drunk and had a record. Got off with no jail time at all, because he was rich and used a defense known as "affluenza." Look it up. It is ok to get drunk and kill people in your car in Texas.

Maybe he can go riding with Bieber and see what happens.

"If Brent wants to play again he will still face NFL suspension but his 180 days in jail most likely will account for it."

Yeah, lets talk about him playing again instead of becoming a murderer. There is always sickle cell for him we hope

I think Brent is a good guy who felt just as bad as anyone else for his actions.  I hope he takes advantage of this second chance because not many people get them

Wow!!! What an Unbelievable sentence for someone that committed Murder on his SECOND DUI!!!!!!! Im sure any 1 of us would have gotten the same

@tahawusThat accident was not Stallworth's fault.  The guy ran in front of his car. Stallworth flashed his lights, tried to stop, and waited for the authorities at the scene.  A good guy and just bad luck for everyone involved.  The drinks had nothing to do with the death.  Not sure how much the judge took that into account when sentencing but it could have had some effect.

@tom.aikins- It's Texas, so, really, you can't compare it to, say, a black person killing a white person.

@x72 yea if only they had smoked some weed while getting drunk lips Brent could have driven so much better

@friendly--neighborhood--scrawler See if you feel that way if it was your son,daughter,brother,mother,father,best friend etc etc. It would be different if it had a major impact on your life and you know it.

@x72

What did you want?  Death by firing squad?

Every single person reading this story has gotten behind the wheel after taking a pain pill or a few beers or was sick and dizzy...it was SHEER LUCK that nothing happened to you all.

I hate DUIs...but selective enforcement is wrong.

Basically this country needs a great mass transportation system.  We need light rail, bullet trains, and so on.  But this country is addicted to driving huge cars at incredible speeds.  And beer and tequila commercials tell us that getting blasted is just fine!

Think about it.  Bars close at 2 am.  People pour out of the bars with BAL (Blood alcohol levels) much higher than .16.  Yet no one prevents people from driving home.  Always seemed strange to me.

Ahhh..Americans!  Don't take our big cars and guns away from us...so people will continue to die and/or be mangled for life.  Some people think this is a fair exchange for our "freedoms."  I don't.

@Chris10 It's Texas and he only killed a black guy.  If he ran over a little blonde white girl, he'd be looking at 20.

@WHO*IS*ESPN Why do you always wish a disease on someone? Are you that fed up w/your life, that you want everyone else to suffer? He had his day in court, Browns family forgave and still love him. Time for you to move on, too. Do us all a favor and move to Yahoo.

@stewartjk1 Stallworth had a BAC of .12, was reportedly also stoned, and was speeding when he hit a pedestrian. He was convicted of DUI manslaughter.  I would hardly describe him as being a "good guy".

@nyhoukcdal

EVEN Worse !!!!   he wasnt drunk in your eyes and he got in a car with a guy who has been drinking....

and stop with this legal crap... laws are for people like you that dont know any better... from the time you put first bottle or glass to your mouth and start drinking...you are drunk in my books... period... again law and rules are for some people not for all.

@HelenEschenbach@x72

Helen, despite opening with a false statement ("Every single person...") I generally agree with what you said.  We've been brainwashed, and a better mass transportation system would be really cool.  Will it happen anytime soon?  No.

More on the brainwashing thing by commercials and whatnot: I think it has more to do with our personal definitions of masculinity as defined by our fathers as we grow up.  This works under the presence that most DUIs are for men behind the wheel.

I think, generally, the idea of a masculine man includes a man who drinks and is willing to take risks.  I lucked out and was raised by a very masculine father (hunts deer, into sports and played football in college, etc.) but rarely drinks.  We are talking half a dozen beers a year.  As a result, I drink even less.

Goes back to the parents I guess.  Rant over.

@eddie767 @WHO*IS*ESPN It always is a person of color that he has issues with too. Racist piece of crap who wouldn't have the balls to say in person what he writes while hiding behind the anonymity of the internet. AKA...a loudmouth p*ssy.

@SriPanth

if you went by one rule ....alcohol passes your lips you are drunk... period , law be damned ....so save your B.S.  crap about what is legally drunk.... we all know alcohol effects us all different, then add medication or some other stimulant...They made up the B.S. number so they wouldnt have to lock up thier citizens left center and right... if only chinese , indians or so on drank and drove i bet you a million dollars there would be a zero tolerance.. so once you get in the car its all on everyone in the car... and dying doesnt take the blame off you and put it on the other guy.. we all have to take responsibility for the decisions we make in life...

SriPanth
SriPanth

@friendly--neighborhood--scrawler @nyhoukcdal you are so ignorant it hurts. It is so easy to convince someone that they are not drunk. If Brent's BAC was twice the legal limit, it would have been 0.16, in which case his motor skills would have deteriorated but he wouldn't be trashed. So he could easily have convinced Brown that he could drive, why he would so however I don't know, maybe he wanted to look macho or get his friend home asap.
