Redskins: Robert Griffin III won’t be involved in coaching search

When speaking about the Redskins’ coaching search on Saturday, Washington backup quarterback Kirk Cousins said Robert Griffin III would “have a lot of input as to who the hire is,” according ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

But team spokesman Tony Wyllie told Pro Football Talk that general manager Bruce Allen has previously said Griffin won’t be involved in the process, a plan Allen will stick to.

Speculation about Griffin being involved isn’t unfounded. Griffin reportedly has a close relationship with owner Daniel Snyder, and head coach Mike Shanahan thought about resigning because of it.

But that wasn’t necessary, as Shanahan was fired on Dec. 30, shortly after he benched Griffin for the final three games of the year.

I think this is blown way out of portion.  Stafford was used to set with Potential Coaches as well.  Peyton coming out demanded his team,  Then he met with the Coach before going to Denver extensively to make sure he was still going to be in control of the offensive.

So why not have Griffin meet with Potential Coaches and let them tell him what they see he can do to improve and how they can use his talents with an offensive game plan..

Cousins was not being mean in my opinion just saying that they would be involved in the search.   Why would they not  be considering RGIII is the #1 QB until disproving.

Everyone should just relax and lets see what happens with the Front Office rebuilding solutions.

When you let any player in any sport have any input on the the selection of the HC - You are doomed to failure. Griffin has accomplished NOTHING and should have ZERO input on the HC position.

Cousins Knows people are against GriffIn so this little bleep tries to stir things up... what a lowlife.. he knew what he was saying.... When has any QB had any real input in the hirring.. Yes teams hire coaches to fit the players they have, but this is silly hopefully someone shanks Cousins back stabbing "bleep"  in the shower next season... and let that M-Fer bleed out

I am not surprised Cousins feels this way about Griffin....  Kirk had a chance to prove himself in the final three games and the guy crapped himself...Kirks face when Griffin was going in for a 76 yard TD run.... priceless.. hands behind the back... at least try and act excited ...lol

Shanahan should have been fired and who cares what Cousin says. He stinks.

I'm just a casual NFL fan, and make no pretense that I know much about football.  Having said that, I would be surprised if a starting QB did not have input into the hiring of a head coach.  My real post however, is to say that I thought RG 3 was doing great last year until he was left in the last game with an injured knee.  It seems to me that he should have been pulled earlier, and that he has never been the same since.  But up until that point, where he was played when he should have been of the sidelines, I think he was every bit as good as Luck, only as a different type of QB.  As for the ego and the dad, it is up to the head coach to control both.  I can't imagine Belichick having a problem.  Finally, maybe Michael Vick has shown that the RG 3 model just will not stand the test of time, and that Wilson and Luck are the type of QB's to draft.

You know any coach who takes the Redskin job is doing it solely for the money. Who would put up with Snyder otherwise.

Hope the Redskins enjoyed the Colts impressive comeback. Andrew Luck could have been the Redskins quarterback but they sold the farm for a one trick pony.

Its amazing how the Redskins are still playing The Kings New Clothes with Griffin.

The Redskin mantra, there is always next year, and they continue to stink year after year.

Won't make a bit a of difference. The team has no leadership.

RG3 is the 2nd most powerful person in DC, after the President. He is the only one who can bring Dems & Reps together into agreeing that the 'Skins suck!

rrrlas

The Skins are going nowhere and Shanahan was smart to push them to firing him. The owner interferes much as Jones does with Dallas and results will always be the same. The Skins have an added problem with RGIII's ego and his father's interference. Going to be a miserable 10 years or so with these guys. Kirk Cousins should ask for a trade in the next year or so to progress his career. He can be a starter elsewhere. My last observation is that everyone now knows why Andrew Luck went as number 1. The Colts were smart. Big difference between Luck and RGIII.

Since RGIII is a coach killer he might as well pick out the next one

they should keep losing for one more year, Winston can replace RG-Knee

RG3 is the best thing to trade right now.  its a gamble, they got a pocket passer in Cousins.  RG3 with his skinny legs cannot last in the NFL.  If Vick got hammered into oblivion what shot does RG3 have with a kneee that has failed thrice already.

When one player becomes bigger than the Franchise it's only a matter of time and it all unravels.  RGIII should look inward and realize that he has a responsibility to his teammates and coaches and build a normal relationship with the Owner.

The Fords had said repeatedly that Mattew Stafford wouldn't be involved in picking the next Lions HC, however, when the Lions interviewed Caldwell from Baltimore, he and Stafford sat down and watched film together to see where he could help if he were the next coach.  I can see Griffin being involved in Washington's search, regardless of what the owners say.

Hey RGIII has learned to bully people from his Dad! The question is" Is the a place for a professional bully in the NFL" Any good game scout can tell you why RGIII won't last in the NFL, besides the obvious attitude issues.

Yeah, I'd want the 3-13 leader of my team to tell me how to spend my money after 2 whole seasons in the league if I were Dan Snyder.  The term to apply to RGIII as a QB is serviceable until he proves otherwise.  A catchy name & sweating on a national TV commercial doesn't mean you are a franchise QB.

Every franchise QB has a somewhat of a voice in player personal of coaching. Are you people really that dumb

Schefter is full of scheft! Ownership will decide who is coaching and may draft a healthy quarterback as well.

This is a great idea!  Snyder can then blame the hire on Griffin when things go bad, the dudes contract should be up by that time.

Why don't the Redskins simply make Griffin player/coach? This stuff is ridiculous. Washington will never go anywhere or do anything with Griffin at QB.

@amarshall54

 Then how do you explain Colin K. and Cam, Randell and Steve young back in  the day... its has nothing to do with the RG3 type dont get brain washed, blacks were never given a fair shot at playing the position... from high school they would always be moved to another position if they had any athletic ability... its just within the last decade, if an RG3 type wanted to play QB .. he was given the chance to play... either you are a good football player or you are not... Vick and Rg3 smaller players and didnt protect themselves on the field.. RG3's injury was a fluke trying to get extra yards... How do you explain Brady's , Theismen, Aarron Rodgers, Mannings... injuries... shall i go on or do you want me to list more... its football draft the best players and stop putting people in categories the media wants you to believe guys like RG3 is less valuable than a Luck and others.. its all about the situation you are in... and the team around you, and how hard a player works to better himself..

@ellobo199RG3 has won his division and was up 14-0 before going down in his playoff win. Great win by Luck , yes .

@ellobo199 the Redskins didn't have a chance to select Luck, the Colts did. I'm sure the Colts are happy they made the right choice though.

@rrrlas remember when there was actually a debate between who is better between RGIII and Luck? There also used to be a debate between P Manning and Ryan Leaf.  Time will tell which is more ridiculous, but I think Luck may actually be more superior pick than Manning was. I think Luck will win more superbowls.

right.  the world's biggest and strongest legs don't bend sideways at the knee.

@sptsguy12345 they based his greatness on a season that provided an easy schedule.  He is a novelty that fizzled out.  How they are even considering still playing him is astounding.  He will not last a whole season ever with those legs and a bum ...  forget the 3, he is RG-Knee.

leehwgoc
leehwgoc

@ForestBrigham The proven tip-top tier superstars at the QB position have some input, perhaps.   Manning, Brady, Brees, Rodgers.  Those types.

And RG3 isn't even in the same galaxy as those types, bud.

@Marchoir Griffin could be good.

Snyder is just systematically ruining him as a pro.

@friendly--neighborhood--scrawler@amarshall54

Why make this a race thing?  I'm pretty sure race was not brought up by
amarhsall54.

Anyways, there is a difference between some of those players, and that is that they are developing quite well as passers first.  RG3 may develop as well, but it is important that they develop the pass game, because there is only so far you can go as a running QB.  You can tell that was the plan early in the season, but unfortunately, he hasn't developed his passing game enough at this time.

Michael50
Michael50

@canadianox @rrrlas It is far too early to crown Luck as more successful than Manning. Additionally, it is far too early to label RG3 a bust as everyone seems so quick to do. I mean people seem to neglect that the offense was not really that bad this year. It was the defense and horrendous special teams that needed the most improvement. Either most football fans are ignorant or they simply choose to blindly follow media outlets that are looking for ratings.

effeweall
effeweall

@DODGERFAIL2013 @effeweall his knee blew out in college. and twice in the Pro's.  You are telling me his knee bent the wrong way?  His legs are like toothpicks.  they can give him new knees and his shins or thighs will snap.  What is true justice is the only team Shanahan won with was the ahead of the curve Steroid PED team Victor Conte helped that was the Denver Bronco's championship teams.  Look at his career with Washington, an endless supply of Money and control and argueably the worse team out there.

Look at his legs.  They are skinny

canadianox

@6marK6 @WHO*IS*ESPN why is anyone who thinks RGIII is overrated racist? What if a black person says he sucks, which I am sure has been said by at least 1 million black folks, are they racist? RGIII, without world class speed, sucks.

MarkATaylor
MarkATaylor

@leehwgoc @ForestBrigham Yup. Proven guys have that kind of input.  Elway was instrumental in getting Dan Reeves fired (after Reeves wasted a 1st round pick on Tommy Maddox instead of a good left tackle) and then getting Shanahan installed in Denver after Phillips didn't work out.  .

friendly--neighborhood--scrawler

@jhoush9087

you keep drinking the media's bath water if you want... is Andy Dalton developing as a passer? do you hear if Mike Glennon is developing as a passer... and so on... there is nothing wrong with RG3's passing game... like ever Qb there are parts of ones game that can improve....this year he was injured and they are not winning so there is open season on RG3... his rookie year he completede 65% of his passes this year it drppoed to 60% ... Rg3 is a better pocket passer than Johhny football but i promise that you will rarely hear the media knock him on his passing or say he needs to be better... the only reason they knocked Tebow is because he was just god awful... so if you don't think it's a color thing you need to wake up.... do your own reseach and look at the other Qb's throwing the ball... bad passing games never stick to them, but good passing games never stay with guys like RG3... every week the broadcast starts off... "you need to let him beat you from the pocket"... those are buzz words reserved for black QB's in the league whether they can pass or not... what the announcer is really saying he is not smart enough to drop back go through his proggressions and read defense... IT HAS NOTHING TO do with him completing a forward pass.... they will keep knocking a guy like RG3's passing... but other types of QB THAT'S NEVER AN ISSUE...
