Texas booster Red McCombs called the hiring of Charlie Strong a “kick in the face” in a recent radio interview, according to the Max Olson of ESPN.com.

McCombs told ESPN 1250 in San Antonio that he felt that Strong would “would make a great position coach, maybe a coordinator,” but that he was not a strong enough candidate to coach what he called “one of the three most powerful university programs in the world right now at UT-Austin.”

McCombs has given over $100 million to the University of Texas. Its McCombs School of Business bears his name.

The Clear Channel Communications founder and former Minnesota Vikings owner had previously lobbied for Jon Gruden to be the next coach of the Longhorns.

In an interview on KESN-FM on Tuesday, McCombs said he thinks Gruden would have won five titles in 15 years at Texas (via The Dallas Morning News).

You know what people in Texas say about McCombs?

"Better dead than Red."

People (outside our state) WANT to think ALL Texans are racist and intellectually inferior and the press jumps on those assumptions. The fact they we made a huge step and hired Coach Strong will be mostly overlooked.  It doesn't create as much commentary as one booster behaving badly.

so the face of Texas football is a black face with a shiny bald head? dumb?

No surprise here.

Clear Channel's superstar is Rush Limbaugh.

Birds of a feather.

Well then Mr Booster, you should have ponied up more cash for Nick Saban or Urban Meier.

Because I'm not sure who else you think is a guaranteed winner in a high pressure job like Texas.

Why is it some people think "I'm rich, so I must know everything"? Sounds like nothing more than a good ole' boy hick. I mean, back in his time, they kept black folks out of white business right Red?

I always like those who donate to a university with the "I am giving you tons of money, acquiesce to my whims" vibe going on behind that money.   Donate or don't donate I don't care.  But don't donate and then attach strings to the donation, or use future donations as idle threats if you don't get your way.

You are SUPPOSED to be donating to help out the university, and by extension people getting an education.

You are not donating so you can get your way on things.

If Red had just left it at as a kick in the face and the hire was end around him and the board, he would have been safe. Once he attacked Charlie's creditial suggesting he would a good hire as a position coach, he opened the door for people to interpret his comments had other motivations. To make a ignorant statement that Charlie Strong was not a good candidate and he could close his eyes and find a better one makes anyone start to think.  This man was twice selected as the top assistant coach in the country while at Florida.  A defensive coordinator for two national title teams.  Took a Louisville team to the Sugar Bowl and beat his former team coached by the coach-in-waiting from Texas. If Musgrave met Texas' criteria, surely Charlie already has.

Way to go Red!  Nothing like having to hire a coach from a second or third tier program to inspire confidence in the Longhorn program!

The Vikings had a black coach in the noot-so-distant past, did they not?

@pinx that's a damn lie look at what people went thru during slavery and it's still going now it's just quiet not out in the open like it was from the 1920's until the late 1960's

This guy may not be racist but he came off as if he was especially sense he's white coming from a racist place like Texas but give strong a chance to coach the team and judge off results and not just a name

Really??? your come back is Racist! Get over it dude! Racism is more against Whites and Asians in America for the past 10 years than any other race. Wake up!

@VideoPgh Unfortunately, most large donations are made with the expectation that something will be named after the donor, or his delinquent kid will be admitted and given an easy path to graduation, or he'll get to sniff the QB's jock, or tell the head coach what plays he ought to run.

It's pathetic but it's how it goes.  It's why colleges love winning football and (to a lesser extend) basketball programs, because a high profile coach means rich alums will pay money to be associated with the high profile coach.

@brandycoolestDuring McCombs ownership? If you're referring to Dennis Green, he lasted about a year and a half after McCombs bought the team, and had been there since 92. He had a winning record and playoff wins/appearances, and had his first losing season the in 2001. Mike Tice was the primary coach during McComb's tenure and was not a winner and was fired as soon as the new owner took over in 05.

Let's go ahead and assume that every time a white man is critical of a black man he is racist. I bet when Charles Barkley had comments about Chizik hiring (where race actually was mentioned) you didn't find it racist at all. Double standard.

So it went from slavery, to 1920 until 1960... To now. You've got some pretty big gaps in time there. You should have paid more attention in history if you want to bring it up as discussion. Sorry just can't compare today's "struggle" with somethin that happened 9-10 generations ago.

@pnixEven as a white guy I know that your statement that "racism is more against whites and asians in america for the past 10 years" is absolute lunacy. Look at facts and studies, not whiny white folks like faux news and Lush limpaugh who are upset that they can't be racist and get away with it....Disparate sentencing and school discipline, pay scales, everything points to continued racism against minorities...thankfully things are getting better, but fighting white people racism and systemic racism does not equal whites being the victims of racism, it just means they are being held accountable for their existing and entrenched racism....wake up!!

bbthree03
bbthree03

Because right-wing must = bigot. I'm sure you are a very enlightened "progressive" individual with such a fresh original stereotype. Who's really the bigot here? (Google bigot, learn what it means)

mashley278

@bbthree03Ok, let's try common sense. If you were born in 1927, look and act like a hick, and say something blatantly inaccurate about a black man, you're going to look like a racist. Gruden doesn't have a better coaching resume than Strong, and has repeatedly said that he's not interested in coaching. It was a stupid thing to say. Then again, no one ever said to be rich you have to be smart.

@evetsyarsh @pnix You are an obvious kool-aid drinker. i have listened to Rush for 25 years and have never heard him say one racist word. He disagrees with liberalism period! He could care less if you are red white green black yellow or orange with big purple polka dots. He does not believe the liberal mantra that minorities are too weak and too inept to stand on their own and make their own way! He believes in the power of the individual and  that a paycheck is better than an EBT card. He believes the projects, a creation of liberal politicians has concentrated poverty and crime and left those that are there with no sense of hope or purpose. He wants the best for all Americans and does not see African Americans the way liberal politicians do, a means to an end and that end is them maintaining power and control over their lives. His best friend of 27 years is black and when he was at ESPN he would stop in his G5 and pick up Michael Irving and fly him to work. He is not what you have been indoctrinated that he is. Did you know that Elton John sang at his wedding? He gives way more to charity than do most celebrities? Being anti Liberal, and as for me i hate Republicans and Democrats, does not make you a racist! So,Whether or not Red McCombs is racist (I don't think it was, it was just stupid) or not he is an oil man and a business man he is nowhere nearly qualified enough to say who is and who is not qualified to coach Texas.

@bbthree03 soooo, I guess for McCombs to be racist he would have to do what exactly...burn a cross in Charlie Strong's yard? One of the huge problem's with people like you is that you want the standard for racism to be so ridiculously high that nobody will ever meet it. Therefore people like McCombs continue to skate through the grey areas. Stop being in denial. He doesn't like that a black man is the one who's gonna be backslapping and glad handing at these events as the face of the University. Period.

"If you were born in 1927, look and act like a hick, and say something blatantly inaccurate about a black man, you're going to look like a racist."

Glad that you are so much better than everyone else. Your only reasoning behind saying he is racist is based off a generalization in which you have no proof one way or another. Guess "common sense" really isn't all that common.

I'm from Texas; I like to fish, listen to country, drive a truck AND I'm white. Guess you think I'm racist too.

@davidhudsonone @evetsyarsh @pnix

You've listened to Rush for 25 years??? That right there is all we need to know. Rush Limbaugh may not be racist, but he is PREJUDICED, and highly racially insensitive. His whole schtick is that 'the white man is being persecuted'. Which, while the motivations are different, is no different than the KKK's message.
