Houston Texans head coach Wade Phillips said the NFL told the Texans that the touchdown thrown by Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning that tied the NFL record for passing touchdowns in a season shouldn’t have counted.

According to Phillips, the NFL said that Broncos receiver Eric Decker touchdown catch from Manning should not have counted because Decker was juggling the ball.

Decker’s catch was reviewed, as all scoring plays are, but the on-field ruling of a catch was upheld.

“Poor Manning,” Phillips said. “He thought he broke the record.”

The touchdown tied the NFL record of 50 touchdown passes in a season, set by New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady in 2007. Manning later threw No. 51 to tight end Julius Thomas to break the record.

“We did get some good news. Actually, it’s bad news for Peyton Manning. … I guess they’re going to have to take that ball that they sent to the Hall of Fame back,” Phillips said . “I feel bad for Peyton celebrating breaking the record and it really didn’t happen.”

That's unlike Wade Phillips.  By all accounts he's a great guy—though a mediocre HC.

Wade Phillips is such a tool.  And a mediocre coach, at best.

What a petty boob! How many career records would be altered if we went back and instant replayed all of them! It was ruled a catch and as such under the rules of the game it is a catch! Hey Wade He's got 55 TDs now! Even the one you think he lost! If Peyton would have wanted he could have lit up your "awesome" defense for another TD or 2..... Instead of crying like a big wussy try coaching your team to some wins of a least respectable losses you big whine bag!!! Some body get Wade his blanky and his mommy!!!!!!

Poor Wade - he thinks he can coach...

It was ruled a touchdown, on the field and by the review, so it is a touchdown. Houston needs to sever its ties with Phillips before next year because Peyton Manning remembers people talking about his ability to play football.

Wade your team gave up 3 other TD passes to Manning.  If this one had been denied then they would have found another way to the 4th against the DEFENSE you built.

Says the guy who was warned ahead of time about the "Homerun Throwback" and still was not prepared for it. because well, special teams isnt important to this guy....

Wow. Kind of petty. Stay classy, Wade.

And Fox is right - for every one called one way, there's often 2 or 3 called the other way.

I used to actually like Wade Phillips - but this is really chicken-crap. As if in the end it would have made any difference - Wade must be on drugs if he thinks the outcome of that game would have been any different had this one really-close play been reversed.

All Phillips is doing is besmirching a touchdown total that will likely be extended even further tomorrow afternoon, and making himself look like a sour-grapes loser in the process.

Bottom line -  I was a big fan of Wade's dad, and I'm willing to bet Bum would have wisely advised his son to "jes' shut up and let it go."

WHY WAS THIS ARTICLE EVEN WRITTEN??? It is clearly HISTORY NOW!

In my opinion, these kinds  of articles don't deserve to be written. Obviously the author is a Peyton Manning HATER.

Awfully petulant and childish attitude by Phillips here.  And he's normally such a mellow sort of guy.  He must really hate life with the Texans right now.

So? He plays again tomorrow. I'm sure he'll re-break the record...

Not a fan of Manning the player -too whiny like Marino was- but this is just more drama by a rapidly-deteriorating league....

Wade you whine about 1 td pass what about the other 3 remember you lost 37-13............

One should not have counted against the Ravens. Welker dropped a pass on third down that the refs called good and Manning rushed the play before a challenge flag to make the correct call. That next play was a touchdown versus a punt. The things the NFL does for Manning.

Someone should explain what "a good sport" means!

SI fails to add that Phillips was making the comment "tongue in cheek" about taking the touchdown away.  He finished by saying that the touchdown still counted.  Nice job SI.

@Dana2 do you guys actually read the article before bashing someone?

its only 4 paragraphs long so your comprehension levels must be very low, so let me recap for you:

"the NFL told the Texans that the touchdown thrown by Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning that tied the NFL record for passing touchdowns in a season shouldn’t have counted."

"the NFL said that Broncos receiver Eric Decker touchdown catch from Manning should not have counted because Decker was juggling the ball."

since you guys need help in understanding basic english, let me help you out a bit.

the key words in these statements are:  "the nfl told" and "the nfl said".

phillips had zero say or opinion on the nfl rulings.  he simply stated that he felt bad that peyton manning was celebrating a record that THE NFL (did you all catch that?  ITS THE NFL THAT IS MAKING THAT DECISION) may rescind.

reading without comprehension is a leading cause of ignorance.

@Aloha!No, The regular season is over playoff games do not count for the record. Better luck next year for Manning.

@btcvsoloSeems you mixed up Manning and Brady.  Tommy Boy is the world class whiner who cries to a ref any time he gets touched.  Never see Manning do that sh*t.

@btcvsoloWhen does he whine?  Ever?  You should get that Tall Poppy Syndrome looked at, bud.

leehwgoc

@RobertJackeAnd that's why this comes off so poorly for Wade.

It'd have been one thing if he had observed the bobbled catch with matter of fact language, but his whiney little tirade here just paints him as being super butt-hurt.

@Scramble

Decker had two TDs called incomplete this year (one vs. Indy in 3rd qtr, on vs. Tennessee in 2nd qtr), both of which subsequently led to FGs instead of TDs..  What's your point?

Joebuckster
Joebuckster

@Scramble That's procedural - smart on Manning's part. The Raven's can drop a flag on any play they like, but they didn't. So the bad call is irrelevant on the next play. If you want we can say the Raven's Super Bowl doesn't count when Decker was interfered with on a clear PI call that was missed and resulted in a pick-6 and kept the Ravens in the game against the Broncos last year in the playoffs...

I didn't think so...

You're an idiot, btw...

Joebuckster
Joebuckster

@Scramble I don't think we want to review history and start discounting all of the mistakes officials make - I'm sure there are plenty on the road to any record held by any player...

leehwgoc

@Scramble Pretty dumb post.  You're contradicting yourself.

Every QB in the league has the ability to hurry-up the next play to dodge a challenge flag.  However, most QBs can't do it reliably because they don't coordinate their offenses well enough and fast enough.

The NFL didn't do crap for Manning there.  John Harbaugh is the one who gifted Manning the extended drive by not throwing the flag fast enough.

@Tigerpaw great point for all the media love manning gets few players ever so blatantly padded stats in a poor sport fashion than the so called hero peyton .... he consistently piles up meaningless passing stats in blow out games all to the loving adoration of the peter king led media love fest.

He has beaten down over matched opponents for years and the skulked off the field in january looking for excuses why he couldn't win more big games.

The reason he is a bully that is best at picking on 98 lb weaklings and then curling up or choking in the clutch .  all those records won't keep him warm like having 5 or 6 lombardi trophies that he would need to have won to deserve all the accolades he gets.

@Cool LOL Well I'm glad you said something.  I was surprised Wade Phillips would say/act like that but now I know the truth that he was just joking.  Thank you.

DamionMosher

The nfl said and the nfl told, but the didn't take away the td or the yardage, so Wade Philliips didn't need to say a thing. May hasp your reading comprehension is low and you don't realize the leading cause of looking like a tool is opening up you ugly pie hole and proving it so.

Better to say nothing and look a fool the open your mouth and prove it.
