After a season in which the Jets finished 8-8 and head coach Rex Ryan said he expected to be let go during the offseason, the team has reportedly reach an agreement on a multiyear extension to keep Ryan in New York, according to a tweet on Thursday afternoon from Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Terms of the agreement were not immediately known, but Ryan was set to enter the sixth and final year of the contract he had signed in 2009 when he came to the Jets. The 51-year-old has gone 42-38 since his arrival to New York, not including a 4-2 record in the postseason. He had made the AFC Championship in his first two seasons at the helm but has failed to take the Jets to the playoffs in the past three seasons.

In December, team owner Woody Johnson had said he will bring back Ryan for the 2014 season but that he would only get a one-year extension beyond next season.

Woody Johnson seems to be the type who isn't competing for a Super Bowl as much as he is against the Giants & Eli Manning for media attention. With Ryan as coach he & the Jets will always get as much or more attention than the G-Men will even if Giants win Super Bowl. If the media stops covering the Jets & the Giants start getting more press, Ryan will be fired even if they do win Super Bowl

Considering some people thought the Jets wouldn't win 2 games, going 8-8 is a minor miracle.

Do Geno Smith and Headband come with that multi-year extension?

Ryan is an excellent defensive-minded coach.  He needs to be teamed up with a solid offensive coordinator, though,.to balance that out or the Jets will never improve.

Do the Jets play in Bizarro World? Not firing him, OK, maybe, but contract extension? Is the bar that low? This guy is not really on the way up.

@Richard--Ramirez BB has a 7-4 lead on Rex in head to head play. I guess you have a different definition of "own" than most people...and if you seriously think Rex is a better coach, you don't know much about football.

@MarkPost What you meant to say is that he is an excellent defensive coordinator. Which he is. But that is all.

@GodofAcid The first thing I thought was that the Patriots would be happy. And here is a thank you from a Boston fan. I see many more division tittles ahead for New England.

@6marK6 @MarkPost RIght. His player management skills extend only to defensive players. The offensive players who say they would run through walls for him must be lying, right? Idiot.

@Rickapolis@GodofAcidI do believe they beat NE this year didn't they? That team finished 8-8 too. That has to be good coaching because I would have never believed they could ever end with a .500 record.

@Rickapolis@GodofAcidThat has a lot more to do with the dominance of the coach and QB in NE and the overall mediocrity of the rest of the division over the years than it does about who coaches the Jets.
