The Dallas Cowboys have signed Jon Kitna as their third-string quarterback, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com.

The Cowboys tried out several quarterbacks on Tuesday, including Tyler Thigpen, Caleb Hanie and John Skelton, but in the end decided to go with Kitna, who had served as the team’s backup QB from 2009-’11, and started nine games for the team in 2010 when Tony Romo was sidelined with a broken clavicle.

SI WIRE: Jerry Jones: Tony Romo not ruled out, Jason Garrett’s job safe

Romo’s health has been the topic of great speculation since the team’s win over Washington on Sunday. ESPN has reported that Romo will not play on Sunday and is in fact done for the season with a back injury. Coach Jason Garrett has denied those reports and has said Romo’s status for the Week 17 has not yet been decided.

Moving forward with Orton & Kitna…………I guess that's one way to guarantee the season ending on Sunday.

Go Kitna.  Class act as a backup, and can take over faster than others.  Good man too.  He and Tebow, as people, are right up there in my book.  As quarterbacks they both have played their best and kept their heads high.  Haters will knock them down.

Orton needs to pull off some Tebow magic.

"He and Tebow, as people, are right up there in my book."

You're probably alluding to the fact that they are both hyper christian.  Funny thing is, Kitna is not in your face or an a-hole about it.

@heardhimsayThe last time "Tebow" and "magic" were used in conjunction with Kyle Orton, it involved Kyle Orton being so bad that he needed to be sat for Tebow, who then worked his magic and helped get the Broncos into the playoffs.

Maybe they should have signed Tebow solely so they could start Orton, then immediately bench him and hope for the same.

@David King Only the most mature, eloquent, well educated and intelligent people use ALL CAPS the make their point. No playoffs for you this year.

@David King Wow, time to take a deep breath. Calm down. It's a football story, not world peace or anything. Personally, I'm kind of happy for Kitna. I always had kind of a grudging admiration for him, nothing fancy, just a guy who goes out and gives it his all. And then he went back to his old high school and is the head coach and teaches math. And since this is the winter break and the high school season is over they don't even need to get a sub for him.

But man, mellow out. Save the crazy for something that's important.

@David KingApparently Chad Hutchinson, Drew Henson, and Quincy Carter had better things to do.

@David King Take it easy, bro, you're the only punk here. Just face the facts. This will be the third year in a row where the Cowboys blow their chance at the playoffs. Just enjoy the symphony of incompetence that Jerry Jones conducts like a maestro. By the way, as a long time Eagles fan, it looks good on the Cowboys to be so useless.

@ChristopherHarvey @sunalsorises Tebow uses his faith for attention. If Tebow REALLY had faith, he wouldve signed with the Arena League or CFL. But he knew he'd look so bad it wouldnt help him.

That's not faith.

@LeslieHoerwinkleWhen he said "MY FRIGGIN TEAM" in the comment above, I assumed it must be Jerry Jones using a pseudonym.
