Jay Gruden: “Robert Griffin III is the starter”

New Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden didn’t waste any time clearing up the messy quarterback situation he inherited in D.C.

In an appearance on 106.7 The Fan, Gruden declared that “Robert Griffin III is the starter. There will be no competition.”

Gruden was hired as Washington’s new head coach Thursday, but he did not immediately address Griffin’s situation in his introductory press conference. Griffin was controversially inactive for the Redskins’ final three games of 2013, amid the power struggle between former coach Mike Shanahan and owner Daniel Snyder. Kirk Cousins started the final three games for Washington, completing 69 of 130 passes for 747 and four touchdowns against five interceptions. Griffin finished 2013 with 3,203 passing yards, 16 TDs and 12 interceptions, plus 489 rushing yards.

Yes he will be the starter until he gets hurt again....another Michael Vick...heck, not even.  He's another JaMarcus Russell...an overpaid waste of money.

I pretty sure Jay will call the plays that fits RG3 better than Shanahan did. Jay is better with all that option crap that's in the NFL now.

This story was reported by the Robert Griffin Network three days ago.

If the Skins had won Shanahan would be there. Of course u have to protect RG3.1 because of all the $ on him. Now with Gruden the games will be fixed to make sure he wins. The NFL can only win if RG3.1 wins.

Jay Gruden got the job by repeating that mantra 10 times to Dan Snyder. "There will be no competition. There will be no competition. There will be..."

Then the Redskins are automatically eliminated from the 2014-2015 postseason.

perhaps he got trapped by a media question.  seems like a dumb statement to just say in isolation.

The Redskins will always be a poor team as long as Snyder is an active owner.  Placing Gruden as head coach is just another example of Snyder's ineptitude.  However, Gruden did exactly what Snyder told him...make RGIII the starting QB immediately.  Redskin fans will have a very long and difficult road to haul.

Just remember Jay, you will be the coach as long as RGIII says you are the coach. The tail wagging the dog I think. The stroking RGIII's ego continues. Maybe his Father could be the QB coach, then this circus is all set.

Big mistake Jay, this guy is a bust and a definite coach killer.

Well grudens first mistake as coach! naming a starting QB!  It's good to have some competition for QB spot. I believe both r good QB's..............

This comment assures the trade of Kirk Cousins. It looks like Gruden's very first objective is to avoid a QB controversy. But, as long as Cousins is on the roster, there is a strong chance for controversy. Think about it. If RGme stinks up the joint in the first three games of the season (which is highly likely), the fan base will be clammoring for Cousins, if he is on the roster.

RGIII is the franchise QB because they pay him the money to be one. Guy has an average year at best one year removed if that from tearing up his knee. I hope he tears up next season so many can eat crow. Gruden was a solid higher folks get over yourselves.

How was that Mr. Snyder? As "HC", what would you like me to say and do next? ---- Jay Gruden

Time for Gruden to call Jason Garrett so he can better understand his role.

Really, no competition?  I guess the incentive of working, training, and learning the playbook inside and out, are... well it is non existent.  Disappointing to read this because it means he is letting Snyder coach the team along with the help and advice of RG3.

Did Snyder name any other players that will not be competing for their position?

I doubt if there will be many victories either, but that is the Snyder curse.

does this unnecessary public declaration seem a bit clueless?

Question was asked by the press and the new coach stated his view on it. As a Bengals fan I assure you there was never a chance of RGIII not being the starting QB next year. He is the franchise.

@CoolLOL - You think Tom Brady, Peyton Manning or any of the other top guys "compete" for the position or do you think Peyton Manning starts week #1 regardless of what happens in the pre-season? This is an utter non-story. There is nobody on the roster as good as RG3 and that's all that matters.

@Frank14

Not at all.

The question is being asked by everyone.

The coach is getting out in front of it before a non story becomes a media driven story.

Now that that is taken care of, the team can focus on preparing for the 2014 season.

@therantguy @Cool nobody on the roster is as good as RGIII at being RGIII: a phenomenally gifted athlete... that doesn't equate to being a winning NFL quarterback, which includes many intangible skills that don't show up in the stat sheet, combine scores and the like. As a DC native, I love watching RGIII and appreciate how he generally conducts himself in the community, but I won't be surprised that, if given the right opportunity, Kirk Cousins will have a longer career with a better winning percentage- perhaps precisely because he is less "athletic" and more likely to enjoy the QB protection likely to be found in the NFL where you can run but you cannot hide.

@therantguy @Cool When RG3 has 5-10 years under his belt we can talk.  This is what happened when Ryan decided that Sanchez was his QB no matter what.. refused to make it a competition.

But you go ahead and believe that when a QB has one good year he should automatically assume he will be the starter from there on out.. it won't make you appear to smart, but it will be easy for you to keep up with.

@Joebuckster @Cool @therantguy Thanks for the response Rex Ryan, I didn't know you hung out around here.  Yeah, just keep the loser in for 10 games, make sure you are out of the running before you open your eyes to the situation you put yourself in.   That is why you have sooo many SB rings.

Joebuckster

@Cool @therantguy Comparing Sanchize to RG3? Hilarious. And Sanchez had no serious competition, neither does RG3. What are you going to do - alienate your QB on the first day of the job? I'm sure 10 games in that if RG is stinking it up they'll look at options. Don't be dumb.
