North Carolina announced Friday that it will not seek reinstatement for junior guard P.J. Hairston.

In a press release, the school said that its joint review of Hairston’s situation with the NCAA “made it clear that seeking reinstatement for P.J. would not be possible,” according to athletic director Bubba Cunningham.

Hairston, who led the team in scoring last season with 14.6 points per game, has not yet played for the Tar Heels this season after it was discovered that he was driving a rental car acquired for him by a booster with a prior criminal history. North Carolina had also been without senior Leslie McDonald this season for receiving impermissible gifts, but McDonald was reinstated Wednesday and played in the team’s loss to Texas that night.

KEITH: UNC returns a shooting guard, but not the one it needed most

It is believed Hairston will declare himself for the NBA draft instead of attempting to transfer.

It's a bad idea for all you college kids to hang out with drug dealing felons.....

More concerning, doesn't the NCAA look into the background of booster's and if so, how did this one get by them?

transfer??? r u an idiot? he can't transfer. he took impermissible benefits totaling an amount that UNC felt would require to dismiss him and the NCAA will not allow him to simply go somewhere else. UGH!

@Baldeagle This article is just poor journalism. It's been listed time and again on every other credible news source (including every other SI article) that Fats Thomas is not a booster. Just a [thug and] club promoter who uses athletes to get more people to come to his clubs. He's associated with other area athletes at other schools, but UNC and Hairston are the only big names worth writing about.

@noitallman A transfer would imply that he would not play at all this year...which would pretty much be equal to or greater than any suspension the NCAA would set for him...so certainly it is possible...not to mention he might have to sit out another year if he transfers...but he's going pro...

There's not a snowball's chance in hell that he's going to transfer, but if he were to transfer and enroll somewhere else after the semester break, he'd only sit out the first half of next year, not a full year.
