Former Houston Texans coach Gary Kubiak interviewed for the Detroit Lions head coaching position Tuesday, reports the Detroit Free Press‘ Dave Birkett.

According to the Houston Chronicle, Kubiak was spotted at the Detroit airport earlier Tuesday.

The Lions have reportedly San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator Kevin Whisenhunt and former Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Munchak on their radar as well to replace Jim Schwartz, who was fired at the end of the season.

Whisenhunt can’t be hired until the Chargers are eliminated from the playoffs.

FARRAR: Mike Munchak turned down Tennessee Titans extension, refused to fire his coaches

Kubiak was fired last month after the Texans finished 2-14, losing their final 14 games of the season. Houston has the first pick in May’s NFL Draft.

The Texans hired Bill O’Brien from Penn State to replace Kubiak.

Anybody is an upgrade over that moron Schwartz.

NFL: Great for recycling failed coaches. I cannot imagine hiring a guy who just presided over that debacle in Houston.

Wow, Kubiak or Munchak would be a horrible hire for the Lions.  I don't think Whisenhunt would be great either, but he's better than the other two

The Lions need a disciplinarian at HC, not their friend.  Someone who's a players' coach BUT won't put up with the immaturity on that team.  They are they're own worst enemy.  The team has the talent to be in the playoffs regularly.

Why not Zimmer from the Bengals? I know Lions want someone to help Stafford get his game together but I think they shouldn't overlook good DC's as well.

This would be an excellent hire for Detroit.  Kubes already has shown high skills for taking a lot of talent and running them into the ground.

Lifetime contract!

Isn't it KEN Whisenhunt, not Kevin?

Hiring Kubiak is about as appetizing a proposition as microwaving 2-week old refried beans for dinner.

@davetheG  Yeah, so long as he brought a good O.C. with him, that would probably turn out well for Detroit

@davetheGHe'd be the perfect fit.  He knows defense, they are stacked on that side, would bring structure and control back to the madhouse.

Couldn't have said it better myself!

The Lions:  the Coaches' Graveyard.  No Lions Head Coach in recent memory has held a Head Coach position in the NFL after leaving the Lions.

@BedaHouse @davetheG stacked on that side of the ball? The Defense? The secondary is one of the worst in the NFL. Overall defense is mediocre, they blew alot of 4th quarter leads. The D line is very good, the LB's are slightly above average mainly because Levy, Tulloch is solid as well.

@MidwestGolfFan@NebojsaTodorovic   even the great Wayne Fontes.  Fontes drafted barry sanders when everyone else in the lions front office disagreed, Ford backed Fontes decision.   Sanders even credited Fontes in his HOF speech, as being the reason he was in the HOF.

Fontes took the lions to the NFC championship, and their only 12 win season. 1991

I met him and his son in Tampa years ago.  Had a few beers and wings, very nice people.
