Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Percy Harvin will not play in the NFC Championship Game against the San Francisco 49ers because of a concussion, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said, according to Pro Football Talk.

Harvin did not practice all week and did not get clearance from doctors to return to the field.

“He will not make it through the doctors’ protocol and will not be able to go,” Carroll said. “It’s super disappointing for Percy — he wants to play. You can see it, he played his tail off when he had his chance, it’s just unfortunate circumstances.”

Harvin was injured in Saturday’s NFC divisional playoff win over New Orleans after hitting his head hard on the turf late in the first half. Harvin left the field earlier in the game after a hit by Saints safety Rafael Bush.  Bush was reportedly fined $21,000 for that hit, according to PFT.

The divisional playoff game was just Harvin’s second appearance since signing with the team in the offseason. He played one game in November after recovering from hip surgery in August and has played a total of 39 snaps all season.

He's fun to watch, but his style of play doesn't mesh with the fact that he's made of glass. As a Vikings fan, I can't say I don't miss him, but we traded away a bit of a headache (heartache)when we got rid of him...

This is HUGE news for the NFC Championship game.  Harvin is to the Seahawks as Crabtree is to the Niners.  His speed forces defenses to play honest on the back end and not simply overcommit to the run (and putting a safety over Golden Tate).  Seahawks passing game will look a lot like the Niners' passing game in the first matchup this season, when Kaepernick struggled to find anyone open.

More pressure on the Seahawks defense, because points will be a precious commodity for their offense.

I'm sure the Saints will pitch in for the $21k fine Bush got. #bountygatepartdeux

Niners fan here, but I feel for Harvin. He waited a long time to make his comeback and it lasted only 2 quarters of football.

I didn't think Carroll was going to play. He is kind of old!

@Boo-urns

Nah... betting lines did not change after this announcement. Seahawks are still expected to win by 3-4 points, most of that due to home-field. I've heard one bookmaker say that, at Candlestick, the line would be even. Harbaugh would be wise to run practice sessions with a P.A. system blasting 130dB jet noise.

@Boo-urns Harvin is the Seahawks Crabtree?  Too funny.  And I'm a Seahawks fan.  Tate is much more comparable to Crabtree than Harvin is.  Pretty sure we've done just fine without Harvin against the 49ers the last two times they've been at our house.  We'll just have to see how this plays out.....

@pk_sea FYI, Seattle was 2nd in the league in unnecessary roughness penalties this past year.
