Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones said the team will not use a high draft pick on a quarterback, despite Tony Romo needing two back surgeries in eight months. The Cowboys will continue to use Romo as the franchise quarterback, having just signed him to six-year, $108 million extension with $55 million in guaranteed money last offseason.

Jones said on one of his radio shows that the Cowboys want to add a developmental quarterback but will not use a high draft pick on a prospect:

“You’d like to every spring pick up a quarterback,” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan, via Tim McMahon of ESPNDallas.com. “I think the real issue and maybe your question would be, would you seriously consider using a significant draft pick for a quarterback? That’s early. That’s way too early to do that with the way things are today with my expectation of Tony’s career, which I think will be for several years to come.

“It’s too early to be drafting a highly ranked or, if you will, costly quarterback.”

The Cowboys have used just one draft pick on a quarterback in Romo’s 11-year career, who was undrafted. Dallas selected Stephen McGee from Texas A&M in the fourth round of the 2009 draft.

Too bad they can't draft a new owner!  Jerry Jones is the primary problem with the Dallas Cowboys.

In the dictionary under delusional it says, "Jones, Jerry." In this QB-rich draft, he is nuts if he doesn't take one at least in the third round, or even second as they will start flying off the board then. Romo is 34 and coming off two back surgeries. Jerry, I am a fan and I can even see this. If he gets hurt, you have Orton but who else after that if he gets hurt. Grab one of these QBs if they are available in the third, Jerry. If you pass on a QB in this draft, if you didn't own the team I would fire you on the spot.

Every time I start feeling bad about the problems surrounding my Redskins, I just have to read about the Cowboys and Jerry Jones and I realize that Washington does not have a monopoly on dysfunction. Thank you for lifting my spirits, just a bit, heading into the new year Mr Jones. I look forward to battling you for the NFC East cellar in the years to come.

I see articles like this and then I know EXACTLY why the Cowboys are barely a .500 team. What owner declares his draft intentions 6 months before the DRAFT! What a fool. Romo is 34 and has a bad back. So Dallas will pass on say Derek Carr, because JJ thinks it's a good idea? Jerry, leave the football decisions to football people.

Won't use a high pick on  QB?  The truth is that JJ has absolutely NO IDEA what he will do in the draft.  (In his NEVER ending quest to finish 8-8 in 2014)!

I see them taking a right tackle in the first round. Problem is the guy will be graded as a third rounder.

That would be admitting he made a $108 million mistake - not east for Jerrah to do.

YES.....keep the faith Jerry. I relished when you resigned Romo to that ridiculous contract....basically guaranteeing the Cowboys will be crappy for the forseeable future. Even if they get rid of Romo.....the effects of that contract will continue to be debilitating to the team for a long time to come. WOOHOO!!!

Which is why we the cowboys will be 7-9, 8-8, or 9-7 for at least the next 5 years

@6marK6 Sorf of an interesting comment, but note that JJ's OL pick in 2013 worked out better than anyone could have predicted.
