Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels has withdrawn his name from consideration for the Browns head coaching position, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

McDaniels confirmed Monday that he had interviewed with Cleveland during New England’s playoff bye week but had little else to say on the subject.

He is currently in his second stint with the Patriots, having worked as the offensive coordinator from 2006-2008. In 2009, McDaniels was hired as the Denver Broncos head coach and finished 8-8 his first year, but he was fired in 2010 after his 3-9 start.

He was the offensive coordinator for the Rams in 2011, then rejoined the Patriots to serve as an offensive assistant for the Patriots’ playoff run. McDaniels replaced Bill O’Brien, who left for the Penn State head coaching position.

According to Schefter, McDaniels withdrew from consideration because it isn’t the “right time for him to become a head coach.”

Smart move by McDaniels, the Browns are an embarrassment of a franchise and he can do much better than that job.

Browns fans should be relieved.  Because the first thing he'd do is get rid of their best players (Gordon, Haden)...

Smart move on his part as well.  The Browns job is probably one of the least desirable in the NFL.  After his blatant fail in Denver, one more bad job could effectively end any career he has as head coach.  Way smarter to wait for the right job.

And for the Browns, I'm not sure it matters who the coach is. That place is a mess.  Are they really gonna win 12 games or something next year with someone besides McDaniels?  Either way they're finishing with somewhere between 3 and 5 wins.

translation--he wasn't going to get the job and so he "withdraws" to save face--a common tactic
