The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed defenseman Dion Phaneuf to a seven-year contract extension, the team announced Tuesday.

TSN reported Saturday that the Maple Leafs and their captain were negotiating a deal worth $49 million.

Phaneuf, 28, was playing in the last season of a six-year, $39 million deal which carries a $6.5 million cap hit.

With Phaneuf signed, the Maple Leafs have $50.1 million in 2014-15 cap payroll with 13 players signed, according to CapGeek.

I like the move & that has nothing to do with home town bias so much as watching his game on a frequent basis.

Phaneuf is the lightning rod, shock absorber that this aimless squad could not live without.  Sure his yearlies might be higher but so too will the cap, room to fit more pieces.

Without this guy who takes on all comers, the Leafs would be doomed to have to lean on a Gardiner or Reilly to eat the tough minutes.  Dion can play in any situation capably against any opposition.

There weren't any other options on the market of that sort, won't be for a while, thus the Leafs did right by inking some more years.
