Los Angeles Lakers coach Mike D’Antoni apologized for comments he made about the team’s fans who are frustrated with the team’s performance this season.

After the Lakers were routed 117-90 by the Phoenix Suns on Monday, D’Antoni said fans who were discouraged by the team’s start should “find another team to root for.”

“I was an idiot last night,” D’Antoni said Tuesday via the Los Angeles Times. “I was out of my mind. I was ticked off. We didn’t play well and said some stuff I shouldn’t have. It was stupid. That’s me, I just made a mistake.”

“We need everybody to be pulling with us and it’s going to take the whole village to get this done. That was the meaning. I just said it wrong and it came out wrong because I was agitated. But I apologize, and we’ll move on. But we need everybody to be behind these guys. They’re going to play as hard as they can play.”

GOLLIVER: NBA Christmas Day preview: Five-game slate offers more than meets the eye

The Lakers have gotten off to a 13-15 record this season, which is 10th in the Western Conference. On Christmas Day, they welcome the two-time defending champion Miami Heat, who have won five in a row.

This was a horrible hire from the start and it has only gotten  worse since.

At first it was Dwight's fault, the it was Pau's, now he's faulting the fans.

Anyone else see the pattern forming here?

He angered a lot of fair weather fans.

How soon can we unload this turkey? I don't buy that apology one bit. 'It came out wrong', he says'. OK, then what did he really mean to say. Usually, what comes out is what you mean, and as he isn't nearly the coach he seemed when the Sun's were rolling along it's time to GIVE THE TEAM TO JEANNIE, and get a few players who will help turn this whole thing around. Jimmy hasn't got nearly what Jerry had, and it shows. Do we have a draft pick in the next 4 years? Once Stern is gone, maybe we can give the Clippers half the team for CP3 or Griffin. If Phil will come back, maybe we could drag that knucklehead Cousins down from Sacramento, let Pau play the other side and develop the younger talent.

When he comes to coaching he is an idiot most nights. Of course Buss hiring him was even more idiotic.

Awkwardly worded apology.  Kind of all over the place -- like his team.
