The New York Knicks have started to explore a potential trade for guard J.R. Smith, ESPN.com’s Ian Begley and Marc Stein report.

According to the report, the team has been frustrated with Smith’s behavior on and off the court.

The NBA fined Smith $50,000 for “recurring instances of unsportsmanlike conduct.” He tried twice this week to untie the shoelaces of opposing players.

“I’m not happy about this, because he was warned, he comes back and he makes the same mistake, and it’s not right,” Knicks coach Mike Woodson said on ESPN Radio. “It’s just got to stop. I keep saying this every time something pops up, but it’s got to stop. Something’s gotta be done. It has to stop. I’ll address it tomorrow when I see him, and then we’ll go from there.”

Smith, the league’s Sixth Man of the Year award winner last season, is averaging 11.3 points this season, down from the 18.1 he averaged in the 2012-13 season.

The main problem is Woody. He constantly complains about JR but constantly leaves him at the end of games. Teach him a lesson and give Hardaway Jr, JR's mins.

Trade him for what? Skittles and some Mountain Dew? If his contract was expiring, I could see that, but nobody wants to deal with this guy.

The Knicks would have to give away draft picks to get some team to take this clown.

Send him to the 76ers they need a SG like him... They would win more games especially with MCW at point. Plus J.R Smith may need a leadership role. For his own team at this point. Too many stars going to one team.

Don't let the goatee and tattoos fool you; he's a child.

I think he wants out. He probably is going to keep doing this to the Knicks as "payback" for them cutting hi brother. Best to trade him and everyone can start fresh.

when this guy (smith) does this sideshow bs, you don't call this s**t "mistakes", when he does it intentionally.  they want to trade that mess?  who needs it?  but per usual, there'll be some team/coach who thinks they can turn this wayward player around.  i don't know if "around" is far enough of a turn to be worth anybodies while.  this guy is already spinning; and circling the drain while doing it, imo!
