Justin Verlander on Richard Sherman: ‘If he played baseball he would get a high and tight fastball’

The sports world was quick to react to Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman’s all-time postgame interview on Sunday after the Seahawks beat the San Francisco 49ers to advance to Super Bowl XLVIII.

At the top of his lungs, Sherman shouted to Fox Sports’ Erin Andrews that he was the best cornerback in the NFL and trashed the play of 49ers receiver Michael Crabtree. Sherman broke up a pass in the end zone intended for Crabtree that would have positioned the 49ers to take the lead with less than 30 seconds remaining on Sunday.

Justin Verlander, the Detroit Tigers pitcher, was not impressed with Sherman’s bravado:

Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston, on the other hand, came to Sherman’s defense:

As did Duke Ihenacho, the Denver Broncos safety who will be going up against Sherman’s Seahawks in the Super Bowl:

For her part, Andrews, who conducted the interview, tweeted that Sherman was “candid”:

Here’s video of the interview:

Im glad Winston can play football...cause he would have a hard time coming up with an articulate resume....can you say Hysman Trofie.

Go Red Sox. Tell the truth people....if Tom Brady got traded to your team you would love it.

Glad to see that Jameis Winston has a firm grasp on the English language. Then again, the NCAA or college recruiters have never made kid's education a high priority.

Sherman on the other hand.... If he played baseball would get a high and tight fastball.

Headhunting is so classy...

Baseball has an accepted in-game form of punishment for the antics displayed by Sherman. Football doesn't.

If Hines Ward still played, Sherman wouldn't be running his mouth like he is because Ward would break his jaw and wire it shut.

Sherman is a classless PED user. He has Adderall Rage on game days.

Point of clarification. Verlander and Russell Wilson are from the same area of Richmond. Both of them played at the same Little League (at different times), and to guess, like most of Richmond he's probably pulling for Seattle. Go Hawks.

So Verlander would feed him a high hard one. Fair enough.

And then Sherman, being the kind of player he is, would park the next one in the seats.

GO HAWKS!

Justin "Regular Season" Verlander weighing in on something?

Verlander would son Sherman. Verlander's got about a foot & 150 lbs on him to boot.

To all the idiot's that say Sherman would kick Verlander's butt, simply because he plays football and Justin plays baseball: How do you know for sure? Most hockey players would mop the floor with Sherman. Plus, it's kind of  hard to be afraid of guys who wear gay, green shoes.

Yeah, Justin, and if you played football Richard Sherman would lay you out.

Justin Verlander just pointed out why pitchers should be suspended for multiple games after hitting batters.  In his mind assaulting a player with a deadly baseball has "class"

Thats why Baseball TV viewing is down. Maybe baseball players should be studying was to increase your tv viewing audience. in November......2013....Nnamdi Asomugha was released by the San Francisco 49ers. <---real classless organization.....his wife was 3 months pregnant. and that guy was the most soft spoken, polite cornerback ever. what did it get for him?

I hope Winston makes it in the NFL. If he doesn't he's in trouble.

I guess Mr. Winston must have had someone translate the inscription on the Heisman to him.  What language is that he's speaking?  Jeez.  FSU must have the most lax requirements of any D1 in the country.

no one gets paid to be classy.  what kind of a statement is that Ihenacho?  To suggest that one should only be classy because they are paid for it is a nice sentiment to suggest.

Class can not be bought.   Sherman will never have it.   Hope he enjoys his millions.

It would depend entirely upon what Sherman wore to the proceedings. If he wore any type of pants he would be easy pickings(for most men w/ a pulse). I say this because he would be face down after his pants slipped around his ankles. That's why most of the 'smart' ones ALWAYS bring weapons w/ them...

This is the main reason why the 'look' isn't necessarily a bad one for me!

This is why the media should wait a hour or so after the game before interviewing the players. Andrews' response was spot on. As for Verlander, throwing a baseball towards someones head from 60 feet away is much more cowardly than manly.

And then he wouldn't charge the mound because he'd be too chicken sh*t to go one on one vs Verlander.

I'd put my money on Sherman in that fight 100 out of 100 times!

notice verlander DID NOT SAY that he'd punch sherman in the mouth! he kept his threat in the subjunctive realm of "IF", so as not to get his PUNK A$$ kicked!

Wow, Jameis Winston goes to college?  I wonder how he got in?

Does Jameis Winston know how to speak English?

Nobody heard the exchange between Sherman and Crabtree after the play.  These players say all sorts of things to each other on the field that no one is privy to.  Sherman was obviously responding to something that was said to him and making it plain he wasn't taking any B.S. especially in light of having broken up the forty-whiners bid for a Superbowl appearance.  Emotions were high.  While not especially a classy move, it was REAL emotion coming into play.

As a hockey player, I definitely understand where verlander is coming from. If Sherman played hockey, he'd get punched in the face multiple times, and deservedly so. And it would probably happen all season long with the way he talks trash.

Rodney_Littlejohn

and, if verlander were a man, and not a PUNK, he'd never threaten to solve a manly difference of opinions with a weapon.

TYPICAL PUNK!!!

@6marK6 You mean the guy who started 3 games in last year's playoffs and gave up one run?

@duckfan59 "lay you out" lmao. No chance, Sherman would duck and hide, can't tackle worth squat.

@duckfan59 And if Sherman fought in the UFC, he would be killed. Let's help sign him up!

@GaryWashington

That it was plainly obvious that his playing days were over and he couldn't even crack the lineup in a DB poor 49ers team?

Nnamdi, though he may be a good person, is waaaaaaaaaaaaaay beyond his days as an effective player in the NFL.

@hanapapa ....I thought the same thing myself....we know how he gets HIS good grades now.

@ackortman funny, i've never seen any hockey players, or baseball players, who seem to love hitting folks, outside the rules of their respective games, anywhere near a boxing ring, or ufc cage.

EasyGoer

Nah, it's because Verlander plays in the b.s. DH league. He would not be so quick to run his mouth in the NL.

@EasyGoer I hope for anyone who might pass on your DNA that you're talking stupidly in an ironic way...

@EasyGoer Seems to me YOU are the one that needs to seek out an English professor.  Do the rest of us New Yorkers a favor and change your picture.  It embarrassing for the rest of that us that unlike you HAVE a brain. have a brain.  Feel that.

@EasyGoer ......yep...football is the # 1 thing in life....it's a good thing he can throw a football, because, other than that.....

@Rodney_Littlejohn @ackortman its not about liking hitting people. Its about an incredible level of disrespect. A lot of hockey players are not proud when they get in a fight. But fighting is allowed cause it cuts that kind of BS out of the game.
