Vanderbilt football coach James Franklin is the “clear frontrunner” for the head coach opening at Penn State, according to a tweet from CBS Sports’ Bruce Feldman.

Franklin was included in a list of top candidates to replace Bill O’Brien who left the Nittany Lions to become head coach of the Houston Texans. ESPN.com’s Brett McMurphy last week reported Franklin, Miami’s Al Golden and fired Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Munchak were on Penn State’s short list. Golden has since taken his name out of consideration.

EXTRA MUSTARD: Did James Franklin’s coordinators reveal PSU move with Twitter follows?

Penn State officials reportedly were scheduled to interview Franklin on Sunday. The Nittany Lions’ athletic director told ESPN on Tuesday that the school expected to have a new coach “in a matter of days.”

Franklin has coached the Commodores to a 23-15 record in three seasons at the school including back-to-back top 25 finishes.

PSU is like Bama, whoever gets the job will always be under the shadow of Joe Pa. no matter how many games you win or what a coach will do Paterno would done it better  or this way etc etc etc . just like Saban at bama, always under the shadow of the bear. Why do you think O'Brien left for Houston?

GJ PSU Allum and some fans. Here at Nebraska we are nearly running our coach off with the same problem. Thinking everything should be about when we were great.  Hope with the next coach you all learn.  You did lose yourselves a great coach there.

Somebody explain to me why the Penn State job -- with sanctions -- is a better spot than Vandy? Franklin built the brand at Vandy. It's a hot recruiting ticket because of him. Why would he leave???

Franklin would be better off staying at Vandy and waiting for another job. His name is being talked about for a lot of the openings. Unfortunately, The Penn State job is going to be a no win situation for a long time.

Franklin would be a homerun for Penn State. As good a candidate as there is.

Since Golden is staying at Miami, Franklin or Schiano make the most sense.

Good hire for Ped State. Franklin has experience in dealing with rape allegations.

Great hire for Penn State make it happen.  Franklin is so much better than that slob bill O'Brien.

Not impressed

In three years, the teams that Franklin/ & Vandy have beaten averaged a 4-8 record.

Their non-conference opponents over the last 3 years have been Elon, Army, Presbyterian, UMass two times, Wake Forrest 3 times, Northwestern, UAB, UConn, & Austin Peay. Those opponents combined record is 42-100.

10 of the 23 Vandy victories came against teams with 3 wins or less. Almost half of Vandy's wins came against teams who couldn't win even 4 games."

I agree, Rory. It still angers me that U of Maryland could have had Franklin as head coach but instead went with Randy Edsall, who is a terrible disappointment (no surprise). Franklin is a great coach and his players love him. That he has had the success he has at Vanderbilt is astonishing.  Who would have thought Vandy would be winning bowl games? He will, if he gets the opportunity, rebuild Penn State to be a leading program again.

The Vandy D-coordinator has taken his name out of the running for head coach at a SunBelt Conference school, expecting to get consideration for an SEC head coaching job, or joining Franklin at Penn State.

If PSU gets Franklin they will get one hell of a coach. He has accomplished in 3 years at Vanderbilt what no one in more than 50 has been able to do. If they are lucky enough to get him they better damn well do everything they can to keep him or in 3 or 4 years the NFL will come hard and fast at him.

@ianlinross My thought is that Vandy is a stepping stone to a better position. It's unlikely that it will ever be more than that. It's like the military academies (and I'm in Annapolis) when those coaches do well they get snapped up by a more prestigious program. Navy is lucky that Ken Niumatalolo has stayed after his success, which he's kept up after Paul Johnson left.  James Franklin is a very good coach. PSU won't be under sanctions forever and I see them being a national power again with him at the head.

Anyway, that's my opinion.

@mountainbrook417 Dude, he is coaching at Vanderbilt. You can't claim he beats the "have not's", they are the "have not's."
