The Braves finalized details in a trade with the Twins that will bring catcher/outfielder Ryan Doumit to Atlanta, as first reported by Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports.

Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal reports the Twins will receive left-handed pitcher Sean Gilmartin in the deal.

The Twins later confirmed the trade via Twitter.

Doumit, 32, hit .247/.314/.396 while missing games with concussion symptoms in 2013. He hit .275/.320/.461 with a career-high 18 homers for the Twins in 2012.

He could compete for innings with Christian Bethancourt, Evan Gattis and Gerald Laird after Brian McCann signed with the Yankees.

Gilmartin has played three seasons in the Braves farm system, finishing up 2013 at Triple-A Gwinnett.

Twins trade part-time below average catcher / DH ,who when batting fifth in the line-up over half of his games last year at a .219 avg- /.199 avg with runners in scoring position and collecting over $3M - for a 23 yr old left- handed starting pitcher who was a  2011 first round pick (28th overall). Looks to me like the Twins made out like a bandit on this trade.

I'm sure this is a respectable trade for the Braves, but it doesn't exactly address the teams greatest weaknesses, does it? This trade just provides us with more depth in an area where it doesn't seem that we need it. Oh well, maybe it will work out. After all, it's the big, splashy moves that always bite the Braves in the butt. The small trades and FA signings seem to usually end up looking brilliant, so I'll hold onto hope that this winds up being a great move for us.

Is there any hope that Doumit can play 2nd base?  :^)

The Braves are stacked at Catcher next year. Some guy who was cleaning toilets a few years back and now this nub who I have never heard of. Tomahawk chop ya'll.

Actually, I think the Braves will get as much production from catcher this year as McCann would have yielded. We now have three guys who can share the catcher innings, and apparently Doumit can play another position as well.

a downgrade from McCann.  Good.

@MrArlington Gattis is going to have a great year. 25 hr's, 80 rbis, .240ish. Not sure who your team is but Atlanta will win the East, at least.

Again, you know nothing about baseball. This is actually a great pick up by the Braves. You can't look at stats alone for this guy. He is a good player and a nice little pick up by the Braves. If you look at where this guy played all his home games (Target Field); he actually was not too bad considering if it not a hitter friendly park.

I think I am jumping ship to mlb.com. Too many fanboys on SI
