The Vikings hired Mike Zimmer as their new head coach on Wednesday morning, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Zimmer, who’s been the Bengals’ defensive coordinator since 2008, began his NFL career as the Cowboys’ defensive backs coach in 1994 before becoming the defensive coordinator in Dallas in 2000, a role he served until he took the same job with the Falcons in 2007.

SI WIRE: Drew Brees willing to restructure contract with Saints

Zimmer, 57, is Minnesota’s fourth head coach since 2005. The Vikings have only one playoff win in that span — 2009 with Brett Favre at quarterback. Zimmer is the ninth head coach in team history.

With the Vikings’ hire, only one head coaching job remains open — the Browns.

The Vikings (5-10-1) allowed the most points in the NFL last season at 31.1 points per game while the Bengals were sixth at 19.2 per game.

Great hire! By all accounts from Hall of Fame Coaches (like Parcells) down to players, Zimmer is a great coach and is ready to be a HC. Can't wait to see how he turns this team around. His first order of business needs to be hiring new a OC and a new DC. They need aggressive play-callers who know how to work with the weapons they do have. After that, they need to evaluate the systems they are going to put into place and pick up the FA and drafts picks that will help them with that vision.

The Vikings were less than 2 minutes combined from being division champs this year with those losses and that tie at the end of the games. With the right play calling and coaching that wouldn't have happened.

SKOL Vikings!

Ran the best D in the league, Vikes got a good one here.

I'm gonna predict division champs next season as the North is up for grabs and Zimmer will get things moving in the right direction asap.

Good hire. Glad to see him get a HC position. By all accounts, he's ready and has been ready.

About time Zimmer got a shot as a HC.

@Richard--Ramirez Other than having no QB, no D-line, no cornerbacks, no linebackers, half an O-line and 1(maybe) receiver, I'd say the ViQueens are only a couple wins away from third place in the north.

@Richard--Ramirez I like Zimmer and think he'll do well.

But they need a QB before I predict them to win the division.  The NFL is such a QB driven league now.

Rodgers is an awfully good QB.  Now if the Pack, the Lions and the Bears all had QB's like the Vikes do, then I'd say the Vikes could win the division next year.

@JoshFinn @Richard--Ramirez Try watching them...they have some holes (all teams do), but they have some pretty good defensive players.  Alan Williams just didn't do much with them.

@Sportsfan18 Meh...unless the NFC defenses step up drastically from last year, they can get away with Ponder, Cassel, and Freeman for next year, but, yeah, getting a new QB via the draft would be wise.

@Sportsfan18@Richard--RamirezI'm sure Zimmer will be addressing the QB issues as well as the OC and DC problems. I hope this guy shakes the heII out of the Vikings and makes them a viable team again.
