Auburn running back Tre Mason will forego his senior season and declare for the NFL Draft, the school announced Thursday.

This past season, Mason broke two school records by rushing for 1,816 yards and 23 touchdowns, marks previously held by Bo Jackson and Cam Newton, respectively. He also set the school record for all-purpose yards and finished sixth in the Heisman Trophy balloting.

“After all the thought, talking to family and friends. … I’m going to declare for the 2014 NFL Draft,” Mason said.

In the last three NFL Drafts combined, four running backs were selected in the first round, though none were selected in the first round last year.

Mason ended the season with two great rushing performances, running for 304 yards and scoring four touchdowns on 46 carries in Auburn’s win over Missouri in the SEC Championship game and carrying 34 times for 195 yards and a touchdown in the BCS National Championship game loss to Florida State.
