Tom Brady: Nobody will be picking the Patriots this week

Tom Brady is playing up the Patriots as an underdog this week as they prepare for the AFC Championship Game in Denver.

Despite beating the Broncos in Week 12, New England has opened as a five-point underdog for Sunday. And Brady said in an interview on the “Dennis & Callahan” show on WEEI in Boston on Monday that it was the right role for his team.

“I know when we played Baltimore no one picked us to win and no one’s gonna pick us to win this week,” Brady said around the 14:45 mark of the interview. “We’ve had our backs against the wall for a while, really the whole season. We’ve lost players and teams have really counted us out. We’ve got a bunch of underdogs on our team and we’ll be underdogs again. We’ll see how that shakes out at the end of the week.”

BURKE: An early look at the AFC, NFC Championship Games

The Patriots won 44-7 in Baltimore in Week 16.

Brady is 10-4 in his career against Peyton Manning, including 2-1 in the playoffs, but Denver is 15-3 at home in Manning’s two seasons with the Broncos.

New England will be playing in the AFC Championship Game for the third straight year and has won five of its last seven trips to the conference title game.

Brady threw 25 touchdown passes in the regular season, failing to reach 30 for the first time since 2009, and he didn’t throw any in Saturday’s win over the Colts. He also has three straight games with fewer than 200 yards passing.

with good reason.

Wow. Are all football "fans" who are more concerned about hating New England than cheering for their own team this illiterate and incapable of using logic?

Seriously, I'm not even a Patriots fan, and I'm sick and tired of this Spygate garbage. They've been just as good statistically since. We're talking about 2014 and yet again another Patriots vs. Team X AFC Championship Game. We're not talking about legacies or asterisks. You idiots who can't just drop it and enjoy the theater should just clean off the Doritos crumbs from your out-of-contention NFL team Snuggies and find another forum to blast the Patriots, because neither they nor their fans care anymore.

No Tom. Lots of people will pick the Patriots, even a Patriots hater like me.

Peyton is Always strapped with an Idiot defense or a special teams group that allows other teams to recover onside kicks or 100+ kickoff returns.Brady enjoys being on the best coached team in the NFL.

Sorry Tom. There is absolutely no way you can play the underdog card. It's not 2001.

Tom Brady is a great QB.  He is a winner.  He is also the biggest whiner in the the NFL, as identified by the defensive players around the league.  But, he and his head coach understand how to motivate young and inexperienced players.  They know how to get players to play with a "chip on their shoulder".

But this season belongs to Peyton Manning.  He is just that good.

What a joke.  This underdog thing hasn't been the case since they beat the Rams.  And for all the Patriots fans out there - sure, Pats are best team that hasn't won a title in past 9 years, but that's it.  Belichik hasn't won it all since he had guys like Vrable, Bruschi, Seymour, Law and other difference-makers on defense.  And that will repeat this year.  Brady has been lights out since they last won it all and what has it got them?  Nothing but, again, being the best team to not win it all.  And if they get past Denver, San Fran or Seattle do to them what the Giants did - TWICE.

If by "nobody" he means "everybody," then yes, that is correct.

The Patriots are cheaters and the entire nation will be rooting AGAINST them like they do every week. The only exception being Patriots fans. New England Patriots*

It's not because the nation believes you won't win, Tom.  It's because we're all tired of seeing you in the Superbowl.

Yeah the classic Brady and Coach Bill ... Us against the world no one wants us to win, they're saying we can't win, were 50pt underdogs, they say we are washed up with no name players.. Ok we heard this motivational speech every year by the patriots. How can Brady ever be a underdog when he can't be touched without a 15 yarder?

The only NFL team Brady has a losing record against is Denver, 5-7.

FYI - Jake Plummer was 4-0 against Tom Brady... I guess that makes him better???

Brady is just trying to use psychology. The majority will pick the Pats with facts to back them up as a valid pick.As a neutral viewer would love to see a nail biter & not a blow out.

No Tom-tom, "everybody" will be picking the Patriots this week. Denver was a much better team last year than now and the Broncos blew it;That's the last chance Denver and Peyton will get for awhile. When New England thumped the Ravens earlier this year, they proved they're the best team in the AFC (except for Pittsburgh, which got jobbed by the refs).

When Tom Brady talks  to the media it's always about  the team - "we" "us" etc. When Peyton Manning talk it's always about him.  That's why it isn't surprising that Tom Brady has a much better playoff record than Peyton Manning.

@x72  Keep telling yourself that fact if it makes you feel better about your team.

Another fact is the Pats are 88-24(79%), 16-0 in one of those seasons, won 6 of 7 division titles, 2 AFC championships, played in two super bowls, won tow MVPs (Brady) and 2 COY(Belichick) since "spygate".

I'll take tat record every time.

What has your losing team done?

@nygiants56 The Patriots have the best running game in the league right now and Philip Rivers in the second half Sunday showed that Denver's secondary sucks.  Patriots by 17 points.

Gee, I must have made the hairs on your neck stand up, as evidenced by your rant in caps.  lol

Actually, there's no need for me to detail my reasoning for the things I said about 'cheating Bill' et al. The penalties (see below) speak for themselves.

By the way, I urge you to take a pill.  lol

"Penalty and fines....

On September 13, for the "use of equipment to videotape an opposing team’s offensive or defensive signals,"[3] Belichick was officially fined $500,000 — the largest fine ever imposed on a coach in the league's then-87-year history,[19] and the maximum permitted under league rules. The Patriots were also fined $250,000, and stripped of their first-round selection in the 2008 NFL Draft; if the Patriots had missed the playoffs, they would have forfeited their second- and third-round selections instead.[3] Goodell said that he fined the Patriots as a team because Belichick is effectively the team's general manager as well as head coach, and exercises so much control over the Patriots' on-field operations that "his actions and decisions are properly attributed to the club." Goodell considered suspending Belichick, but decided that taking away draft picks would be more severe in the long run.[20] The Patriots officially clinched their fifth straight AFC East title on November 25, making them the first NFL team since the 1971 Miami Dolphins to have a first-round pick taken away by league action.[21]

The next day, Belichick issued a statement in which he apologized for what he called a "mistake" in his interpretation of the rules. However, he denied ever using videotape to gain an advantage while a game was underway, which Goodell also acknowledged.[22]

On September 16, Goodell ordered the Patriots to hand over all notes, tapes, and other materials related to the incident, threatening further discipline if the Patriots did not comply.[23] On September 20, the NFL announced they had received and destroyed the requested materials.[24] In his pre-Super Bowl XLIIpress conference, Goodell revealed the contents of the materials, saying there were six tapes from late in the 2006 season and the 2007 preseason.[25]"

Patriots are cheaters. They consistently cheat, "Spygate" wasn't the first instance nor was it the last. You say in your first comment, "OMG HOW DID THEY CHEAT GIVE EVIDENCE" then in your next comment you ADMIT that they cheated. You reason their cheating because other teams had done it before.

Patriots got caught. They were also obviously the best at said form of cheating based on their regular and post season success. They cheated and got caught. And caught again. And again.

Get over it, God.

@nypd2726

OK, here's the real facts.

Prior to the 2007 season, ALL 32 teams tried to steal the other team's signals.  Pretty much the way baseball teams try to steal the opposing catcher's signals or the base coaches signals.  It is part of the game, always has been, and always will be.

However, what the NFL did, just prior to the start of the 2007 season, was to send a memo to all 32 teams saying that the use of video cameras on the field will not be allowed any longer for the purpose of videoing the opponents sidelines......

Take note that the memo was sent to ALL 32 teams, not just the Patriots. The reason that it went to all 32 teams was because ALL OF THEM tried stealing opponent's signals and many of them used video cameras to do it as well as other methods.  (people with binoculars in the stands, even in the press box and other methods)  It was common practice.

So, just before the start of the 07 season, Roger Goodell send a memo to ALL teams saying that the use of video cameras would no longer be allowed.  HE SAID NOTHING ABOUT ANY OTHER METHODS THAT TEAMS MIGHT BE USING...

In the Patriot season opener, there was a Pats person with a video camera on the Jets side of the field.  The Jets saw it, and using the new rule issued by Goodell, just days earlier, had the camera confiscated.

Belichick made a mistake, he came up with a "lame" excuse but the fact is that ALL 32 teams had been doing it for years....  Belichick was wrong, he and the team Paid the price...

BUT THERE WAS NO CHEATING..... what he was doing was EXACTLY the same thing that ALL 32 TEAMS had been doing for years, ttempting to steal the opponents signals.

.

Those are the facts.  If you have different "facts", you have the floor.....

@Mark112 When you finish 8-8 you have no business complaining about the outcome of another game, you had 8 other chances to win one game for yourself.

@kcobrien90 @MikeAllen Check your facts. First, stealing signs, by itself,  is not against the Rules and still isn't. Using a camera to do it is against the Rules.

Second, the Patriots record overall (not counting super bowl wins) after they were caught is almost identical to the record before they were caught.

Third, after the incident, they went undefeated that season and lost in the super bowl on a miraculous catch by the Giants TE.

@MikeAllen @nypd2726 Thanks for that.  I try to explain the same thing to people I know whose hatred for the Patriots approaches the pathological, but you set it out more clearly and concisely than I ever did.  Mind if I borrow it (with due credit, of course)?

@Robert27 @Richard--Ramirez  He's not clever, he's pathetically jealous. All of the loser types who babble about TB seem to forget that he was a 6th round pick, who split time in college, and was not even a starter until an injury put him there. His cool factor, athletic success, and rich wife, all seem to drive them over the edge. Hard to figure.

nygiants56

@F4@kcobrien90@MikeAllen  Seriously?  Still peddling the "miracle" angle?  Where was the Patriot defense AFTER that catch?  And where were they after the Manningham catch the second time the Giants beat them.  Face it - Giants were better when it counted on both occasions.

Oh that is so true. It just pisses people off when you come from the back of the pack and dominate at a record rate.

He's got the hot wife.

The biggest house on the hill and still stay humble. Sure he's got fire in his belly he's only human. But he sure doesn't play like it.

I'll never forget that game when he scored two td's in 60 seconds to beat Cleveland by one after being dominated for 59 minutes... Well done.
