Bucs’ Darrelle Revis: ‘I feel like I’m the best’ cornerback

The debate about who the NFL’s best cornerback is always a hot topic and Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Darrelle Revis is ready to take back that title.

But first, he weighed in on Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman.

“Don’t get me wrong he’s an entertainer, but he shouldn’t have said that,” Revis said Wednesday, via NFL.com. “The reporter asked him a question about the team and he went on to answer about me, me, me, me. So that is how I took it. He didn’t answer the question in the right way.”

“I feel like I’m the best,” he said. “Deion Sanders probably feels like he is the best. Everybody has their own personal opinion. And that is how you go with it and I think that is what makes it fun.”

Revis made this year’s Pro Bowl a season after missing part of 2012 with a torn ACL. He had 50 tackles and two interceptions this season.

 “(Sherman is) saying he’s the best,” Revis said. “I’m saying I’m the best, Joe Haden thinks he’s the best. You can go by numbers, you can go by the ball not being thrown to your side so many times, there are so many variables in it. But at the same time, we are all talented players.”

revis man... let it go.

but to be fair... when revis was considered the "best" he did actually shut down better WRs every week (for some reason steve johnson - bills had good games against him) in a jets defense with no pass rush and much much lesser safety play than the seahawks currently have IMHO.

Do these "best" prefer to be called THUGGERS or THUGGAS ??

Unless cornerbacks play against the exact same teams, and cover the exact same receivers, there is NO way to claim to be the best cornerback in the league. Let all the top cover guys face Calvin Johnson, with Peyton Manning throwing... that would be a good measuring stick. Sherman had a lot of picks against subpar teams with subpar quarterbacks. But he is a great cornerback. But so was Deion Sanders, Champ Bailey, and several others. I remember back in the 80s when the Niners had both corners and safeties make the Pro Bowl as starters after winning the Super Bowl. Ronnie Lott, Eric Wright, Carlton Williamson, and the last one I can't remember off the top of my head.

SI should have put down his full statement instead of trying to rile up a bunch of people whose comments seem to reflect that they didn't bother to actually read all of his comments as opposed to one sentence. All he said was everybody thinks they're the best and then he said that they were all talented players. Seemed pretty gracious to me, but then, of course, comes the trolling and crying from the "experts." Revis "is a classless twit"? Wow, what a classy statement from somebody talking about somebody he doesn't even know.

We saw you play, Darrelle.  All year.

It was, at times, painful to watch.  And the fact is you are not the best cornerback in the NFL, and the fact that you are in the Pro Bowl is laughable.

Just count your money and be quieter, please.

No, I'm the best cornerback in the league.  Now, I don't play NFL football, and have never played football other than when I was a kid in my back yard with my friends, but that's beside the point.  I feel as if I am the best cornerback in the league.

I completely forgot that Revis was still in the league.

One thing for certain is that both he and Sherman are classless twits.

Sure you are. Keep thinking that. That's why you were in such demand last off season right?

I believe Revis is the best.  Not this year, but going into next year.  He will be fully healed.  If Sherman blew his knee out, his next year probably wouldn't be dominate either.  Revis was the anchor of one of the top d's in the league and it wasn't the Jets o that took them to a couple AFC championships.  He was given heavy consideration for defensive player of the year.  Don't hold his and the Jets troubles and/or his injury against him.  With him being healthy next year, we will see.

Besides, Sherman may just be an average corner since he is only covering "sorry" Crabtree.  See he doesn't give his opponents any credit, why should he get credit?

Revis is just stating that all corners think they are the best. I'm sure he knows Sherman is the best as of now, but he makes a point that ALL corners think they are the best.

HA sorry revis you are on your way out of the league.  I see another 3 years at most.  Declining years at that.

Revis needs to keep quiet. The guy was a hell of a player for the Jets but he quit on the Bucs. Lost all respect for him. Looked like he was just in it for the money. Sherman is class and would play at the same level if traded to another team.

Let's see.  Go by the numbers.  Sherman's 8 ints to Revis' 2.  Go by the ball not being thrown to your side of the field.  Sherman had the ball thrown to his side of the field, the least of any CB in the league this year.

So Sherman got the fewest chances for picks, and got the most picks.  Hmmm, wonder who is better.

As for his comment about Sherman being asked a question about his team and then going on about himself?  The question she asked was, "Richard, tell me about that last play".  Strange, that seems kind of like she is wanting to know about him, and the play that he just made.

Revis is the most overated player I have EVER seen in the league in over 30 years of watching NFL football.  I will never understand the hype of the man

I've met certified morons who have scored higher than 990 on their SAT . Yet Sherman is called a genius and smart because he went to Stanford on a football scholarship despite his 990. Can someone please explain again why he is intelligent? His GPA and class rank means nothing since he went to Dominguez HS in Compton. Sure he has made something out of nothing but it doesn't mean he is any smarter than Corky from Life Goes On.

Get over it Darrellie ...............Sherman is a real man with a real man's name............and he can smoke your butt at corner back, anytime of the day.

except you are not the best revis, and if you think you are, you should retire because you will never be the best (or anything close) with that attitude.

If Sherman was so bothered by being labeled a thug why did he do a beats commercial and let them call him a thug.

I remember Brandon Marshall stealing Sherman's lunch money with 10 catches for 165 yards last year. Definitely not a shutdown corner...

@J57

fitzgerald is probably the best WR of the bunch and he has been thirsty for a QB that can get him the ball since warner left...... last year I had him in fantasy and he recorded ZERO catches in multiple games.    not his fault though.

fuggetaboutit909
fuggetaboutit909

@J57

pro reference has it as lott, williamson, wright & dwight hicks niners 1984 team.... really good team with lott listed as left cornerback??

you echo my sentiments.....  sherman is in a division where the WRs overall are not exactly top notch and the best QB is arguably kaepernick who beats teams with his legs mostly.   revis by comparison had to shut down randy moss with brady throwing to him on a jets team with no pass rush and mediocre safety play.

If I had 450 Billion I would be wealthy. In sports and even now in life it's what have you done for me lately? What year did Darrelle Revis take the Jets or now the Tampa Bay Bucs to the Super Bowl in his 7 year career. In 3 years, Sherman has as many INT's and now has his team in the Super Bowl in his 3 year career.

Michael Crabtree is a Sh!t talker in the NFL among many others so why won't the NFL release the unedited talk between Sherman and Crabtree? Why not ask Crabtree what was said to Sherman at Larry Fitzpatrick's golf charity? What makes Crabtree so special? Crabtree didn't show up in the Super Bowl last year and he was shut down in the NFC Championship game this year like he was against the Giants 2 years ago.

Not many people care all that much about the opinions of anonymous writers who criticize the accomplishments of others. Obviously, you have a lot of free time to spend at your Internet keyboard. The question is why? Is there nothing else you can be doing with your life?

BillRobinson

@MrArlington

For one thing, Sherman is a far better writer who has has accomplished much in his short life.

Patokev

@MrArlington C'mon, the SAT is a rubbish test, you expect his school in Compton was prepping everybody for that test like they do at many private schools in the country. It hardly had any bearing on his success at Stanford, did it?  I am working in China right now and can tell you there are loads of kids who devote a lot of time and money on that test alone to get into universities in the US. They find the "Maths" section SIMPLE mostly and the English section a bit of a struggle as it is often a second or third language. Even so there vocabulary often ends up better than the "natives" because of their studies.

Darryl Barkley
Darryl Barkley

The only person here and on other sports outlets have NOT referred to Richard Sherman as "Genius" but YOU! His GPA & SAT has nothing to do with anything. Jim Harbaugh offered him a scholarship to play at Stanford in trying to get athletes at Stanford, he made the best of his opportunity carrying a 4.2 GPA while there.

If you personally don't like Sherman despite NOT knowing him on a personal level but because he screwed up your Fantasy Football league or beat your favorite team or you're a closet racists, this forum is NOT for you. Keep that B.S. to yourself. What facts in real NFL stats is Sherman wrong. In the last 3 years Sherman has 20 INT's, Revis has 21 over the past 7 years. I can't name a relevant CB on my Detroit Lions team but I'm sure they have the confidence of Revis but you and everyone else will be quick to point out that they are ranked 30th in the NFL as a team in defense and are considered irrelevant in the NFL by the numbers individually.

fuggetaboutit909
fuggetaboutit909

@JamesF.King I thought the beats thing was cleaverly done......  sherman doesn't respond to that insinuation.   he should do that more often.

sporra01

@Joe R2 OK, OK....OK, here is your lesson for today. Brandon Marshall, hereafter known as BM, caught only 4 passes for 58 yards against the lest side of the field. Which is where Sherman ALWAYS covers wr's. BUT...he did catch 6 passes for 107 yards against the midfield and the right side when he lined up in those areas. If you want to talk shi*....do it with facts. You might come across as smarter than usual. Oh yeah....BM also had ZERO touchdowns. Why you no mention that lil tidbit??

fuggetaboutit909
fuggetaboutit909

@Darryl Barkley

basically if crabtree is "mediocre" than what sherman was able to do against him isn't a great feat..... more importantly, kaepernick isn't as strong a passer as he is a runner so again what he was able to do in that spot was good but given his own opinion of the competition.... not so great.

HypoCycloid
HypoCycloid

@Darryl Barkley Never said Crabtree was special.  I am saying that Sherman is saying that an average corner can make the plays he makes when whoever he is covering is "sorry".  One should never discredit their opponent.  Besides, it doesn't matter what was said at the charity.  So is Sherman showing poor sportsmanship or is he taking a private matter to the national level.  I don't care about his private life.  I don't like poor sportsmanship either, but this has no bearing on my feelings on corner play.  Acting like Sherman isn't a smack talker?  He even smack talks sports show hosts when he is invited on their program!

I agree it is what have you done for me lately.  Sure in the last two years, 90% of the corners have done more than Revis since he missed a season and is just now getting healthy.  And this was my point.  I feel Revis is a better overall corner than Sherman when healthy.  Also, football is a team sport.  Do you feel that Lynch and Moreno are better than AP?  They helped their teams get into the superbowl, but AP hasn't been.  My point...Sherman didn't singlehandedly get his team into the superbowl.  He was certainly a key cog on the top defense and I give him credit for that.  But if given the choice on which of those two if I could pick one to be on my team, it is Revis.

DanaBunner
DanaBunner

@sporra01@Joe R2 In all seriousness, if BM played on Sherman's side only part of the game, perhaps less than 50% of the game, and made 4 catches on him, then BM definitely won that battle.
