Alabama hired former USC head coach Lane Kiffin as the the school’s new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, the school announced Friday.

Kiffin will replace Doug Nussmeier who left Alabama on Thursday to become offensive coordinator at Michigan.

Kiffin was fired by USC in September after a 62-41 loss at Arizona State.

Kiffin spent six seasons at USC under Pete Carroll as an assistant, including the final two seasons as offensive coordinator. He was also head coach at Tennessee and for the Oakland Raiders.

Alabama head coach Nick Saban said that Kiffin visited the team before the Sugar Bowl “to share ideas and exchange ideas … [for] professional development.”  Alabama lost the Sugar Bowl 45-31 to Oklahoma.

“We are excited to have Lane join our staff,” Saban said. “He is an outstanding and creative offensive coach who has great experience both at the college and NFL level. He has a very good understanding of the game and I have always been impressed with what I saw in the games he called. He coaches with a great deal of passion and enthusiasm, and also does an excellent job as a teacher. Lane will be an outstanding addition to our coaching staff and we look forward to him and his family joining us at the University of Alabama.”

Not sure how this loser keeps landing these kush jobs. Must have his wife suck of the coaching staff before he gets hired on. You seen her? That's prob worth a couple years probation.

Bama on probation in two years. This is really sad. I am a Vols fan, but I really respect what Bama has been able to do. this is the kiss of death for Saban's program. By the way, As on OC at USC, he ran Norm Chow's offense. Kiffin is no genius in any area.

How does this guy keep getting top flight jobs?

@WestcoastMD He is terrible as a head coach but seemed to be a decent coordinator.  As long as he is not the figurehead, I think it will work out.  Anyway, Saban doesn't let his assistants talk to the press except a few rare times a year.  A silent Lane, is a good Lane.  Look at Pittsburgh's D Lebeau.  He was a terrible head coach but Hall of Fame defensive coordinator.  There is a big difference between the two jobs.

@WestcoastMD Kffin, like many coordinators are good at being a coordinator, but not a head coach. But if he can survive and grow under Saban, he might just become a good head coach yet.
