Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews will miss this Sunday’s wild-card game against the San Francisco 49ers, Packers coach Mike McCarthy announced.

Matthews originally injured his thumb in Week 5 against the Lions and had surgery shortly after. He missed the following four Packers game while he recovered from the surgery. Matthews then re-injured his thumb Week 16 against the Steelers, and missed the regular season finale against the Bears last week.

The Packers are 4-1 without Matthews. Despite playing just 11 games this season, Matthews leads the team in sacks with 7.5.

McCarthy did not provide a timeline for when Matthews would be able to play, or if he would be able to make a playoff appearance at all. From ESPNWisconsin.com:

“I really don’t have a feel for Clay as far as where he is. I really haven’t even seen him to talk to him,” McCarthy said. “You’re always cautious with players after surgery. Right now he’s out for this week and that’s really what we’re focused on.”

In Week 1, Matthews started a brawl against the 49ers when he hit Colin Kaepernick when he was clearly out of bounds. After the hit, 49ers offensive lineman Joe Staley intervened to make sure Kaepernick was all right. Matthews slapped Staley and both players were called for a personal foul, although the NFL later admitted only Matthews should have been penalized.

Duh! No way he's back this season. This could be a career ending injury if they bring him back before it's 100% healed, or so the Packers said the first time. Even healed it was apparently still vulnerable. Just hope it won't be a problem next year.

So he's tough enough to take cheap shots out of bounds but not tough enough to play with a hurting thumb??  You're a LINEBACKER for god's sake, not a QB.   Put that thing in a cast and get out there for your team.

Somewhere, Ray Nitschke is embarrassed right now.

He's just scared of retaliation from that cheap shot tackle on Kaepernick.

Doesn't matter, he'd get owned like he does every time GB plays San Fran.
