Michigan and Florida will open the 2017 season in the Cowboys Classic at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, the schools announced Thursday.

Michigan will be the away team with Florida designated as the home team.

The game will be played Sept. 2, 2017. The teams have met twice in bowl games with Michigan defeating Florida 41-35 in the 2008 Capital One Bowl and 38-30 in the 2003 Outback Bowl.

“You don’t get these opportunities very often,” Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley said in a statement. “Our schedule has been pretty consistent through the years. We were presented this opportunity and just thought it was something that our fans would embrace, our program would embrace. It would give us great national visibility. Obviously, a very difficult ballgame against a storied program — that excites us.”

Michigan played in the Cowboys Classic in 2012 and lost to Alabama 41-14.

“We are excited to make a return trip to Dallas for the Cowboys Classic against Florida,” Michigan coach Brady Hoke said in a statement. “This is a great way to reach our fan base in the south and to continue to expand our recruiting efforts in the state of Texas. Our goal is to have as many Michigan fans at the game as possible.”

Jeremy Foley must have a lot of work to do insuring that all the players have passports and visas for the trip to a foreign country (The Not in Florida OOC Land ). Guess they all expired since the last trip abroad was in 1991 above the Mason -Dixon line to play Syracuse. A loss 38-21.

I can't believe year after year great college football programs just keep pouring money into jerry's pockets.  Like he does not have enough from everything else he overcharges for.

EAT IT jerry!!!!

Yet another reason why college football is a joke. How in the world do you play a regular season college football game not at, you know, a college...

Did Brandon learn his lesson?  Will he allow the band to come without forming controversy this time?

Be nice if Hoke's stated goal as published was to win the game and the NCAA Championship rather than simply "having as many Michigan fans at the game as possible." He is much more suited to be an ambassador for UM than he is a head football coach. Au vey...

The very definition of amateurism and school spirit:  two schools flying large teams with staff to a third state, the "home" team traveling around 1,000 miles, for a nationally-televised game.

Not to be a pooh bah here, but why is it news talking about the opening game in 2017?

I'm sure Ohio State was offered the game first and Urb turned it down.

So that should be the third season for Michigan's new coach, and just in time to get the fans starting to call for his head.

Great. When Michigan and Florida are good and play each other, it is good for college football. Hopefully Hoke and Will M' have their teams much improved OR they're both fired!

So, this is for the 2017 year?

I hope this does not mean that with UF scheduling a game like this in 2017 that Muschump has a new 3 year plan to get better.

Its great to see non-con games like this matching up bigger conference games instead of powder puffs. I just hope UF has a team that plays well.

Top teams finally scheduling meaningful and competitive out-of-conference games---I'm sure their boosters will be incensed.

Michigan has played against Florida twice. They won twice. Florida fans should be more worried about their season going down the toilet right out of the gate.

2017/18/19 Michigan opens the season vs SEC opponents.Sure hope the Michigan is doing better than this year, so it's not another embarrassing loss, like the Bama game.

@BlinkerBuild it and they will come.  Guess he proved that one correct.   FYI, no one has to pay him one cent for anything that he offers for sale.

@TheDistrict I didn't know there was specific and defined criteria for regular season games.  Please enlighten us.

@bornindetroitDo you really need him to tell you that his goal is to win games and championships?  Oy vey.

@MidwestGolfFan This is why I watch the NFL. Despite all its flaws at least they are honest about being a profession.

@RickapolisIt seems like it is news because it is.   Should they have kept it a secret?

@theboneman21Great point, because the games played in 2002 and 2007 are going to have a huge impact on the 2017 matchup.

@theboneman21 Michigan has played against Appalachian State once.  They lost once.  Michigan fans should be more worried about their 2014 season going down the toilet right out of the gate.

Right, boneman?  Using your logic?

Sadly, I don't doubt you on that Jack... I think both are in over their head's...

@JoeCabot @theboneman21 I'm sure it will have a huge impact on the 2017 game, Joe.  I can imagine Florida running out for the kickoff in Dallas and thinking, "OH MY GOD, WE LOST THE 2003 OUTBACK BOWL, WHATEVER WILL WE DO???????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Ray1950

@MattEm @theboneman21 Matt, Appalachian State isn't playing Michigan.  Florida is, so using Appalachian State in this equation showed no logic at all.

Nor in Florida either. Cept we use aged swamp water because it gives that extra kick on the after taste like a blended scotch.

I like buying the old JD barrels and cutting a piece of the wood off and adding it to the mason jar for coloring and a little more mellow taste.

@theboneman21 @MattEm @JoeCabot I live in Royal Oak, Michigan, and grew up in St. Clair Shores, Michigan.  We don't exactly make hillbilly moonshine there, Einstein.

@brianformo @Ray1950 @MattEm @theboneman21 That can't be right, Brian.  Ray said Michigan wasn't playing Appalachian State, and he sounded so sure.  So saying Michigan plays Appalachian State in 2014 showed no logic at all.  After all, Ray said so.
