In his Monday morning press conference, Patriots coach Bill Belichick called Wes Welker’s hit on Aqib Talib in the AFC Championship Game “one of the worst plays I’ve seen,” and that Welker made “no attempt to get open.”

The Broncos receiver was running a route over the middle early in the second quarter and set what appeared to be an illegal pick on Talib, though no penalty was called.

Talib injured his knee on the play and did not return to the game. Denver led 3-0 at the time and scored a touchdown on the drive to make it 10-0.

Welker, who caught four passes for 38 yards on Sunday, said after the game he wasn’t trying to injure Talib.

“It was one of those plays where it’s kind of a rough play and I was trying to get him to go over the top, and I think he was thinking the same thing and wanted to come underneath and we just kind of collided,” Welker told the Boston Herald. “It wasn’t a deal where I was trying to hit him or anything like that. I hope he’s ok. He’s a great player and a big part of their defense.”

Wes Welker, 5'9" 190 pound THUG!  What a brute!  Colliding shoulder pad to shoulder pad with a defender.  What horror!  Oh the Humanity!  Throw him out of the league!  Make him play for Oakland!

I actually respected Bill Belichick before that comment.  Now it feels good to call him a loser.  sore loser. loser.

"Seriously, I saw it from many, many of our video angles, and I read Welker's lips when he said 'I know I've had two concussions in the last month, but it's worth risking another to take out a much bigger DB.' "

NE and Belichick are so last decade.

They recently made the rules tremendously more open to casual picks and everybody does it on every team. But I think it cheapens the game to allow significant contact on routes both of them should have moved to avoid each other or been given a penalty, this play should have been called offsetting penalties and fines should have been issued for stupid and reckless play.

I guess Billy Bellyache must have missed the hit put on Rogers-Cromartie where the receiver's feet left the ground and put him out of the game for a few plays.  Now THAT is an illegal hit.  If Denver wanted to take Talib out of the game, do you think they would have done it with a smallish slot receiver who had missed several games due to concussions?  Get real, Bill.   And, Billy complaining about something that is not within the rules is the irony of ironies.  Stinks that he probably had to trash the videos he had of the 49'ers' and Seahawks' practices.....

So out of all the years Belichick has been involved in football this is ”one of the worst plays I’ve seen". Hyperbole anyone?

@ElvisHitler Welker needs to be heavily fined and be suspended for the Superbowl and the first couple of games next season.
