Sean Payton: Final play called for Marques Colston to stay inbounds

The Saints’ attempt to pull off a miraculous comeback against the Seahawks in their NFC divisional playoff game ended with receiver Marques Colston attempting an illegal forward pass rather than stepping out of bounds to stop the clock. Instead of having one more play to attempt a Hail Mary pass, the penalty burned the rest of the clock and left the Saints wondering “what if” in a 23-15 loss.

While Colston instantly became a Twitter target for his off-target lateral attempt and mental gaffe, Saints coach Sean Payton said Monday that Colston followed the play he drew up. Payton also admitted he should have called the play earlier.

From ESPN:

“We’re probably maybe a play early from [needing to call] it, but with no timeouts … ” Payton said. “We’d kind of seen something on tape, Marques has got a pretty good arm. You know, hindsight, [it was] a play where he could have caught it, stepped out and then maybe [we throw] a Hail Mary to the end zone. But it was a play we had put in a week and a half ago, prior to this game, which was a deep throw to Marques and then across the field to Cadet. So, yeah, he wasn’t freelancing.”

BURKE: Saints face big off-season questions

Colston said he followed orders, but the throw wasn’t his best:

“It’s a play that we worked on,” Colston said. “Obviously, it’s not an ideal situation (being behind with time expiring and no timeouts), but the ball came out. And obviously the throw didn’t go the way I would have planned. But, it happens.”

Who cares?

Just glad I don't have to look at that arrogant dwarf on the sidelines or his band of thugs for the rest of the season...

This is the kind of play you work on when you have NO faith in an overrated QB who amasses his numbers most weeks in garbage time of meaningless games!

I doubt that he ran the play the way that Payton drew it up. Even Payton knows the pass has to be thrown behind and not forward of Colston's position. Just a coach taking the hear off of a player for a numbskull play.

Too bad they weren't playing the Buffalo Bills, referees would have let the play go. #Musiccitymiracle.

I wonder if he offered Colston a bounty reward if he completed the pass?  Russell Wilson as obviously off the bounty list... at least for a couple more years.

"We're probably maybe a play early from (needing to call) it". The coach is saying that the play should not have been run at that time. It was a last play of the game idea. If Colston had stepped out it could have been tried on the final play, or the 'Hail' into the endzone could have been thrown. Coach does not want to hang the player out, but clearly that was not the way to go by Colston.

dude tried his best under exceptionally difficult conditions.  no reason for blame, he was playing the game...

Other than throw a bad pass, there's nothing wrong with what Colston did.  Desperate times call for desperate measures.

Reminds me of that band, Botch.

Time for all the armchair experts to chime in. You know, those whose biggest decision during the game is when to hit the refrigerator or go take a leak.

Well yeah it was called... he just made a bad throw and and should have gone out of bounds with the time left.

@tfawI just don't understand this self esteem baloney. It was a difficult condition but every pop warner player knows you can't throw a forward pass in that situation. Colston is a long time professional in the game. He screwed up royally, whatever chance the team might of had was wasted. Let's just leave it at that.

The wasn't that much time left when the play started...how does he know how much time was left? How much of an idiot would you be calling him if he stepped out and there was no time left. He probably thought that would be the last play of the game.

@donald5 Yeah, run out of bounds when you coach tells you to throw a lateral.  See how that goes for you

@donald5 You don't run out of bounds if the play is to throw a lateral. What do you not understand about that?
