The Southeastern Conference fined four schools a total of $60,000 for violating league policies during the football season, the conference announced Friday.

Mississippi State and Ole Miss were each hit a $25,000 fine for being repeat offenders.  The Bulldogs were fined for using an artificial noisemaker (cowbells) during games and Ole Miss was fined for fans rushing the field after the team’s 27-24 victory over LSU on Oct. 19.

Auburn and Missouri’s fans rushing the field also cost each school $5,000. The violations occurred on Nov. 30 after Auburn’s thrilling 34-28 win over Alabama and Missouri’s 28-24 victory over Texas A&M.  Both victories clinched Auburn’s and Missouri’s appearance in the SEC Championship Game.

“These were some of the most exciting and intriguing games of the college football season and we understand the exuberance of our fans in the celebration of their schools’ victories, but these incidents pose a significant risk of injury and we must always make the health and safety of our student-athletes and fans the top priority,” said SEC commissioner Mike Slive.

What the heck is going on with college football??  Refs are incompetent, no celebrating by the players, now, apparently, WE can't celebrate either.  And, y'all over at Miss St are just gonna' have to STOP making all that noise!!

The NCAA and the SEC are looking more like our tyrannical federal gov't every day!!  STOP ... just STOP!!  You're RUINING football with incomprehensible, overly subjective, and ill thought out rules for the players, the schools and the fans!!  You're protecting us to death!!

The cowbell is a good reason to turn the channel when a MSU game is on. It's not worth watching if I have to listen to that non-stop racket. They are a team that has to fight for TV exposure and then they blow it with the non-stop clanking cowbells.

The rule is that artificial noisemakers are banned from stadiums. While cowbells are included it is particularly meant to keep out air horns and the like. As for rushing the field i see both sides. if the SEC doesn't try to prohibit it  then they leave themselves liable to lawsuits for anyone injured while the climb a concrete barricade and in some places a 4 to 5 foot drop onto a field.

Rushing the field after a big win is a college tradition at EVERY university.  Why would you want to discourage that???

Another great attempt to sanitize the game.

$5,000 = no fruit cup in the dining hall for two weeks.

Only lousy football teams resort to making noise to distract the other team, if you can't beat them physically then just forfeit........ childish pranks.

$5000? At least we know now that Auburn will never let such a thing like this happen again.

I think they used a formula of Cost of post-game toilet paper to roll Toomer's Corner/2 = Penalty Fine.

Lifelong Big ten (11? 12? WTFEVER) fan so I love it when the SEC loses. Which is not often enough. Or when they are sanctioned or scolded. But seriously... COW BELLS????.... .... .... if my team loses because of cow bells... ... dude i am already dead. finish it quickly. This is the most pathetic fine ever-ish.

Fined for using Cowbells??  My junior high school football fans would have driven the SEC crazy then, and probably not paid any attention when they yelled, "Cease and Desist!"  This business of making a rule against anything you find irritating is really getting out of hand.  Cowbells have been around for decades.  Get a life, Mike Slive.

$5,000? What a joke - Auburn pays its second string running back more than that.

Also, the leagued fined Florida $5,000 for its fans rushing the exits.

Boooo hooooooo Tradition is tradition. Stop messing with Miss States tradition. Its part of the game.

So, if one stadium is louder than another does that mean they will have to limit the fans to only 95dB because that is the loudest the visitors fans can get?

Make more sense by putting integrity back into the Heisman that messing with tradition!

@DavidWest The cowbell at Miss State is a tradition that goes way back. Once you start taking those away from the game then it takes the fun out of it.  Making noise from the crowd is part of the game.

@DavidWest uh huh you must be an Ole' Miss fan who hates the cowbell!

@BobRayTalbotThank you ...

To all the gov't agencies, congress, state govt's, state agencies, and any and every regulatory body governing any human event or activity:  STOP ruining the world by trying to remove all the risk!  Newsflash:  No one gets out alive!

And, for goodness sake, STOP trying to preempt every possible offense for any and every whiner who cries they're offended.  Stop expecting the world to placate every sensitivity, accommodate every whim, and be accountable for other people's life decisions.

Life's hard - suck it up, put on your big boy or big girl pants, and just LIVE!
