Tom Brady on Richard Sherman: ‘We win with graciousness’

Richard Sherman and the Seahawks are going to the Super Bowl. Tom Brady and the Patriots aren’t.

Still, Brady doesn’t like the way Sherman acted after the Seahawks’ win in the NFC Championship Game on Sunday.

MMQB: Richard Sherman in his own words

“I don’t know him at all. I’ve watched him play. He’s that kind of guy,” Brady said on the Dennis & Callahan Show on WEEI Radio in Boston on Monday. “So, you know. I approach the game and I have respect for my opponents. That’s the way our team always plays.

“We win with graciousness, and when we lose, we could do better. Some teams don’t always do that, or that’s not their program. The only way to counter that is to beat them. When you don’t win, it’s hard not to say — you just gotta shut your mouth and listen to it. Maybe when you get an opportunity down the road, maybe that’s a source of motivation. But they got a good team, they played well all year. They played well at home. And that’s why they advanced, too.”

After the Seahawks beat the Patriots last season, Sherman went up to Brady to trash talk. He later tweeted a picture of the confrontation with a caption that read “U MAD.”

"Tom Brady's wife and supermodel, Gisele Bundchen, fired on the Patriots receivers for dropping passes. 'My husband cannot [expletive] throw and catch the ball at the same time,' she said in a video taken moments after the game."

Yeah Tom, everything about you in defeat is classy.............

Doesn't Brady always graciously scream at his teammates when things are going wrong? Hey Brady...shaaadaaap.

Did he say that quote after cussing out a ref after the game?

OttoMattik

Funny how he knew that, in most people's mind, he could get away with saying that. This guy has cursed referees out b/c he got tackled. He has run the length of the field to talk trash to someone. Even his supposedly-hottest- wife- in- the- world talks trash about his own teammates (after a loss but still...).

Classic Patriot hubris. Total lack of self-awareness.

Belichick sure proved Tom Brady wrong.  I guess it's "gracious" now to accuse a player of intentionally hurting someone and STILL sticking to it after the NFL said it was a legal play.  And didn't Brady try to impale Ed Reed with his foot last year when he graciously kicked at him?

Sherman sounded like a pro wrestler in the golden era of territories who was challenging "Nature Boy" Buddy Rogers to a Loser Leaves Town Match. If not for Erin Andrews acting as if she wanted to flee the stadium as quickly as possible and stumbling around to end the interview.......a solid sideline reporter could have had some fun with the hijinks and it would have hardly been such a mega-story for a couple news cycles.

Brady is absolutely delusional, period.  Fact - the Patriots are not gracious winners, period.  Fact - Belichick is a cheater and has not won a SB since he got caught, period.

SERIOUSLY?  SERIOUSLY?  This is the guy that runs up scores to pad his stats and trash talks whenever the camera isn't on him.  Kettle, meet pot.

Let's all reflect on how classy and gracious it was when Brady threw that fist-pump at the Jets bench after a touchdown not so long ago.  And let's not forget that the whole "U Mad Bro?" incident was preceded by Brady telling Sherman to come see him "After we beat you."

Brady slamming Sherman, much like Belecheater slamming Welker, is self-righteous hypocrisy at it's worst. Brady has been a renowned  trash-talker for years, and the Patriots run so many pick-plays the MMQB wrote it up BEFORE the game!

It's easy to be gracious in Victory, guys. Why is it when you lose, all we hear from you is complaints and sour grapes?

I'll suffer a fool, a boor or a loud-mouth clod. But hypocrites make me CRAZY!

Tom Brady & Bill Bellyache are 2 of the biggest whiners in the NFL. Tom tried to trashtalk Sherman & the Pats lost. Bill cheated for years & now he is ticked at Welker. Brady & Bill 'Shut & Up' or "You mad Bro"? LOL LOB. Go Peyton; go Russell Wilson. Should be a great Sunday in the Garden State!

Okay all of you anti-Sherman people out there.  Let's get the facts straight.

1)  When Sherman tried to shake hands with Crabtree at a charity event during the offseason hosted by Larry Fitzgerald of the Cardinals, Crabtree tried to start a fight with him and said things that he will not be forgiven for.

2) Richard Sherman was mic'd up by the NFL and Fox for the entire game.  They are going to show it on Fox on Saturday night.  You will all be able to clearly hear that Sherman went up to Crabtree, said "Nice game" and tried to shake his hand, only to get a hand in the face.

3)  Crabtree is not even man enough to talk about his stunt at the charity event.

So, who is the "thug"?  It isn't Sherman.

Oh, and by the way, a quarterback who publicly denounces his own receivers and is subsequently snubbed by his team has NO class.

Brady = all class

Sherman = common thug

Win with graciousness? Is he serious? When was that exactly?

Oh, that's right, it must be the very definition of graciousness to mock the opposing team by dancing on their logo at midfield after a playoff win. (Chargers-Patriots 2007)

CousinVinny75
CousinVinny75

Golden Boy may win with graciousness, but he and his head coach don't lose with class.

See: Brady after loss to Panthers berating the referees as they walk off the field.  Cam Newton would have been called a thug, and every other racial epithet in the book for doing that

Bill Belicheat not shaking Eric Magini's hand after loss to Jets, not shaking Coughlin's hand after the Super Bowl, Spy Gate, the ridiculous comments about Wes Welker, etc

certshelpingyou

Gracious my butt.

New England is one of the most dirty teams around and yet when they lost to Denver, Billicheat did nothing but whine and cry how "dirty" Wes was.

Sour grapes.....and projection.

Too bad Tom Brady isnt a good enough leader to lead his team back to the superbowl.

Sherman is was and always will be a player lacking in any kind of class.

As a plank owner of the Seahawks, I find his actions as being disrespectful of and to the Seahawk organization and fans.

Never would you hear that from the truly great players of any team, and lest we forget...Sherman has won nothing yet, lost so very much and can never be a truly great player in anyones eyes. CLASS is part of being truly great.  May the Hawks fly far above sherman

Sure wish your buddy Wes Walker could say the same about you and your Coach--Tommy .

Its cool to trash talk during the game but not before or after right Tommy?  How about spying, is that winning with Graciousness?

kaiser28

Brady is a washed-up crybaby who pouts and cusses in every game when things don't go his way, and his team was busted for being the biggest cheaters in the NFL.

duckfan59
duckfan59

Well, Tommy, you may win with graciousness. That's the easy part of the equation.

Based on you yelling at the refs for a non-call at the end of one game (a good non-call IMO), cussing and then walking out of a press conference after another loss and your coach's whining about Welker after the loss to the Broncos Sunday (does anyone really think a guy coming off a concussion and other injuries is going to purposely try to target a larger opponent?), it appears you have a long way to go to be a gracious loser.

joeblog
joeblog

ok, Tommy -- nothing more gracious than your defense doing the Eagles' dance (the Dirty Bird) against the Eagles in the Super Bowl... and your not shaking Eli's hand before your first SB against Giants ... and your coach's leaving the field with time left on the clock in the same game...  yes, the Pats are all about graciousness

wroger

Hey, you do you (the Belichick way) and we'll do us the Seattle way. There is no way... just people's opinions about someone else's way, and none of it matters. Brady and his father Belichick are on the couch now.

Don't like Brady but he's on point here. Sherman is a classless thug.

I need a new football record book. After hearing from the Seahawks fans and punks like Sherman I realize they have won 20 or 25 Super Bowls. But my record book says they have won zero. And for Sea hawk fans calling ANYBODY whiners, the world record for shining was when they lost the only SB they ever got in.

@Psy Power I agree Erin Andrews blew a golden opportunity for a once in a life time career changing interview

Pfffttt! Yeah - whatever! Real classy guy... His team was caught cheating, he trash talks on the field and worst of all he POUTS LIKE A LITTLE 2yr old when he LOSES! At least Sherm has the passion and talent to back up his claim! As a lifelong fan of the Hawks, I couldn't possibly be more proud than to have as passionate and jacked up player as Sherm on our DEFENSE!!! GO HAWKS!!

Fleeb

@x72 Yes, it's so classy to take a pot-shot at a guy you "don't know," who's on his way to the big game, while your lackey cleans out your locker.

Y-AntoinetteEchols

When did cheating & pouting become class behaviour & trying to shake an opponents hand considered classless. Your value system frightens me. I pray you are not an educator, agent of the court, or any other positions of authority.

@Sixgun It takes more than 1 person to win or lose a game. It was a miracle the Pats got to that championship game with all of the injuries they had from the beginning of the year & Brady himself played injured.

RobKnorr
RobKnorr

@zoowho2  Who died and made you the arbiter of who does, and who does not have "class"? For that matter, who decides what "class" is...you?

Class is entirely subjective, but to me, a kid who grew up in an infamously tough neighborhood, but REFUSED to get into the gang mentality, because he preferred to idolize his garbage truck driver father, who showed him a work ethic every day; a kid who RESISTS the labels of jocks, the idea that jocks cannot also be smart, and actually chose to go to Stanford, precisely because of the seeming dichotomy of a football player from Compton going to Stanford, and to prove that  if he can, so can anyone; a kid who honestly considers what he does off the field MORE important than what he does on it; a kid who while on break from Stanford and visiting home, told the college tour bus driver to swing by his house so that he could tell the kids from his area that they don't have to settle for community college and lousy jobs, because if they work hard, they can do what he did.

I could go on and on, but Sherman to me is the very EPITOME of what a role model is!!
Richard Sherman should be held up as a HERO especially to inner city youths around the country, he's proving every day that you CAN make it out, and do something better than get involved in the gang life.
The irony is people calling the guy a thug, when there's no one who struggles harder than him, to prevent people from becoming one.

Go learn something then post!

@wroger I think poi is, there does not need to be a patriots way and a Seattle way, there is one way, that is good sportsmanship. Excuse it however you want, emotions, different "ways", bu bottom line, Sherman acted like a classless moron and he could take some advice from Brady because it is good advice, to act as a sportsman and not an idiot child.

@x72 Classless thug who graduated 2nd in his class at Stanford? I think not. Full of himself? Yes. Brash? Yes. But right now he is walking his talking. Let's see how often Peyton targets him. And yes Tom, you are a gracious loser...

@bdeviled11 You could tell by the way the rest of the panel members acted that it was no surprise to them that Brady would be trash talking and arrogant about a win on the field. I tend to believe Sherman on that. Which makes me wonder of the story about Crabtree wanting to fight him at a charity even t isn't also true.

wroger
wroger

@stujoe1966 @bdeviled11 well, it is interesting that Crab ain't saying anything! I'd bet he doesn't want to answer the questions about whether or not he started this mess at a charity event as claimed by Sherman. So show up Crab, otherwise it may seem that Crab was being a thug at a fundraiser LOL (with witnesses around? probably). Which is worse? Leave these young men alone I say!
