Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride announced his retirement Thursday amidst speculation that he was about to lose his job.

Mike Garafolo of Fox Sports earlier tweeted a report about Gilbride’s retirement. Former Giants receivers and quarterbacks coach Mike Sullivan, who was the Buccaneers’ offensive coordinator in 2013 under since-fired Greg Schiano, could be a candidate to replace Gilbride.

The writing appeared to be on the wall for Gilbride after the Giants’ offense struggled in a 7-9 season that included quarterback Eli Manning throwing a career-high 27 interceptions. Giants owner John Mara went so far as to say, “I think our offense is broken,” in evaluating what went wrong in 2013. He also mentioned he thought highly of Sullivan’s work.

While head coach Tom Coughlin received Mara’s vote of confidence, the Giants’ head coach reportedly was scheduled to discuss his staff with Mara and general manager Jerry Reese on Thursday.

Sounds like they gave him the choice to fall on his own sword rather than finish him themselves. Probably out of respect for his part in the SB wins. Time will tell if this is the answer the Giants were looking for.

we could also use a WR that can stretch the defense.....

thank you gilly for the 2... count 'em 2 Super Bowls.  but I think there needs to be someone with some ideas brought in to incorporate the TE position more along with Cruz while maintaining protection.  and on a personnel note they need major OL help which is hard to get in one year or in one draft considering their other glaring needs.

the G-MEN's issues really begin with injuries to multiple players over years and years and years along with the problem of paying a franchise QB like a franchize QB (AND not being able to spend on free agents partly cause the new stadium is something of a boondoggle to this point).

Buddy Ryan punching Gilbride in the jaw right before halftime on TV was great.  Gilbride is a wimp.

Gilbride got punched in the face by Buddy Ryan on national TV. Only thing Gilbride ever did.

@fuggetaboutit909 We have one, but Gilbride made him sit on the bench for most of 48 games. We also need a TE who can do better than gaining 7 yards on 3rd and 8.

The offence is broken more than the players. Gilbride lived off of El not the other way around. But after so many years, now other teams know t better than the Giants, hence all the interceptions.
